"Touch of Grey" is about the members of the band getting older or dying. It's a reflection on mortality. It's too bad you never went to a concert, because they were huge fun; everybody had a good time. It wasn't like people who didn't go think: it wasn't an orgy, everybody wasn't stoned out of their minds, etc. People were happy. A lot of fans knew each other. Most of the people were nice. The band didn't always play great, but they're only human - nobody is great all the time. And it was peaceful. There was a good vibration. Practically no fights or violence; you didn't have to be worried about getting hurt. It was a simpler and better time. That's why we miss it.

Yo man.. Jerry wrote this AFTER he almost died after slipping into a coma for days/week. This song was a TRIUMPHANT return to their 25yr+ touring schedule after a long break for him to heal. This song was a celebration. Sadly Jerry passed in '95. Thankfully, the scene will live on forever. Thank you for joining in, please tell your family and friends. WE WILL GET BY! PS: You might have never been able to see the Grateful Dead in their original lineup... but, to be fair, their original lineup ended in the early '70's. The Grateful Dead were never about a certain group of people, they were ALWAYS about a scene and about the music. YES, there were special members like Jerry/Bobby/Phil/Billy and Mickey.. but the music and the scene ALWAYS surpassed the band itself. If you ever want to see 'The Grateful Dead', find a local bluegrass/jam festival and go meet some wonderful and peaceful folks!

The Grateful Dead is an endless rabbit hole. Ventured down many years ago, ...and I'm still down here! Do the mainstay Dead tunes like Casey Jones, Truckin', Sugar Magnolia, Ripple, Friend of the Devil etc., then you'll be ready for some live gems, however they are usually quite lengthy for reactions. Great for you're personal listening as though. Great reaction as always!!!

The Grateful Dead was the only live band to have a taper section where you could set up audio equipment to tape their live shows. They felt they were giving the music to us and if we wanted to keep it that was up to us. I have live show going back to 1970 all the way up to their last show in 1995.

The Grateful Dead were the first band in history that could announce a stadium tour the day before it was supposed to start and still sell out every show within hours. Deadheads actually followed the band all over the country and set up basically little cities outside of each venue where they sold merchandise, food, any kind of drug that you would want to get, all just to fund their trip to the next city. The Dead also encouraged their fans to tape their shows and actually set up part of each venue just for people with recorders, so there are thousands of audios of their concerts out there. I got to see them live once back in 1986, and it was an incredible experience. And it’s funny that you say improvisation, because that was half their set. 10 songs may last three hours LOL but their musicianship was incredible.

Following the Dead remains some of the best memories/non-memories of my life. I always said every person should experience the Dead live, just once. It's not just the actual concert - no. A Dead show starts when you pack the car to drive to the camp ground pre-show. Set up your camp (sometimes it was just sleeping in the car depending on the weather), and get to the venue at noon on the day of the show. Hang out on Shakedown Street until the gates open to the show around 6 pm-ish. Make sure you're inside the gate to see Traffic open for The Dead, or Bob Dylan, or Rusted Root, or The Black Crowes...

This was one of my favorite videos when I was a little kid. This and “Sledgehammer” by Peter Gabriel. I just loved those weird videos when I was 5 years old or so. Of course, after that it was “Pour Some Sugar on Me” by Def Leppard, and that’s probably because of the way I saw the older girls start dancing when it came on. At any rate, great stuff! I love these trips down memory lane, and your reactions. Keep em coming!!

Touch of Gray was The Grateful Dead's first music video. The song was recrded live at a concert in The Bay Area. At the end of the concert, the audience was asked to step outside the venue while they set-up for filming the video. When everything was ready, the entire audience came back in and had a real, natural reaction to what they were treated to. They started performing the song at concerts in 1982, but did not record it in a studio until 1987. (This is the way they did their songs: write them, put them in their concerts, and then studio recording whenever they got around to it. Performing was their # 1 priority. They hold the offical world record for most live performances by one rock group. As for the song itself: a couple of word substitutions will help you understand its meaning. "Every silver lining has its touch of grey". Substitute life for silver lining and problems for touch of grey. This was a song about getting past life's difficulties. There are one or two real world crisis in there. A dairy region was found to have a petroleum product contamination in their cows' milk sometime during the 1970s. "Cows are giving kerosene". So, no matter how bleak things look, we WILL come out on the other side. "I (We) WILL survive". A great song with a greater message!

