The candy company had to take Babe Ruth to court over it because he claimed it was named after him because he was a household name at the time. Babe Ruth lost.

I am a lifelong New Jersey resident who never considered Grover Cleveland a true New Jerseyian since his family had moved to New York when he was 12. Thank for informing me that he is buried in Princeton. I had literally just bought a biography of him because I had read one on Benjamin Harrison and I wanted to give Cleveland a fair hearing. I hope to travel to Princeton cemetery a veiw his grave now. Thank you for your information and your videos.

His birthplace is really interesting in Caldwell I’ve been there before with my mom. Also fun fact while most people think the Baby Ruth Candy Bar is named after Babe Ruth. It’s actually named after Ruth Cleveland who tragically died at the age of 12 on January 7th 1904. Following doctors advice Mrs. Cleveland did not attend her funeral but former president Woodrow Wilson did.

She was one of the first students at a woman's liberal arts college, called Wells College, located in Aurora, NY (on the east side of Cayuga lake). Wells College was founded by Henry Wells the owner of Wells Fargo Stage Coach (later a bank) Frances Folsom's second husband was Thomas J. Preston Jr., a professor at Princeton University. Thomas J. Preston and Frances Cleveland (m. 1913) were married for 34 years. A noted scholar he studied in Europe as well as the USA. He is buried in Rosedale Cemetery Montclair, Essex County, New Jersey, USA, next to his first wife, Jane Elizabeth “Jennie” Weller Preston and their children. Princeton University used to be called the College of New Jersey, it was originally, primarily a Presbyterian seminary. *Regarding Aaron Burr* "Aaron Burr Jr. was born on February 6, 1756, in Newark, located in what was then the Province of New Jersey. He was the second child of the Reverend Aaron Burr Sr., a Presbyterian minister and second president of the College of New Jersey, which became Princeton University. His mother, Esther Edwards Burr, was the daughter of noted theologian Jonathan Edwards and his wife Sarah." -- Wikipedia. That is why he is buried in Princeton Cemetery. In 1893 Grover Cleveland had oral surgery performed to remove a cancerous growth from his mouth. This operation was done on a private yacht.

Those Witherspoon's are ancestors of Laura Jean Reese Witherspoon, a.k.a. Hollywood's Reese Witherspoon. She has quite an elaborate family history back to the signers of the Declaration of Independence! 🎉

Umm. New Jersey is not part of New England. New England is six states, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Though parts of upstate New York are like New England.

If these Headstones could talk, the Stories that They could tell. Isn’t it amazing how the United States has changed, but has stayed the same, in some respects. John Witherspoon is interesting as he was the only minister to sign the Declaration of Independence and one of two signers to be born in Scotland.

I went to Princeton Cemetery years ago...at least 30 years ago, if not more with my grandparents. I'm 39, and I was around 9 or ten. I was always interested in Presidents. I had a book called "Presidents: Birth places, Homes and Burial Sites". I read that thing religiously. It went into detail on every president's (From Washington to Clinton, at the time of it's publication) birth place, home and grave. My grandparents and I were in Princeton because I had to see a specialty doctor there....we decided to go to the cemetery while we were there because I wanted to visit President Cleveland. This was the days before GPS and Find A Grave...we got there and asked where Princeton Cemetery was. We were told there are two Princeton Cemeteries. We found the correct one, and while we were driving past to go to the entrance, I spotted the President's grave from the street. I pointed and told my grandparents "There it is! I see it!" It was a ways off, but I recognized it from my book. I just remember my grandfather being beside himself that I spotted it from the road, and it was actually the correct grave once we got up to it. 😂 At the time, we didn't realize Aaron Burr was also buried there. I enjoyed watching your video. I recommend that you read about historical cemeteries you visit. Princeton Cemetery is the Westminster Abbey of the US. The graves you visited by Aaron Burr Jr’s grave were very historic. Jonathan Edwards is the greatest theologian in American History and led the 1st Great Awakening. Aaron Burr Sr is buried right next to Jonathan Edwards but you went the other direction. Aaron Burr Sr was famous clergyman and President of Princeton before Edwards. Both died having very short tenures as did the few others on the row of graves there, like Samuel Davies. Princeton was called the Log College or College of NJ in those days and was a divinity school to train preachers and missionaries. You were standing in the middle of one of the most fascinating places in our history. I could take a month to cover the important people who are interred there. I thought I’d help fill you in on some details you didn’t know about.

Unfortunately, I was on a 6 Week Rd. trip to visit the gravesites of the US President and I wasn’t able to spend a lot of time at each cemetery, so I missed visiting a lot of other famous gravesites too. almost every cemetery I visited was full of famous people that I wanted to visit, but didn’t have time to. It would’ve turned into a 6 Month Rd. trip instead of a 6 Week Rd. trip. Not enough hours in the day! 😲😩

I don't think he got to choose who was to be hung or not. That is up to the courts. Cleveland simply pulled the lever. If Aaron Burr had not "defended his honor," he might have become president!

Another great video, Steve! Aaron Burr's daughter Theodosia was lost at sea off the coast of South Carolina in 1813 when she was 29. For years after, he had to listen to all of the theories about her death.

Paul Tulane was born near Princeton, NJ and died in the area so it makes sense he’s buried at that cemetery.

