I have viewed quite a substantial number of alternative math-aid video materials, and have to admit that you are truly a teacher from God. Clear, laconic (yet plenty of material covered), committed to full coverage of various topics and quite humorous (which has been proven to aid memory retention....and makes math that much more fun). Thank you!!!

I so appreciate the instruction. This is very clarifying and beats the crappy WileyPlus program that is insufficient and has very few instructive videos. I have to thank you profusely as my life is bettered because of your time.

Professor RobBob ,this is an absolute awesome video/lecture on Graphing Absolute Value Functions with Transformations. Graphing functions using Transformations was not one of my strong points in Algebra, but from analyzing the methods involved, this is not difficult to understand.
I am honored to be your 2 to the 9th power like as you approach 50K views! Great stuff. Clear discussion. Smooth transitions. Even the detail of clarifying the shape did not actually represent a function.
the equation you have on the board at the start of the video is all i need for my notes. thanks!!!

how would I find the x and y intercepts of f(x)= -|x-3|+2 ?
looking for bibliography on algebra word problems. Any suggestions. ??
Can you explain the difference when transforming a graph from y=f(x) to y=|f(x)| function. I'm very confusing on how to graph them.
amazing best teacher!

My professor requires us to apply the transformations to a given point, (ex: you're given (0,0) and your equation is: y= -|-2/3(x-3)|+4 ). I understand that you would add 3 to the x coord since you're shifting to the right 3 units and add 4 to the y-coord since you're going up 4 units, but for reflections, stretches, and compressions, I'm not sure what to do. Especially when it's a fraction, and is there a certain order that you must apply these transformations, or does it not matter? I love your sound effects btw.
I have to say you're awesome!!!!

just wondering if you can recommend some bibliography on this topic. How do we go from equations of of a line Y=mx+b, or point slope, or standard form to transformations? what are the values a, b, c, and d in that equation coming from. I notice the equation y= a. b(x-c) +d has four variables. Are they derived from y=x? Before I really understand how to use it, i want to understand a, b,c, and d values where do they stem from?

Every graph has a Parent Function... lines, absolute values, parabolas, sine functions etc. The transformations I discuss in this video repeat in all of these types of graphs and work the same. Seeing the four transformations in a linear function is a bit hard to see at times. Yes there is m and b changing slope and y intercept. For more complicated graphs like parabolas you get those equations into Standard Form using Completing the Square. You will see Transformation concepts repeated over and over. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dZelk8OKdKbMhqg.html and kzread.info/dash/bejne/dWme0MOscpXeZbw.html and kzread.info/dash/bejne/q4Zr25qhqbLWdLg.html and kzread.info/dash/bejne/q4Zr25qhqbLWdLg.html etc.

I actually think i figured it out. All are x and y values!!! of course! on the grid all are x and y.... now Y= +/- a [+/-b (x-c)] +d, a, b, c, and d are all x and y values modifying "transforming" the initial equation y= mx+b. I would like to show you something but i would like to chat with you via e-mail. I wrote you one already last week where I said ratios and rates of changes are CRUCIAL. let me know....

"ProfRobBob", thank you for a great presentation. I was reviewing my son's home work and had forgotten how these are done. I thought, it's easy, just take the function out of the absolute value and graph for both the (+) and (-) cases; but, that didn't work. Why? Anyway, from reviewing his math book, I understood most of the translations, except for when the coefficient of "X" is other than "1". But, thanks to you, now I got that too. Can anyone comment and let me know why we can't graph these using the (+) and (-) cases of evaluating an absolute value? Thanks.

@@profrobbob I just got back from vacation earlier this month, but took a pretty bad fall during my vacation. Still, I am planning on captioning more of your videos as soon as my doctor releases me to sit up for more extended periods. I broke 3 vertebrae in my lower back in the fall, but only bruised the spinal cord, so I am restricted to lying down for a month (which started on July 2, 2022.) BTW, there was no damage done to the actual spinal cord. I will work on finishing up the captioning of the ones I have not been finished as soon as I am cleared to sit up again

Graph y=|x| and y=|x-3| on the same coordinate system, pick some x values identify the y's from the two graphs, subtract and plot new point. Repeat as many times as needed to see the picture of |x|-|x-3| develop.

What about a function f(x) = |x-2|-x?
@profrobbob
8 жыл бұрын
To graph by hand make separate graphs for y=|x-2| and y=x on the same x y axis. For selected x values take the y from y=|x-2| and y=x, subtract them, and plot the new y for these selected x values. Connect the dots and there is your graph:)

How do you graph y=3|x|
@profrobbob
8 жыл бұрын
+Mr FreshBest Your graph has a vertical stretch multiple of three. So take y=|x| and move all the points 3 times as far from the x axis. What was point (2,2) will now be (2,6) for example.

So....Maybe this is a silly question...but are Absolute value functions actually...linear? I mean I know it's technically two straight lines... but the shape is a V...which technically isn't a line...
You should've had an example where A is 0
