    For maximum granulation and color separation, I recommend rough press paper and painting with salt water. Just add a lot of salt to warm water, dissolve the salt, let it cool, and then paint with it. This works with cold press too. You can get even non-granulating paints to do marvelous things with salt water.

    I'm a very inexperienced beginner and just purchased a small set of what I considered expensive watercolors. My first time playing with them I had a lot of granulation, which was disappointing because I thought there was something wrong with them. Your video helped me to understand that my new paints are not defective, but actually have a characteristic unique to watercolor that I didn't even know existed. Now I'm even more excited about them! Thank you for your video! 💜

    I had the opposite exp! I tossed a bunch of cheap tubes bc I thought the granulation was a result of that. Its helpful to know. But I admit- I don't like it all! For abstract work- okay cool. But I don't want my landscapes doing that. The sky doesn't do that! Blooms are cool though.

    Some paints do that and some don't. If you get a good brand they'll be colors in the mix that don't granulate at all and some that do. And some colors just by Nature have a tendency to granulate regardless of the brand. Like if I recall correctly ultramarine is generally pretty granulating and hansa Yellow rarely is

  • @ChoochooseU
    @ChoochooseU2 ай бұрын

    Just to add to the conversation, common granulating colors are ultramarine blue, Earth colors like burnt sienna, yellow ochre and burnt umber. So if you cannot invest in specific specialty paints atm, you can experience a lot of fun with these. Also, paynes grey and sepia are fairly active and fun. Also I believe PBK11 black is magnetic and moves a lot and interestingly can be added in tiny amounts to pinks, purples and greens to create the popular “dusk” colors some manufacturers are selling lately.

    I enjoyed the HECK outta this video. So glad I clicked on it. For many years I've been using acrylics almost exclusively, but in my youth, I used watercolors. And in art school I took several watercolor classes. But there wasn't any talk of granulation that I remember. I know about it, but this video knocks it outta the park!! Daniel Smith and Schmincke are both just great brands to use. I hope to get back into watercolors more, especially after watching your awesome video.

    This is a superb video that really gets to the juicy aspect of granulating paints. Thank you, I'll be doing some experimenting with these techniques. I have several Daniel Smith granulating paints and I recently bought 5 half-pans of the new Schmincke supergranulation paints. So I've got plenty to play with 😄 What do you think of using granulation medium to get similar affects with non-granulating paints or enhancing paints that already have granulation?

    Curious to know how the experimentation went for you Mark. I do own granulation medium but haven't found it to give me the effects I desire. I still need to find the time to experiment further with it since I find it hard to believe the effect I've gotten is the only possible one. Hoping to find time soon.

    @@myfantasticalimaginarium1890 Thank you very much! I`ve seen that brush online and it`s much more affordable than series 7. Yours looks great to me, I love the point, by the look of the ferrule it looks well used to me, but I can`t really know that. I lost the point on my DaVinci Harbin, and I took care of that brush.. I wonder do you use it longer now and how do you like it? If you find the time to answer, that would be great)) In any case, thank you ))

    Sorry for the late reply, I couldn't find your reply anymore after I read it :( The ferrule does look well used but I haven't had it for years. I've had this brush for about six months and I really like it. It holds a lot of water but still comes to a very fine point for details. So Yeah, I'd recommend it but I cant be sure there isn't a cheaper alternative that would also suit your needs in the short term (6 months). I would expect this to hold up a lot better for longer comparing to cheaper alternatives. We will have to see how it holds up in the future. I do also recommend this brush in my 'watercolorists wishlist 2021' that I made for the holidays. It will be up later today.

    Ok before watching this video I have to say I don’t get granulation! To me it is a flaw in the paint pigment, and not what I come to watercolor for! I don’t get why it’s a fad right now, and being a mostly nature-oriented artist I can’t think of too many uses for it: I want my water smooth and transparent, and my skies and my clouds too. Maybe in a rugged wild field or grassland I could see using it but not the entire picture. It’s like in a drink where all the impurities settle to the bottom of the glass--yuck, I don’t want to see that! Ok now I’ll watch your video.

  • @myfantasticalimaginarium1890

    Hey Nancy, do you mean you would like to get a granulating version of a yellow, red and a blue? For the granulating blue a French Ultramarine would be a good pick. True yellow and reds don't often come in granulating forms so you would have to look into a more earthy red like Potters Pink. The closest thing I've seen to a granulating yellow would be the Tundra Orange by Schmincke. I hope I understood your question correctly, if I didn't please let me know so I can give you the answer you're looking for.
