GRAPEFUL! OUR FIRST HARVEST ON OUR HOMESTEAD / FARM / RURAL PROPERTY IN HOT & SUNNY PORTUGAL

When we were told there weren't any grape vines on the land, we were a little gutted but thought it was something we could add. Thankfully as we started turning our little property into a homestead/farm, we cleared some of the land and gave some areas some attention, we found vines! We were very excited to do our first grape harvest, hopefully, the first of many :) We've also been harvesting some other things on the land, find out what we've got growing!
Hi there :) We're Marc & Allys, a couple of left the UK in 2021 to search of somewhere we could build a homestead and connect with nature. This led us to the beautiful Alentejo region in Portugal. Self-sufficiency is important to us, whilst we're not off grid, we're keen to rely less and less on external systems.
Follow us on our journey as we face new challenges, and acquire new skills!

    If you want to preserve some grape juice for long term storage, over the winter, get a steam juicer. I use to help my mom make grape juice every year this way. The juice will be very concentrated and you can add water, or sparkling water to thin it out a bit when opening to drink. You can also juice wine grapes this way until you have enough to make wine with. Just because they are wine grapes doesn’t mean they can’t be used for juice. Also the reason your fresh pressed juice has a bitter flavor is because of the skins and seeds. Though that’s not a bad thing. Try freezing some of those figs to use in the winter. Cut in half or quarters place on baking sheet put in freezer after couple hours take them and place in container or freezer bag press out air and place back in freezer. You can then remove as much or as little as needed.

    Thanks so much Paulette! Really appreciate it. Haven't heard of a steam juicer, i'm going to look in to it but a concentrate sounds good as it takes up less room :) Freezing sounds good, we have a little chest freezer in the garage so a bit of extra room :)

    Mark, with your dry summers you can sun dry your figs... make up frames with some feet ( for airflow underneath, on the frame (rack) put fly screen taut on it ( staples) slice your fruit, same as in your electric dehydrator... plonk them on the side of the roof that gets mostly sun all day... bugs won't touch them because of the radiant heat of the roof... bring them in late arvo, and put out again the next day if they weren't dry the first day. It's the traditional way of drying soft fruits, veg, etc... on your terracotta tiles, on your roof.

  • @leeoregan9766

    @leeoregan9766

    10 ай бұрын

    how high to cut your timber for the feet? at most two/two and half inches- 5-6.5 cm... you want the maximum heat radiating off the roof circulating. I dry figs, tomatoes, eating grapes- i put a bit of a height variation on the legs for small fruits- short at the back, longer at the front, so the rack is almost level when on the slope of the roof. i also do apples, pears, thin sliced citrus, pineapple- i don't worry about oxidation ( browning) of the drying fruit, but if you do, a dip in citric acid and water, or lemon juice as you fill the racks helps keep it's colour. Dry your excess eating grapes to make sultanas... 😉

    Chillies, peppers, corn kernels, onions, any excess really that i want to save space for in jars, after jams, preserves, or bottled for the year... when loaded up with abundance you want to put back your excess... 🌻

    Hi Marc and Allys 😃 Another great video! Those grapes look amazing, I would say that it is still early to harvest them, usually people harvest them around mid September 😃 but if they were tasty that's the most important thing 😃 the first variety of grapes I would say that it is "uvas de mesa" a bit more edible and not to make wine from them, the black grapes are definitely to make wine but I am not sure about the type of variety (as there are so many varieties in Portugal) 😅 all the rest of the fruits that you've shown are looking great as well, that type of apples it's my favourite one and the watermelons look promising 😃 Already waiting for the next video! Abraço 😃

Hope we have good melons :)

    @@rootsdownhomestead well, if the locals were doing it they surely know better than anyone else 😃 Probably they want to avoid the rainy days as it damages the grapes. I can only imagine the wasps around the grapes 😅 in regards the melons if the weather keeps as it is I think that will be a good year 😃

It has taken a couple of weeks binge watching but I have now watched every video and caught up. Something I like to do if I find a new channel I like the first video I watch is too go back as far as I can and watch thrm all. For me it is a way to get to know you better. Loved the videos and love what you have done so far. (I was gutted for you when the floods occurred 😢).
