Greasing the Crane Jib | Seaman VLOG 022

Chief MAKOi Seaman VLOG 022
Greasing the Crane Jib / Working at high places
In this episode, I had one of the deck guys strap on the GoPro while I film from below. Their job order for today is to climb atop the cranes and grease the jibs.

Chief! On carriers we have a 'portable crane' called a 'Tilley' to hoist aircraft which have somehow wandered off their wheels. But if you know the right people (the guys who go up the carrier's mast to service the radars) they will take you up to the top when in port just to see if you are brave enough to do the climb. The upper radars are about 200 feet above the waterline (the flight deck on my carrier was 60 feet above the waterline). The views are fantastic! You take a pair of your 'skivvies' (underpants for landlubbers who don't know the word) up with you just to hang up there long enough to take a photo. If you do the climb they award you a Certificate as a 'Skivvie Waver'. It is a very exclusive group. When I took my skivvies out of my pocket to hang up, there was a huge laugh from my shipmate-buddies who took me up (it was in San Diego). Before I went up I took a yellow-pen highlighter and colored in a 'Stain' in just the right location. Huge FUN onboard ship sometimes, it matches up with huge WORK. By the way, it was much more terrifying climbing down the mast than going up!!!

Good informative video of one of the hardest and dangerous jobs on board is hanging from a boatswain or bosun's chair to grease and paint on the heights ... and not all sailors dare !! ... even if you pay extra money , thank you because it reminds me of the many times I did that hard work 👍

The stuff that some deck crews have to endure during a tour haha. Bless them all. I remember very vividly (wasn't a crane, by all means). Our boatwain had myself and another fellow greeze a total of 16 davits that ran around the cruise vessel. Had to roll them out with weights and hand crank them all up in one day. My arm feels sore and spinning just thinking about it. Great videos cheif.

I drove a prototype tower crane that folded up and became a trailer, so the makers delivered it to site unfolded it and showed me the how to operate it. I checked the manual and like all cranes greasing was a daily or weekly affair. But the grease nipple I didn't like was 60ft up and 30ft out at the end of the jib, I refused to go out there and suggested fixing a tube to the bottom of the mast. This and several other grease points were tubed and a central grease point fixed, they named it after me.!!!! In those days an operator was paid an extra hours money per day, called greasing money to make sure all fluids etc. were topped up and the machine was fit to work.

My on Board crane is quite hard to grease, we literally had to sit on the cable n grease it along the way. Any safest suggestion other than doing that? we tried this method but the cable still turn out to be little bit yellowish . Im just Deck rating but most the greasing part, we'll do it. ur help is much appreciated

Thank you for this dangerous and important work you do! You and the other workers should get paid the full value of your labour, and you should all control the ships, not the bosses who do no work and take so much money. That way, you could make the work environment safer for yourselves, because the cost of safety provisions would be paid by the very people the safety provisions are protecting!

  • @ChiefMAKOi

Eligibility doesn't necessarily mean competence. Your license is just the minimum requirement. There are plenty of seafarers who have higher licenses but if you ask them a simple question regarding to normal jobs of one rank higher, they don't know how to answer. Learn everything you need first. When you are already confident you can perform the job of the next higher rank, then take the exam for higher license.

"eligibility doesn't necessarily mean competence". MAN, truer words were never spoken. Go for the guy who has 'mastery' and can answer your questions without delay or having to 'look things up', I had a guy on the carrier who knew every word in OPNAV Instruction 5510.1. He was worth his weight in gold! Also, he knew all the shortcuts too - legal and illegal. He always had the good sense to avoid the latter. But we had to be careful not to overload him. He was NOT the most senior - he was an E-5...!
