The Gray Death Legion, one of the most renowned of mercenary units in the setting. Formed from humble beginnings as the combination of the shattered remains of Grayson's father's merc command and a local militia in 3024 and meeting their end in 3065, their most famous feat was the recovery of the Helm Memory Core, which contained detailed information on so much precious lost Star League science and technology, and Grayson Carlyle made it a point to give it to the Inner Sphere for free rather than keep it to himself or seek to sell it to the highest bidder. And they did so at a very high price, losing much of their regiment at the hands of Free Worlds League forces that had been duped into fighting them by an ambitious ComStar precentor. And then later, during the Clan Invasion, they proved to be one of the very few merc units that could fight with some success against the Clan onslaught despite the costs. They were also the pioneers of the serious face development and usage of Inner Sphere battle armor, debuting their Gray Death Standard and Scout battle armors against the Jade Falcons during the last year of the Clan Invasion. This song is a fine tribute indeed. And Talibah brought good vocals as usual. Keep the BT songs a comin', StringStorm.

However, their service with Gareth turned out to be a ruse to draw out and destroy him and his traitorous Free Star Republic. Subsequently, the GDL were restored to Glengarry and House Steiner service by Katherine Steiner-Davion, Lori Kalmar-Carlyle receiving one of the highest awards in the McKennsy Hammer. The unit was destroyed in 3065 by Free Skye Rebels on Hesperus II, though the mission to defend the factory was a success. Alex Carlyle survived the Jihad, being named Count of Odessa for his troubles. Right now, his granddaughter Isobel is being setup to lead a new GDL in the ilClan era. A group called the Gray Death Legion, led by Grayson "Death" Carlyle. An incredible ammount of gloom and doom for people that turned out to be the defenders of hope and surival of all the inner shpere.

Funny thing is that "Death" came from a mispronunciation of Grayson Carlyle's actual middle name, which was supposed to be pronounced closer to "Deeth" but enough people read it wrong over his lifetime that it just stuck. And that is in lore, by the way.

(I.e if you have the last name "Smith," it means you were related to someone who was a smith. For sake of argument, their name is James. Everyone knew them as James the Smith, which eventually became James Smith.)

The Grey Death Legion are basically battletech’s version of Tekkadan from the Gundam (multiverse?). They start out in humble beginnings, do something completely awesome, then disbands soon after. In this case, it’s declaring war on a phone company Comcast, and almost single handedly reversing the setting’s technological decay.

My introduction to Battletech came on Christmas of 1998 when one of my aunts gave me a copy of Mechwarrior 3. Neither of us had any idea what "Mechwarrior" was much less "Battletech", but the box had a giant robot shooting lasers and my aunt knew her little 12 year old nephew well enough to know that was right up his alley.

I'm very happy to see that Tukayyid wasn't just a one off. More Battletech deserves to be immortalized with your wonderful music.

Hopefully there will be version with adjusted volume levels. I agree that song itself is amazing, but since music overpowers vocals it lessens overall experience quite a lot.

Talibah's voice is amazing, but, being quite mellow, it's a shame that at parts it gets lost in the music.

Last time of I heard of them was in Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries, you can choose which mercenary faction you are and the grey death legion is one of them that of I remember correctly.

You are actually just getting a sponsorship from a choice of four major mercenary companies rather than joining them outright in that game, and the Gray Death Legion is participating in this sponsorship program as part of a rebuilding effort because the game takes place after the complete thrashing they got on Hesperus II.

Well, the GDL wasn't long for this world. MW4: Mercs isn't completely canon as far as I know but it broadly gets the timeline of the FedCom Civil War correctly. The GDL was all but wiped out during the FedCom civil war. You even get a reference in the game about that. That some kind of separatists took out a GDL train out while their mechs were powered down. That's when Spectre says my favorite line in the game when you attack said separatists : "I'd do this job for half salvage and a thank you note".

@@JPG.01 Regarding the GDL in mech 4 that is a part that isnt canonical, as they were completely wiped out before that, and alex was still in the guards so couldnt rebuild, and brewers legion formed instead, before being wiped out in the jihad

Saw this before I actually started Decision at Thunder Rift. Those first 3 books in the Gray Death Saga have been an awesome intro to battletech, and this was a good lead to that intro. Great work as always Stringstorm.

The Grey Death. Good to hear it immortalized ... over ten years after "a time of dying" and I'm still pissed about how the authors handled this famous Teams dissolution.

I want a song glorifying the Rim Worlds Republic, those guys need some love. The Star League were lying theiving pricks, and whilst Amaris was not a good man, I'd argue he was a good thing. Also, that's how they'll get out of the ilClan era. A reborn, non-evil, Rim Worlds Republic finally crushes the stupid Wolvies, perhaps under a Ryan or Worthington-Rowe rather than an Amaris... and then disintegration, because this os BattleTech and noone can really everg win.

You know I had an image in my head that if this song was created in universe which had Grayson's face when he heard that a song was created about his unit. Though I wouldn't know if he would be amused or horrified. It has been ages since I read the first two GDL Books and I haven't even managed to read the rest of them either.

Man, what's up with StringStorm songs? It's not a joke they get better the more you listen to them, it's actually quite impressive, the more i hear this song the more and more i love it

Talibah's voice has no place in Battletech, outside of a Noble House, at a first glance at Battletech as a series...... spend some time with the series, and the worst of the conflicts somehow become beautiful ballets, where her voice fits perfectly with the rough and brutal guitars. An unexpected but perfect mix! Same as most, I wouldn't have minded the music tuned a bit lower, but it's also fitting in a way, where no matter who's trying to actually improve the quality of life in the Innersphere, or how long there's been peace, it's temporary at best, the fires will always be relit to burn it to the ground.

Fun fact: The anime is canon as an in-universe propaganda series. Because its gets so much blatantly wrong. Its also why we have the meme of "YOU DARE REFUSE MY BATCHALL!?"