Phil Lesh, The Grateful Dead's bassist, has a restaurant/bar/small concert venue in San Rafael (Marin County, just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco). The name of the place is Terrapin Crossroads. Their house band is a group called Midnight North. The lead singer of the group, Grahame Lesh, is Phil Lesh's son. I went to a concert of theirs a couple years back at Terrapin Crossroads with some friends. We had dinner there first (the restaurant is *seriously* good!) and then went to the concert. Midnight North played two sets. The first set was their own original music. The second set was a tribute to CSN (Crosby, Stills & Nash). Phil Lesh was there, and he got up on stage and played with the band during the second set. It was an *amazing* evening! If you get a chance to either check out the place, or the band, or both (once we are able to attend live music events and go out to restaurants again, that is), I would totally recommend! This is my favorite Midnight North song... kzread.info/dash/bejne/dn94qqOSXbffc5c.html

The Good Ol' Grateful Dead! I was in High School when this came out, had a summer job at a fish store in New Rochelle (of all places...) and I used to make runs upstate to buy fish from other markets to bring back. Commercial vehicles weren't allowed on the parkway which was the fastest route, but my boss told me to go for it, as time was of the essence! Speeding up the parkway in that busted up fish van blasting this song with the windows down (one of the VERY few Dead tunes that got radio play) with just a hint of breaking the law was one of the highlights of my early years!! PEACE EVERYONE

Saw them at Soldier Field Chicago during their last tour before Brother Jerry passed. When I was working theater security at the World Music in Tinley Park, they did 3 shows. 2nd day was a scorcher. We started at 9am because of the camping fanatics and the band was showing up early. I was strolling around the theater without much to do. Just happened to be around the backstage entrance gate for bands and crew when a couple of limousines were showing up. The crowd outside were going wild so I stayed to help incase anyone jumped the fence or stormed the gate. The supervisor told me to walk the limos in and stand by them when they parked. I'm thinking to myself, "Whys everyone so excited. it's so early and the bands usually fly in before the show" No way was Jerry or anyone going to be here now. So the limo stops. I am standing by the side of the trunk near the back doors. The door opens and some guy says "Thanks man". I turn and there's JERRY GARCIA with his hand out. I'm thinking there are about 10k people out there that would rip my arm off right now. The boss tells us he's ordered lunch for us and we should go cool off under the cover of the pavilion and wait for lunch. So we're all just hanging out and I'm lying on one of the walls with my eyes closed when I hear the speakers kick in and a violin playing. Then a sax doing a jazz solo. I'm like wtf is going on? I open my eyes and look at the stage and there's Jerry all alone with a guitar and a sampler just noodling through samples entertaining us all through lunch break with our very own Jerry concert. I was never really a starstruck person, which made me good at my job. But, man, that there is something that's stuck with me for 30 years now. I think its because of the "importance" others have put on him and his music, it's made such an impression. I have a lot of memories of my experiences during that time. But this one is the biggest.

Filmed at Laguna Seca Raceway, Monterey, CA. In the early morning hours of May 10, 1987. Allot of the smoke you see is fog coming in from the Pacific ocean. They started filming about an hour after the second show of the 3-day run and they must have done 50+ takes, alternating the band and the skeletons, but we loved it!. They finished around 5am, and they still had one more show to do, later that day. ..It was a Sunday, Mothers Day and my birthday! :)

I was there in the '60's when these S.F. groups were just local bands, playing at the Avalon or Fillmore. We kids knew they were better than what was playing on the radio. The best time of any concert was when they'd get together and jam teaching each other new sounds maybe until 2 or 3 in the morning. I remember the first time I took L.S.D. was at one of their concerts. They weren't a commercial band only in it for the money. They were there to perform. Sometimes one of them would get 'hot' and they'd let him do his solo. Every concert was different, they were loosely scripted. It was like they were always experimenting trying new things. On our local juke box there are 2501 of their songs, more than any other! Their fans would follow them from coast to coast around the country, they were called "Deadheads". The last concert I saw them at was in Las Vegas. I was hired to be part of a clean up crew and Bob Weir demanded we'd be let inside. There were no drugs at the party unless you went outside to smoke some. I was totally straight but I got high just listening to the music. They were that good. They never did a protest song, they were there to PARTY!
