The way is to heaven. The song was written in 1971 while Hunter was drinking allot and written for a dying boy. It is said it is loose interpretation of the 23 Psalm. Garcia was to sing it first 04/71 in London and was bet $500 that he couldn't remember the words because he was so high...........A great classic song no matter how you cut it.......

Thanks Bingogh , the Grateful Dead have been getting me through basically Life for the Last 30 years. Jerry wielded so much power even though he was just a basic street Guy like the rest of us. I was lucky , and I mean Lucky , enough to have seen them in the Boston area ( mostly Old Boston Garden ) in the 80s. I will Survive.

Just a few days ago, I came across this song. It didn't hit me at first who sang this and when it did, I thought I've got to listen to the Grateful Dead. Something I've never done, on purpose, in all my 66 years. I've been struggling to understand this piece, having fallen in love from the first note, but unable to yet understand what makes a Deadhead. Why I may have been one back in the day if I had heard this then. Well, tonight it hit me. I have been living a Grateful Dead life for the last 40+ years. I've been living this song. I was a ripple in the water. Wow.

If Anyone saw the movie Mask with Cher and Eric Stoltz , if you listen close when Rusty finds Rocky Dead , you hear the Guy on the radio say “ Grateful Dead , Ripple “. Then you hear the song. Very Moving. An appropriate song for that scene. This song speaks volumes for so many going through times like that. I lost a Brother recently and this song got me through the rough road I had to travel. Thank You Jerry and Robert Hunter as well.

It'll be interesting to see how the world holds up in 33 years, which should be when I'm about to hit 100.

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung Would you hear my voice come through the music? Would you hold it near as it were your own? It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken Perhaps they're better left unsung I don't know, don't really care Let there be songs to fill the air Ripple in still water When there is no pebble tossed Nor wind to blow Reach out your hand, if your cup be empty If your cup is full, may it be again Let it be known there is a fountain That was not made by the hands of men There is a road, no simple highway Between the dawn and the dark of night And if you go, no one may follow That path is for your steps alone Ripple in still water When there is no pebble tossed Nor wind to blow You who choose to lead must follow But if you fall you fall alone If you should stand then who's to guide you? If I knew the way I would take you home
