Gravitas Plus: What explains the Church's interest in education?

In Canada, the Catholic church contributed to the death of 6000 children. In Africa, it opened schools to make the native more governable. In Australia, the church promoted racial hierarchy through education. WION's Palki Sharma brings you the dark story behind Church's interest in education.

@@kinesonc i m from Goa and modern day goans are secular and civilized community. In Goa we have our own indigenous hindus. We natives don't care about this history as it's complicated. When Portuguese came they converted and changed names of natives living in gomantak (ancient name of goa) while doing trade with side hindu kingdoms, so our own people betrayed us. After conversion of majority and invasion of British in rest of india. Portuguese gave native hindus special rights from other converts. They used religion to conquer and not for religious agenda as west always played their divide and rule game. The roman catholics must not be blamed for shitty stuff done on name of religiom by power hungry empires.

@@dcfancomics1314 every community worldwide has condemned the catholic church for past atrocities, including catholics themselves! Look at latin america. And the catholic church including the pope was forced to apologize. They even have remembrance day! But the catholics in goa support and defend past atrocities 😶 some even whitewash history. If you are truly secular, theres no need to whitewash anything. And especially dont antagonize your own countrymen for speaking against past colonial atrocities!

@Cocci Nelle Check very carefully one thing too...that no investigation has been done on why the children were 'actually' killed and why only children and why not elders? Is it possible that the 'killers' would kill them and not hide this act from the eyes of the world! On the contrary there has been proper burial and even cricifix on the graves..."so investigation will pop up in the future"! Therefore there should be definite reason/s which has not been truthfully investigated. Children mortality is one reason. In 1960s in India out of every 1000 children 250 died of mortality... Just because those children were studying in that school...therefore the school is responsible for this!!!!

Christianity was brought to India in 52 AD by Saint Thomas the Apostle who was a personal follower of Jesus. He was in Goa. There were St Thomas crosses in Goa and early Oriental Catholics in Goa. But they were without a priest for centuries until the Portuguese came to India. The early Oriental Catholics were following strange hybrid Christian customs which the Portuguese found abhorrent against the Christian faith. They straightened them out n included them into the Latin rite. Know the actual facts.

@Sonia Dey Nah unfortunately the lower castes are in majority actually if you see the census the so called lower caste have greater percentage in population but they are lagging behind in rural areas and so the power and resources are consolidated in the upper castes like in UP where they historically were better off and when they see them rising they tend to show their authority on them do you know that in some government exams recently the cut off for OBC even surpassed the general by a little margin !!Google it!!and in Bengal to the percentage of Brahmins and its associates are less than 10 percent but Bengal is much better than UP on violence but lately I have read comments of some Brahmin who consider lower castes as criminals committing crime on woman!! I was once trolled by a woman having surname Chakraborty who was a complete stranger to me in social media that was unexpected!!

And by the way Irish - British issue started way back since end of 11th century due to British Colonization/territory/control issue, not because of religion. In the recent 19th centure, the issue was still about occupation and self government, and it's just happened that Irish has many Protestants. about floodwaters / natural disasters etc (all over the world): “The nations were angry, and Your wrath has come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that You should reward Your servants the prophets and the saints, and those who fear Your name, small and great, and should destroy those who destroy the earth.” (Revelation 11: 18 - NKJV) In the coming days, sooner than we might even think, God’s wrath will come. “The nations” will face the “wrath” of God, “the dead,” those separated from Christ, will experience a time of God’s judgment. There will be “reward” for His “servants the prophets and the saints, and those who fear (His) name” but for many others there will be a terrible time of dread. One group that is singled out in our text for judgment is “those who destroy the earth.” It is said that God will “destroy” them. It is clear from our passage that there are those who do not take care of God’s creation. Even though a curse is upon the earth due to man’s sin (Genesis 3: 17), it does not mean that we are given license to “destroy” that which God has created. And in these days in which you and I live man is in the process of doing just that; destroying the earth and its inhabitants. One writer has noted several ways in which man is carrying this out: Global water pollution Global air pollution Global spread of nuclear and chemical and other sophisticated weapons of mass slaughter Global erosion of essential layers of topsoil Chemical pollution of lands and food chains with toxic wastes, nuclear wastes, insecticides, and other substances Animal and plant extinctions Destruction of vital rain forests and other important ecological communities And of course . . . through the practice of sin man pollutes the earth, upsets the balance God intended, shows little regard for that which God has given him. As I move about it is not uncommon to see men and women toss a gum wrapper, or a cigarette butt, or a plastic bottle carelessly out the window of a car, or do so as they walk along the street. Small acts it may seem, but nevertheless, when multiplied by a growing populace, they are acts that have their destructive effect, and that show a disregard for “the earth,” for that which God has created and given to man to care for. I know that “the whole creation groans” (Romans 8: 22), and that it longs for the release from the curse brought about by sin, but that does not mean that while we are here on this earth we are not to take care of it to the best of our ability. Even though “citizens of heaven” (Philippians 3: 20), we are called to be responsible occupants of wherever we may currently be. We are to do what we can to take care of what God has given us, not “destroy” it. (source) reasonsforhopejesus com/those-who-destroy-the-earth/ additional thoughts (about recycling): we talked about what recycling is and why it is so important for the environment. In order to create a more sustainable world for us and for future generations, we have to make the effort to dispose of our waste in a way that is not harmful to the planet. After all, up to 70% of our waste can be recycled or reused. Reusing items is a great way of extending the life cycle of materials. But if you don’t reuse your packaging, make sure you recycle it! There are several ways to take full advantage of the recycling opportunities in your area. Find out what you can recycle Far more materials and products can be recycled than you might think. However, there is no universal standard, which means there are different recycling systems in different regions. The best way to find out is to check with your local recycling centre etc. They can tell you how materials are separated, and you can arrange your waste disposal accordingly. Waste can generally be distinguished into three categories: Organic waste, such as food and garden waste (compostable) Recyclables, including plastic, paper, glass and metal Residual waste, which summarises the remaining non-recyclable materials Find out where you can recycle Where you can take your recyclables depends largely on economic, ecological and geographical factors. There are different waste management systems in place all over the world. In Europe, for example, there is a deposit system for bottles, which offers great return rates for packaging. Systems can range from a collection system, where authorised collectors take the separated waste from your home, to systems where you have to bring your separated waste to an official collection point. Find out from your local council or the Internet what your options are. The most important point to remember is not to dispose of waste outdoors, which could endanger humans, animals or the environment. Start the recycling process at home Separating and cleaning materials as best as possible is a crucial step in recycling. Organising your recycling can help the process immensely. Find a system of storage that suits your home to assist you in separating your materials. You could display a picture or description of what can be recycled to make it easier for all family members to separate the waste correctly. Crushing your packaging, to make it as small as possible, reduces the size of your waste and thus the space it takes up. Contact your local authorities if you feel more could be done in terms of recycling in your area and share your ideas with them. The more people are involved, the more products will be recycled, and consequently, the strain on our environment will decrease. Support brands that are involved in recycling Find out which brands are engaged and active in recycling activities. Keep an eye out for recycling logos or claims. If there is a recycling logo on the packaging, such as the Green Dot, you know that the company supports the regional recycling activities and has thus implemented extended producer responsibility. Some companies will state on their packaging how much of their product is made of recycled material. If products with recycled content gain in popularity and are bought regularly, other companies will realise the importance of this topic to consumers and thus to their customers. + support ocean / river! / coastal / beach / forest clean up organizations?? would be awesome! + please be careful: corona! etc.

