There is a growing awareness of the essential topic of soil health. The practice of cover cropping, growing short-rotation crops between the commodity crops, is becoming more widely adopted. Grazing these cover crops can generate additional income while enhancing the soil health benefits provided by modern forage varieties employed as cover crops. I will discuss the important characteristics of the three primary groups of forages that can be utilized as cover crops - grasses legumes, and forbs such as turnips and other brassicas.

Healthy soils produce more robust crops. Cover crops provide a number of positives for soil health, the more days that we have living plants growing in the soil the greater the opportunity to enhance soil health.
Optimizing the use of these cover crops for livestock feed while providing maximum soil benefit. I will discuss how managed grazing can make optimum use of the cover crops for your livestock while leaving most of the nutrients in the field in a form more readily available to soil microbes.
