Graphene hype starts to become reality

Graphene is a two-dimensional form of carbon, with a hexagonal structure just one atom thick. Until now there has been a lot of hype about potential mind-blowing technologies but not a lot of end product. The FT's Andy Bounds reports

    Its all toys and better tools to advertise more toys. None of those are solving energy issues or actually propel us into more advanced modes of life. Its just reenforcement of our old ways of living with flashier screens, rampant consumption and meaningless gadgets. The last invention that actually changed our way of living was Internet. I don't say that incremental improvements on previous inventions are not desirable, but those are unfortunately just improvements in sales and marketing, not something that would actually make a huge difference in our way of living. Let's take 3D printing - grate for prototyping, but there is no way it will replace the industrial production on the big scale. Mobile devices - I say yes. But why with every incremental improvement to your new Iphone it runs worse then the previous models because of bloateware and forced adds design of software; and instead of helping you at work it makes us less effective because of the addiction to social media. Also in terms of hardware the Moore's law is not working anymore. 10 cores on your processor is not necessary faster because of architecture constraints of your computer, and the clock speed of the CPU is what really matters in most computing tasks. That depends on how small the circuit can get, and we have already reached it's limits. Drones are mostly platforms for usless vloggers to mount their expensive cameras and show off to the world in order to get money from marketing companies that want to sell you more shitty toys. The inventions I am interested in are: Large scale, cost effective carbon fiber composits production, Solid state batteries that cost less than 100 dollars per kWh Fusion technology - like Tokamacs - that actually gets more energy output than requires input, Transportation revolution both in terms of clean vehicles and congestion solution AI that is actually a true AI not some neuronetwork software that gathers your personal information to bombard you with aggressive advertisement

  • @urmok6iv

    @urmok6iv

    5 жыл бұрын

    That's an interesting way of thinking. (Reminds me of my high-school teachers who thought that only their class is important). Small incremental improvements are also important and I wouldn't say that 3D printing is a small improvement - it's impact on R&D speed and cost is undeniable. Sure it doesn't resolve all our problems directly but new and better tools may play a key role in the future. All innovation is welcome. Anyway. I totally get the point that most human beings are just wasting resources on silly stuff like making prank videos, singing or smoking cigarettes - none of which directly helps us to develop new tech (though all those may help to relieve stress even if you're an engineer). Hmm. The more I think about it the more it looks like our biggest problems are connected to our social behavior and way of living. If we could get more people involved in science and tech, we could REALLY accelerate innovation. But that's utopia. Part of being born as a human is the freedom to pursue personal happiness and for most people it wouldn't involve getting an engineering degree.

    Shoes with graphene infused soles - that should have been the title of the video. It would have been true and just that slight change of angle would have made it more exciting. Same content would have been viewed positive instead of the failed expectations comments. You would think Bloomberg writers know better how not to make clickbait titles that let you down.
