I actually found one of the old style tent stakes at a campsite once. It's almost the same size and shape as the trowel. That's what I use as a trowel now. Hard to believe someone hiked in a tent that would require that but double bonus - picked up trash and upcycled!

I was gifted an InReach on my 69th birthday, family had enough of my out of touch solo forest meanderings. They didn't worry about me, but wanted an emergency connection. It's just smart since I'm out at least a couple of times a month year-round in the PNW. The family pack is my feedbag when I don't have hip belt pockets. That pillow on top of my boots/shoes lengths the sleeping pad enough at the head that my feet don't hang over the bottom and the stuff sack works for a bear bag line weight, good stuff!

I agree with all of those pieces...I actually have 2 fanny packs by Thrupack. I wear one and the other is clipped to the outside of my pack like an extra pocket. I rotate the 2 of them for wearing because one has food items and stuff like my toothbrush, the other has gear like sunscreen, lip balm, headlamp, wallet, etc. The food back I set up every night with my food for the next day, including snacks, so that I don't have to dig into my pack for that days food. The gear one doubles as my ridgeline organizer at night and besides the usual gear (also including a small thing of pepper gel that I have fortunately never had to use) it holds my pocket trash while I sleep. I love my setup and have no plans to change...base weight is still only 12 -18 pounds depending on time of year.

I'm either going to get a Bogler Trowel or the Vargo Digdig. They have serrated edges. I almost always hit roots and the deuce isn't very effective.

Nice… for me it was a sun umbrella. Did a trip a tr ago May in a 200,000 acre wilderness inside of a 500,000 acre burn.. SW OR. read, no trees as far as you could see. It was a lifesaver. The hands free kit is a must too.

About the pillow not being strictly "necessary," if the energy you recover by sleeping better outweighs the effort of carrying the extra weight, then it's obviously a plus. And if someone tells you you're "soft" because you like a nice pillow, tell him he's soft for wining about carrying a whole extra four ounces.

My inReach isn't a luxury. I used my full sized floating one to navigate from NC to Bermuda and back on a solo sail trip. As for the rock bag, I've been using a carabiner on a hank of Zing-It for years, just like I do for climbing.

I’m a stomach sleeper so my perfect pillow is my down puffer wrapped in a buff. The fact that it compresses is what makes it nice for tummy sleepers (my pillow at home is also flat af)

I have a Zoleo. $200 and $25 to $50 monthly. Only $4 a month when not in use to keep it active. One of my favorite and essential pieces of gear. You can text whole custom messages to anyone in your contacts.

You need a real shovel to dig a poo hole here in VA, idc what anyone says a little hand trowel ain't cutting it. Animals poop in the woods, I will too. I walk far from the trail and use very little tp. If I go somewhere that you can dig, I will but central va is literally too rocky to dig