Steve, Rwv. Jonathon Edward's was not only the former president of Princton but he was major character of The Great Awakening. His sermon, Sinners in The Hands of an Angry God" is considered The greatest message preached in North America ( check out the story behind this message). He died young due to a treatment for sickness.He is/was taught in Many American History Clasdes snd his writings are goid reading for Theologians.

One more thing, Ruth Cleveland was daughter of Grover. She is memorialized by The naming of The Baby Ruth Candy Bar in her honor. She is buried there with her Father.

Another grave of note: José and Mary Louise "Kitty" Menéndez, the couple murdered by their sons Lyle and Erik, are also buried here.

As always, a great video adventure Steve. Not only were you near Cleveland and Burr’s graves, you were near the “grave” of Albert Einstein. After his death at Princeton in 1955, he was cremated and his ashes were either scattered on the grounds of Princeton Institute for Advanced Studies or (most likely) they were scattered in Milestone River which runs through Princeton.

Thank you very much for your channel, Steve. Grover Cleveland was the first Democratic president since before the Civil War. The next after him would be Woodrow Wilson (just before and during WW1). Cleveland taught at Princeton and viewed this town as his home until he died in 1908. Jonathan Edwards (7:00) was America's greatest theologian who had a scientific bent. He was one of those courageous few in the earliest waves of smallpox inoculation. Sadly, it proved lethal and he died of smallpox after only serving as head of Princeton College for a very short tenure. Thanks again, Steve. Best,

Five years after Grover Cleveland's Frances married Thomas Preston, A Greek Instructor. He's buried at Rosedale Cemetery in New Jersey.

The pastel-colored blossoms on deciduous trees is commonplace in early spring. If you watch the Masters golf tournament in early April, you will see many brightly colored blossoms as the television directors like to put them into shots of the tournament. In your interesting resume of Grover Cleveland, you could have added that he was the first presidential candidate to win the popular vote in three elections (1884, 1888, and 1892). However, his Republican challenger, Benjamin Harrison, won the electoral vote in 1888 and was elected president.

Thanks for mentioning that Joseph. If it weren’t for the electoral college, we would have a lot fewer Republican presidents.

What should be mentioned is that in the three elections he won the popular vote, but Benjamin Harrison won the presidency by winning the electoral college. Cleveland then won the electoral college the first and third time. I believe there was five times where someone won the popular vote but not the electoral college, the last two times in 2000 and 2016. I hope Cleveland remains the only president to to serve two non-consecutive terms, because if not we will no longer have presidents to elect. Cleveland also had an illegitimate child and his last children (with his wife) died in 1995 and his wife in 1947.

Sometime during the Truman Presidency, Frances Cleveland Preston had been invited to a luncheon. There she met General Dwight Eisenhower. The fine general did not recognize the former First Lady. When he heard she had previously lived in DC, he asked where? She said, the White House. I’m sure that was cause for heavy laughter. A story for you, Steve: late in life Frances had severe cataracts. So much so, it prompted her both to learn braille and acquire a braille typewriter. When she finally had cataract surgery, she continued to use the braille typewriter to translate books into braille for blind children. From all accounts, Frances Cleveland-Preston, was pretty close to being an angel on earth. As many women of her day, she was staunchly against Women’s Suffrage. She felt it would lead us to where we are today. She and Grover were deeply involved in Princeton University. They funded many of the students educations. Glad your surgery was a great success!❤

They ran the homes like a business, they fed the families healthy well balanced meals, etc. women were important. Now many of us are all unhealthy and overweight. Women were the most important when it came to families and the children. No one picked up the roles women deserted. That’s what suffrage and feminism were about. A cause for women to justify their dropping their end in the natural order. Why aren’t women happy today. The best they can ever be is like a man. They’re nothing special, as they had been. If you can say we and our children are better off today for having no guiding force in the home that women used to be, I think you’re deluded by the politics of today. Women call marriage the patriarchy, but most homes had been matriarchal, as women were the authority that formed our children into useful and productive citizens. Yes, I said it, women dropped the ball. However women arrived at the decision that raising kids, helping the less fortunate and running a household weren’t important endeavors escapes me. Btw in the early days of women’s suffrage, the greatest opposition to it, were women! Believe it or not, there is an ever growing movement among women to try to return to the days of yore, where women were women. They are rapidly becoming disenfranchised with the decision a small group of women foisted on them over 100/150 years ago. Not my word: women’s.

Jonathan Edwards was Aaron Burr's grandfather. Edwards was a Puritan minister, but his grandson lived a far different lifestyle.

It always amazes me that Californians are surprised it rains every few days in most of the US...😅

Invest in some galoshes, Steve! Then, you'll be able to stomp around wet graveyard grounds to your heart's content. A good rain slicker helps, too. Interesting to think we may see a second non-consecutive serving president. Love him or hate him, our kids will study Donald Trump and these years we're living in.

FYI the Witherspoon, former president of Princeton and signer of the declaration of independence is an ancestor of Reese Witherspoon. I just watched an old Biography show about her.

Philly, nothing about Ben Franklin? There are other signers of the Declaration of Independence with him.

I knew exacly who you visiting, just from the titles! I'm always reminded of the "got milk" commercial when thinking about Aaron Burr. Since then, I expect his name to be pronouced as if your mouth is full of peanut butter, just like in the commercial. 😂 😂
