When you consider her great fortune as a performer to have offers of lucrative work her entire life, her end really isn't tragic. Sad that she was only 70, but she worked right up to the end and mercifully didn't suffer long from any debilitating disease. And she left quite a legacy of performances. She's a good example of the idea that luck favors those who work hard. Rest in peace Ms. Ryan. ✝️🙏

Paul Henning originally wrote the Granny Moses character for Bea Benadaret. They were married or soon to be married, can’t recall the timeline. However, Irene Ryan came in to audition. She did her own hair and make-up and during her test she ranted and raved like she eventually did in the show. Henning decided to cast Ryan and showed the audition tape to Benadaret. And she agreed that Ryan’s portrayal was better than hers. Henning still wanted his squeeze to be in his show. That’s why she allowed herself to be recast as Jethro’s mother.

The Beverly Hillbillies... I was born in 1959 and was just a young-un when that show was a playin’ on the television. Absolutely and unquestionably was my all-time favorite TV show -and still is! I can be down and out having a really bad day and all I’ve got to do to have a complete mood turnaround is watch an episode of TBHs and hear the beloved voices of the beloved Clampett/Bodine family and it feels like sunshine again! Jed described the feeling best when I once heard him say: “We’re all just as happy as gophers in soft dirt!”. And oh, how I miss hearing Granny’s voice callin’ the boys: “JED!!” ... “JETHRO!!”... or making the announcement that she’s got “vittles a cookin’ and they’ll be ready for eatin’ directly!” We were all blessed to be a part of that family back in the ‘60s, partaking of the “heapin’ helpin’ of their hospitality”. I miss ‘em.

@@SOULRELIEF22 Yes, the Bodine’s and Clampett’s were pot pissers. They didn’t have indoor plumbing back in the rural hills surrounding Bugtussle and got use to using the bedside pot at night. Knowing their simple natures as we do after spending so much time with them thru the 60’s, I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that they brought the ol’ brass piss-pots with them to Beverly Hills and continued using them even though they had that city luxury of indoor plumbing. It’s a lot easier to just hop out of bed and use that bedside piss-pot when the urge wakes you up at night rather than making the trip all the way over yonder to the bathroom! I reckon Jethro had to have a couple of those pots by his bed bein’s how he was such a big strapping large and active feller and always et so much. I didn't know what year The Beverly Hillbillies officially stopped running, or when they quit making new seasons. We watched the re-runs through out most of my childhood. I still give it one of the top 10 sitcoms made, and have watched all of the newer 1 hour movies that were remakes of The Beverly Hillbillies. Some of the stations that air older sitcoms should consider re-broadcasting it, as it was a really well written show. It did make a mockery of the south, but underneath that part, one can always see that the southerners true innocence, honesty, and loving Christian ways shine through, no matter how unsophisticated they painted the southerners to be. I would also add, that many people never get the success that they have worked so hard for, until they are much older. Always better late than never, and glad that God moved for her in her later years... It was a part truly made for her.
