Grateful Dead - Touch Of Grey (Orchard Park, NY 7/4/89)

Музыка

"The second set-opening Touch Of Grey is a triumphant rendition, one that Dick Latvala, when he first heard it, commented 'that's the best Touch Of Grey I've ever heard!' This was the Dead's first full stadium tour as headliners (they played stadium tours in 1986 with Dylan and Petty, and in 1987 with Dylan), and they played so well during this tour that they made these massive venues feel intimate." - David Lemieux

    Man, Jerry is easily one of the best and most honest/likeable guitarists ever. What makes him so great is that he didn't have the ego of being known as a "rock star;" a title that has undoubtedly been a factor responsible for numerous band breakups over the years. Jerry doesn't front with wild outfits or stage theatrics, and he doesn't need to. Jerry seemingly let his guard down up on stage, and had confidence in really letting the music itself speak for him, which is why his playing/singing seems so personal and really connects with you. He just goes up on stage in plain clothes and just casually plays his music as if he is your long-time friend just sitting in your living room. That's really how he seemed to act. Even in front of sea of people, jerry could make you feel like he was performing just for you. No material or visual things like you find in 80s hair metal and the outrageous "rock star" outfits that were the rage back then, which were a large part of any band’s success during that period. He just comes across as being a happy person in any videos that you find of him playing, singing, or grooving during a song. He is just such a positive light that really touches me very deeply here, nearly 30 years since his death. Garcia just had it and knew exactly what to play at any given moment.

    Jerry never looked like he was trying to be a rock star, constantly hopping, grimacing, pulling a Hey!LookatmeplayingTHISlickaren'tyouimpressed? look, he was always "in touch" with his fellow bandmates on stage and in constant rehersals because they had been through mind bending experiences together, paid many dues and had a VERY unique history. Not so with the lame "cover band" at all.

    So well put! 1,001 reasons why people like us are drawn to this band. Sure they had their hang ups and faults but through all the bs there was something real and sincere that is sadly very rare.

  • @STSGuitar16

    @STSGuitar16

    Жыл бұрын

    @@richieboy6825 the music was entirely nothing but sincere throughout their entire career. None of their songs feel phoned-in at all, and most feel completely timeless as if they’ve always existed. There is just a great aura around the band and their music that is entirely unique in the history of “rock” bands. No one acted like them, no one looked like them, and no one played like them. Maybe the coolest thing of all was that they were breaking that ground as they went. There was no such thing as a “jam band” (in rock music, at least) until they invented it. No one was using rock instruments for long improvisational passages back then; the only thing close being the improvisational aspect of jazz. One of the most important bands in history by a long shot and for so many different reasons.

    As a kid just getting into the mysterious LSD dropping band the Grateful Dead, this was the song, (of course), that first called to me. After that it was listening to my dad’s vinyl of American Beauty one summer long ago. I listened to it all summer as I “courted” this girl I was in love with at the time. But it was Touch of Grey that first got me, and it’s a super important song for that reason. It’s also a damn great song in its own right, and I’d call it an anthem really cause it’s BIG, if you get what I’m saying.

    My twin brother and I were born in 1988 here in Buffalo, NY. Due to being born 2 months premature, we had to remain hooked up to a breathing apparatus for several weeks. Ryan almost didn't make it. On our drive home from the hospital, "Touch Of Grey" came on the radio. To this day, our Dad cries when this song comes on, and he is not one to show his emotions. Thank you. "We will get by. We will survive!"

    It's truly a fantastic blessing that we can still tune in & hear Dead & Co... Admittedly it isn't what we had in the late 80s & 90s, beloved members have passed, but that spirit, it still turns on, tunes in & dances.... a younger generation catches a glimpse of the unique blessing we shared in another time's forgotten space. And the doses are remarkably close to as potent. Blessed Be brother... Did U happen to attend the last tour at Alpine Valley? Seems like it was 89 as well... So many heads converged that state of Wisconsin called it an emergency. Bid ye GoodNight closer 3rd night. The whole experience/community of Dead tour community, tuned in & taking part, sharing, sum total greater than the sum of its parts experience was miraculous & probably unique in all of human history. A spark still shines as long as there's memory of the time. Let there be songs to fill the air!

    This is perfection, the best rendition of this song, which combines philosophical depth, spiritual meaning and ribald humor like no other composition by anyone. The harmony is not just musical: these guys are in spiritual harmony, with one another and with the world. The smiles convey what a good time they were having. Jerry's smile near the end reinforces my conviction that he was actually an angel, or maybe Jupiter - or more likely Santa Claus.

    Love the dead and would love for other lovers of the dead to hear the work we are doing to keep this kind of music alive in 2020. It isn't as good as Jerry and the boys, but it does have a little something going on. We are just unknown local rockers who march to the beat of our own drum. Please give us a listen; It isn't for everyone, but surely it is for someone.
