I had escargot for the first time in New York City ages ago as a teenager. I thought I was so sophisticated, but it was really the garlic butter and bread that were so delicious. The snails were almost an afterthought. I made my own version of them many years later, and substituted canned button mushrooms for the snails. I served them at a dinner party and called them "fauxscargot." Similar texture to snails, and the garlic butter was just as good.

Pieces of sea scallops are another nice thing to substitute for snails.

🐌 Did you hear about the snail who bought a fast vehicle with an 'S' painted on the side? As it drove by people exclaimed: "Look at that S-car go!"

The anti chef is more of a sensationalist...to sell your his trinkets and to entertain you...he's not there for any other reason.....make them yourself instead and serve then to your guests.

Crouching over that counter, at her height, must have just been excruciating after a time. She is working at the farthest side away from her for the reach of the camera I expect. Such a trooper!

The only time I ever had escargot was in Paris. They were wonderful! I've never seen them on a menu in my boring Midwestern city. I've also never seen them in the grocery store (though I have never looked).

Julia would tell you to speak to the manager of the store and have them order them for you. Go to the highest end grocery store....and they should be able to get you canned snails.

@@baritonebynight If you are going to eat canned snails instead of fresh, then there is no need to go to the grocery store and sweet talk the manager. Just order it off the internet.

Once again..not peeling garlic before putting into garlic press yields very little product. I get so irritated when her recipe calls for 1 large clove of garlic and only 10% of it comes out of the press because she didn’t peel it first.