As usual, you have sprung another unusual topic on the viewer. Something about which few if any, write or speak about. Roman church, and after the birth of Protestantism, have always had lot of blood on their hands. Between 5th and 15th centuries, church was the defecto ruler of Europe. Pagan religions in Europe were violently destroyed during the dark ages. Dissenters were tortured most barbarously. Inquisitions in Spain drove out the Jews and Muslims, sans their wealth. Religious wars in Europe until the peace of Westphalia resulted in the death of millions of common people. Both the catholics and Protestants suffered grave handicap, hardships and disabilities, whenever they were in minority. Destruction of native culture in Africa, Australia, and South America were more feathers in the cap of Christianity, not just the Roman church. Behind the facade of charity, lies a violent history.

Same is happening in India. I studied in a Catholic run school in South India. Girls were not allowed to wear bindis or flowers. Hindu Students were not allowed to wear anything which signifies the religion like sacred thread on the wrists or the neck. You could however wear a cross. We were punished for wishing each other during Hindu and Muslim festivals but it was mandatory for us to participate in Christmas events. We were punished, fined and humiliated infront of the whole school if we spoke our mother tongue. Singing competition was only about Christian songs. For poor students, the church used to help monetarily in exchange of them getting converted to Christianity. We were taken to the church on Saturdays compulsorily to pray and watch movies on Christianity, Jesus and Mary. They trained us to hate our own culture at the young age of 6-7.

@Tomato Trees But isn't that what Hinduism does exactly. Whenever I go to a temple, with a Thalia ( brass plate) filled with flowers, sweet, I just get Darshan of God. Silently I thank him and if required ask for mannat, offer my plate to the priest giving my name, gotra, etc. Wait till the plate is returned after being blessed and that is all.

@Tomato Trees I'm saying.. everyone can have the right to do anything about their religious beliefs. Problem starts is when one person of one religion talks to another person from a different religion. Just keep everything indoors. Makes things 1000x better. That's my point. Imagine the amount of growth we would have achieved had we not fallen for the British's divide n rule policy dividing all religion and starting communal riots. In my opinion we are still letting those ppl win.

@Tomato Trees A person can have this own freedom to convert to any religion AT HIS OWN FREE WILL AND BY HIS OWN DECISION WHICH IS NOT INFLUENCED BY ANYONE. But if we can limit all this to one's own home, family, worship places, Things will be so chill. Imagine filling a form out where u have to tick your gender and not religion, caste, sub caste n all that. Those should be considered as personal things and not something you should put in an application form. P.S. I'm not against any religion. Not against any caste. I respect every faith equally and I see a human being for his character and not for their caste, religion, age, race etc..,. This is my opinion which I always felt for a long time.

As an alumnus of a Christian school I beg to differ, we've always had Students of different religions in our school and as for proselytism, most families weren't coerced into Christianity. As far as I know catholic Church doesn't prohibited us from our cultural and traditional practices. I know of many Hindu educational institutions where only Hindus are accepted. It's a really contentious issue so it shouldn't have been brought up now in the first place. As for the past, every religion has their own fair share of wrongdoings. Epilogue: I'm not here to argue, just trying to say that she was biased. Looking down on others to feel good about oneself isn't something worth preaching. That's the implicit message people will get watching this video, which some might subconsciously practice. As a agnostic person from a Christian family "I find all religion beautiful but not all religious men(women)."
