Great Blue Heron vs Electric Fencing
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
This bird eat most of my koi fish, until I installed an electric fence around it. I hope he flew south for the winter months to migrate, he sure has enough fuel in his stomach for a round trip then some….

Those electric fences are designed to keep mammals contained. The bird's thick feathers even if wet, and horny feet would have minimised the effect. To the heron, the shock would be like us accepting a few scratches when collecting blackberries or gooseberries.
Thanks for posting. Have been wanting an electric fence for the pond and can’t believe he just stepped right on over! I have netting which is ugly but I will just give up and keep the netting.

Ah the Grey Heron, possibly One of the smartest birds I have seen. He will always find a way to catch fish!
Moral of the story get a guard dog
What happens after you made the change? Is there an update? I decided to do this when I've finished my ponds, I'm wondering if connecting the wire to a battery would do the job, I will also put carpet strip around the inside edge on the top of the wall in case anything walks on it & gets too close.
Too painful for me. Reminds me of all the squirrel wars I fought in and lost. But, carry on soldier.
Great vid. 👍🏻
A 410 shotgun wood of ended it in no time the following morning I saw this bird!
He actually said a little prayer by the rosary beads... untouchable !
Next day the bird came with VOLTMETER 😂
Sir, you have underestimated the use of a scare crow.

Thank you Mario, I was a nice project. Despite all the negativity throughout the comments it seem to work fine. Even with the mild winter we've had this year, there were no signs of the heron and or wild life for that matter. Have a great day, be safe!! Patrick
My buddy did the same. The next afternoon there were some feathers but no heron to be seen, EVER.
It may have been a better idea to have some spars across the pond that were hot so the heron could perch upon them and then when he tips a foot or bill into the water (or vice versa) the shock is near guaranteed.
Maybe a fine copper wire connected to the mains would be better !!Amps needed.
Man, that was a video that could have been 5 minutes long... I'd suggest a Pellet or BB Gun - wont kill it, but it won't come back, either.

At *5,000 VDC* (time: 10:44) .... it should have died, or been so fried that you might as well finish it off. Any and All equipment I know of with that type of voltage potential carries *killer* current. At my job, you have to get High voltage qualified by OSHA & NFPA 70E Standards for anything 600v or higher. (Note: A car battery is only *12 VDC* and we know by touching positive to negative the seriousness of that outcome) 🙄 (I would seriously say that someone made a voltage miscalculation......) 😏
My pond was just up to their belly deep. I contrived a number of sharp spikes (pieces of driftwood with sharpened points) that sat at about the water surface. I noticed clumps of feathers on these sharp points for a few days and they didn't come back. Kingfishers were actually worse than herons because they dove in and chased the fish to their "safe" refuge. The only time my fish were truly safe was throughout the winter as long as it was cold enough to maintain a few inches of ice. A heated ring kept a small area clear to dissipate gasses. I scared my neighbours with the pots and spoons more than I ever scared them!!😆😂
I'd like more info on those clear columns please? What are those and where can I get them, that is awesome

haha I had a heron steal my fish to. The bugger rocked up every morning about the same time as your friend and then later in after noon, He,d wait for the cars to leave thinking I wasn't home smart as but I catch him out. I put bird wire across my ponds, that fixed him. We named him Keven and i reckon it was a male. because as soon as i walked out the back door he,d jump up on the shed and then pop over to the 4 wheel drive and get pissed off and beat his reflection in the frount window the pelican hehehe!
Herons are apex predators, they eat ducklings, rabbits, rats, moles, squirrels , snakes and eels. Oh, and fish , big fish.

Well filmed , can I ask what you do with your fish when you close down your pond for the winter ? here in Australia mt fish stay outside 24/7 but we dont get winters like you do. I had a friend give me all his massive goldfish to add to my goldfish pond yrs ago only to have a similar bird take the bloody lot before I netter the top , too little , too late though..
Now you know where the saying "birdbrain" comes from.
He didn't seem to care much. I've seen more effective systems (like a motion activated irrigation system).
A 2.2 air gun is cheaper than all that fancy fence stuff.
Make a cover with black plastic pipe fitting and netting and cable ties, split into sections for ease.
How deep is the pond where he’s walking?
My uncle john used an airgun, they've never come back.👍

Isn’t the fence suppose to keep the heron out of the pond? It was still able to get in.

Will an air soft do the same trick?
20x20 sunscreen works too here I buy my koi the tanks are under the screens nices shade too
Very nice video, suspenseful pacing. However, my take-away is that electric fencing doesn't work for herons. I found that a monfiliment line network above and across the pond works to keep them from flying in. But if they can land and just walk over the line they will.

Andy, you have my blessing to use any part of this this video as you wish. I'm gathering by most of the comments that this electric fence didn't work. My intentions were to use this method from fall until spring, I've only had to use it the one season because this bird did not return.
Any decorative pond construction company or a little research before building this pond you would have learned, minimum 3ft depth of water and about a 1 foot drop from the edge to the water. Only way to protect your fish from most predators. Cliffs and hiding holes do nothing. We as psople might get bored staring at an empty pond, but that heron knows its life and death and will stand there waiting for those fish to feel safe and come out, snatching them as they do. Only way to prevent it is to make it inaccessible to them.
If it were me, I would’ve gotten my BB shotgun

I did consider this as an option Julia, but I couldn't hide outside from this smart bird. If he/she sensed I was out there, they wouldn't make an appearance. Thank you, Patrick
I have lost a few koi to a heron, my ponds much smaller than yours but loads deeper-1 meter-that heron would be over his head if he tried walking in mine. I have a fishing line fence right round mine now about 800mm high and with a 100mm spacing, the ‘fence’ is right by the edge so he/she has no where to stand inside-it seems to be working.
Use 10 to 15 pulses per second, telephone theory.you don't need 5000 volts dc, 200 is enough if you have small burrs on the wire to get through the hide.
Should have used 220Volts with wires an inch over water and covered with fish hooks!
though about it. All the leg muscles are high up. The lower leg bone is like our foot bones -- no muscles. So, the electricity goes through the leg to the ground. Does not go through the muscles, or any of the nerves controlling the muscles. So, little reaction. Very interesting.

Perhaps the answer is to add slow moving cheap fish to the pond and let the heron feast on them and not prize Koi. just a thought. Otherwise a 22 pellet gun.
Forget the fence charger and hook it straight to your welder. Protect your fish and cook your dinner all in a flash !!
Fish, hook, line tied to a stake. End of heron. You won't get caught because it will leave in your wheelie bin.
The water is a perfect ground... you way over thought this... and feather is a perfect insulator...
