Grandsire Caters at Appleton, Oxon
Appleton in ringing terms is best known for the bell hanging firm of White's, situated in the village. The church of St Laurence contains a light ring of 10, crammed tight into the small tower; it is a fair squeeze, so much so that the entrance to the ringing room is up a small ladder through the centre of the floor! The bells are a hotchpotch of 1800's Mears, (6 recast in 1977,) and go and sound as such! However, many notable peals, many of them long lengths, have been rung here.
We rattled them round fast as they went and sounded better like that, and, once we got used to the speed, had some nice ringing. Footage shows opening rounds, excerpt from a quarter peal of Grandsire Caters, and some of the lower on the back 8

very light 10 =D and a very small ringing chamber!
Am I right in thinking that the treble's rope is so near the wall it can only be rung side on - and hence with your back to the tenor? wow, what a challenge!

There is room (just!) to ring it facing inwards as normal, but it looks like Rob found it easier doing it that way! Certainly very tight up there!
You live and learn- I always thought these were cast by that celebrated London founder, S Hite.

The camera is moving. Is that tower movement?

Mmm, I wouldn't go as far as great bells, I would say they were fairly dismal, but OK if moved along! Proper stuff is Grandsire Caters :-)
How the hell can you fit 10 in that tower!

Ringer Jason Well, they managed it! It's a bit tight inside but overall not too bad, yes a light 10 but not the lightest!

The bells are hung on two levels. The sound lantern was added on to the top in order to make space for the extra bells.
