I was there for a completely different experience but saw this show. I was there as part of a church near Kingston that took care of orphan children for 8 months. I was given a ticket to the show and 3 big joints as a going home gift from a local. I flew home in time for xmas. I had a blast at the show and so did my friends.

My bewildered mom and dad could not be so bewildered how their 14 yield son could be in Jamaica seen the grateful Dead and not even in high school? And then sent me $1,000 thank you Mom and Dad and all my friends and Jerry and everybody for the great time I got the worst sunburn at that show ever had

If bombastic organ is your thing, Brent is your guy no doubt. Little too much for me. Prefer Pig's organ play and Keith's piano myself. To each his own. Dead keyboard players are like pizza, they're all pretty good even when they're bad

I never even knew they played this show/for me 82 was around the start of the last musical peak for the band. Fortunately the peak lasted several years/had its own highs and spin outs of course,. Just glad I got to see the guys quite a few times during the early anbd mid 80s. Nice discovery this show/will finish listening after work/getting a bit to nastalgic for this babilonian morning...smiles will certainly be less legal before this daze is over...

Seems like just yesterday I was dancing to Fire on the Mountain on the beach in Montego Bay, Jamaica back in the early 80's at sunrise! That was definitely one of the most magical moments of my life being at the World Music Festival seeing a bunch of great bands like the Grateful Dead, Bobby and the Midnites, Beach boys, Gladys Knight, Aretha, Toots and the Maytals, Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers as kids with their mom Rita Marley, Black Uhuru, Clash, English Beat, Jimmy Cliff, B-52s, Yellowman, and many more! I was lucky to get a musician pass from Skeeter Davis, who was also playing, who was a famous country singer in Jamaica and the U.S. She was so very kind to me! The first night's lineup according to another person in the comments below was The Wailers with the I Threes, Toots and The Maytals, The B-52's, Gladys Night and The Pips, Jimmy Cliff, The Grateful Dead. The Dead played from about 4:30am to 7am! So one night I rode in the shuttle bus for the musicians and friends from the musicians' hotel to the outdoor venue in Montego Bay with Toots, Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight and their bands! That was a real hoot! Anyway, just thought I would share that magical moment. That magical blue backstage wrist band also got me backstage where the Dead and other bands were hanging out on a comfortable house boat on the water's edge that was set up by the promoter for folks to hang out on and relax and party together. I was in high heaven! One of the many bizarre things that happened at this show that made it really unusual was the power went off during the drum jam. I thought that would be the end of the show, as without power, they couldn't continue. The drums were loud enough on their own for the small group of a few hundred Deadheads that managed to make the trip there and to stay up all night long for the Dead's two sets to be able to hear, but I was sure that the set would just end after the drums since there was no power to power the P.A. and amps. But according to Dan Healy, the sound board master extraordinaire, "Some bozo forgot to put kerosene in the power generator"!!! So backstage a frantic effort was made to find the reason for the power outage and just in time for the space jam, the power magically went back on, in time for a killer Good Lovin and other songs I can't remember right now...

The bass on Women Are Smarter - holy hell. Actually, the whole thing is fantastic - beat going every which where, nobody's in charge, and never any doubt where you are or how you got there or where you're going next. That's the thing that always kept me coming back.

Good point, John Khan was the same way. I think it was Jerry's request, hence why Phil went on his own, instead of playing that 1-2 beat that Bobby and John do with the new Dead.

I was there...three days of jerked goat, Red Stripe, great beaches, and some incredible music! The Dead came on around 1 or 3 in the morning, I think after the B52s or the Beach Boys...it was a while ago... Crazy first night.. Rita and the kids were there because it was the inauguration of the Bob Marley Memorial Stadium. The Prime Minister was there, too, with lots of army personnel...kinda weird , because I was high as a kite... Great three days of some INCREDIBLE music!!

Had a cassette of this show for years (the correct date may be 11-26-1982 they played so late, the Dead came on at four-thirty am playing until 7 am) which was transferred from a DAT of the show. Always loved the high end of the symbols at the beginning of Sugaree and Brent's Hammond B3 high in the mix along with Phil's bass. Listen to Jerry's guitar at 7:51 such a great sound, and check out Althea ... in my opinion one of the best they played ... Love the mix on this show!! The Clash also played before the Dead and in an effort to get the crowd going Joe Strummer threaten to stop playing or he'd bring out the Grateful Dead to play.

hi, I mixed and digitally mastered this and all the other soundboard recordings of this three day festival. the time you recall was correct. I would agree this was not the dead at there best. we had run out of drugs (the whole band and crew) Yup no coke or dope for a good 36 hours......all kinds of ganja.. so the psychic energy was ....well unique for the 80's not my best mix either Anyhow there was no such thing as a DAT at this point in history. I mastered it on a Sony PCM f1 stored the digital code on the video portion of a betmax tape. there were some gems as mentioned. Althea and for sure the killer stand alone Fire. remember the US fest? another early morning fiasco "snuggle down and spread its time for breakfast in bed with the grateful dead" Good times Digital Dave

I keep reading how this show sucked blah blah blah. I’m midway thru first set and the guys sound GRATE! To each their own I suppose. I saw enough shows and have 100s of hours of tapes to know a good from a grate from a not so great show. This baby is fine by me. Wish I’d have been there. However, ex wife and I were in Montego Bay for our honeymoon in June 85. Planning accordingly, we rose early on the 30th, watched the sunrise in the beach, flew out around 11, landed in Baltimore, and were dancing to the Dead at Merriweather that evening. Waking in Jamaica and seeing that amazing Shakedown in Maryland on the same day was epic. 2 more shows and honeymoon was over. 3 more months tho and fall tour was on!
