Grant Them Eternal Rest

Dedicated to those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. The five movements, Introit, Kyrie, Dies Irae, Sanctus and Angus Dei, outline the general form of a Requiem Mass. Boysen transforms the first seven notes of the somber Gregorian Chant melody, the "Dies Irae," throughout the piece. The chant makes a full and frightening appearance at the end of the third movement, only to be disguised in the fourth movement by the enchanted sounds of the mallet percussion. Grant Them Eternal Rest is a monumental addisiton to the canon of wind literature.

When my high school band played this, we had someone in the tech booth dim the lights as we stood up when it was our turn to sing out. We kept singing and humming into the darkness.

My school's wind ensemble is playing this for the 15th anniversary of 9/11. It is a truly wonderful piece. I'm humbled to have the opportunity to play this piece next month in front of an audience.

I'm not really a fan of the third music, but I see what he's trying to get at. The first movement is absolutely gorgeous!
