There were days when all we ever wanted was to learn and love and grow. Wow, just so gorgeous, an epitaph for Garcia-Hunter.

“Once we grew into our shoes, we told them where to go” paradoxical genius double entendre. “If the shoe fits wear it”, “tough shoes to fill”, “I envied the man with new shoes...”, “don’t criticize another until you’ve walked a mile in their moccasins “, “a shoe in”,”lost my boots in transit”, “walked barefoot in the snow”. Days Between is the most powerful 1990s Grateful Dead song written. Robert Hunter brilliance combined with Jerry Garcia forlorn emotion. Heavy dose of light.

I loved hearing it because I felt like it was Hunter's sort of epitaph so to speak to Jerry imho....Once we grew into our shoes We told them where to go Walked halfway around the world On promise of the glow Stood upon a mountain top Walked barefoot in the snow Gave the best we had to give How much we'll never know we'll never know ⚡🌹🎸

A long and forgotten tune. Smiles at the moon. Blood boils to butterflies. Which then transfers the tune to all of the new fresh breed eager to hear. Blue Cheer My Dear or just another bus driving by. The Sun Rises as the Good Cry comes. Tears will always fall for the great ones. I love you Jerry and all who love you and all who have yet to discover you and all who will never know of you.

I read these lyrics before getting the opportunity to hear them in proper tune due to that current state of being and time of life. I delt with unexpected displacement and separation from society by our judicial system. Gratefully these words and others from these particular fellas made time enjoyable enough to pass gracefully. So Grateful!

to me this was about the transition from the early days to the later days. from when the parking lots were clean to the filth that was so casually left behind. from when we were free because of our thoughts of peace love and understanding to the doubt that these thoughts may not be enough. a very moving piece, indeed. only you and me can rise above and maintain the glory of the early days and make them the glory of the now. only you and me.

The lyrics of this Masterpiece are literally the culmination of the era, remind me of the shows where people died up in Vermont or wherever, people crashing gates and dying. I walked past a guy, at the last show the Dead played before Soldier's Field, with a guy crying out for his Mom, from 50 feet down a broken gulley of granite stones in the pitch black after the show. Nobody cared as they walked past. "Mooooooooooooom. Moooooooom" This reminds me of the devolution of Dead shows, Bread and Puppet, the whole incredibly beautiful scene of the 60s turning into something rapist and broken and fucked, not knowing what they mean as they inperpret and indulge and go into darkness with the freedom that these visionaries lived and then lost sight of themselves. EDIT: And no, I'm ashamed to say I didn't go down the gulley to help the guy, either.

First of all, I was at THIS show as a 19yr old. This song hit me hard. Then, about a half year later, I saw them in Vegas when people died from heat exhaustion & dehydration in 120°F heat. I was almost one of those people but the heads around me guided me over to a water hose over by the bleachers which is where I was given a new life which I'm still living. But this performance here tonight has got to be one of the best, if not THE BEST version of Days Between.

Please don't hate. This is beautiful and my purvue is ALWAYS with "the man" - Jerry Garcia simply surpasses in every sense of what an interesting and engaging musician can be and achieve - without question - case closed - BUT (and I NEVER in my wildest imagination thought there'd come the situation wherein I were to say) BOB WEIR's version that's a live soundstage recording with the arrangement being mostly piano on lead - KICKS THIS ONE's ASS -.. This one with Jerry is "nice", "spooky", "a great homage to himself", "classic" and all the other descriptions that I do not deny.. BUT - Weir's is SO much more emotional and evocative of the passed years these men spent together, it achieves a sort of spiritual perfection.. BECAUSE of his place on the stage as "the other one " his voice relaxes into its own and doesn't strain to BE anything more than Bob Weir. And for that reason his musicsl-subconscious-emotional perspective channels the decades of the Dead and it reads as a dream or a personal episode of life flashing before ones eyes not AT death - but at some point before.. His acceptance of, and calm gentleness in relation to the bittersweet theme conveys TO all of us not only THEIR experience and HIS OWN - but also ALL OF.OURS'.. SEE - WE WERE THE DEAD TOO.. JUST AS MUCH AND IN SOME WAYS MORE THAN THE BAND.. A COLLECTIVE OF HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF EXPERIENCES, LIVES, DEATHS, LOVES, AND GREAT MUSIc experiences

Greatness moves across the vast American expanse Continental drifters making gold records Busking eternal neon street corners Crooning tales of mountain witches and vengeance West Virginia coal camp dust Kicking busted floorboards Down the hillbilly highway and back Stringing stacatoed 16th notes From the southern Appalachian trail Pine sap Georgia box car tunes Florida sweaty swamps, south Carolina coastal dunes, Back up through the Cumberland gap, Ol traditions runneth deep... That place where, Irish, African-American, and Native American all meet- Where Elvis learned to stomp his feet, Jerry Lee to pound the keys, Rual music and indigenous music, and the pioneer spirit of young post war America built Rock and roll.... It's spirit still lingers today....

They were going to become really great again if Jerry was still alive in 95-2000s. They finally hit on a new direction after losing Brent.
