    The problem with GM-level play is, that some concepts can only really be explained by another GM. If the commentators don't understand the moves, how should they do more, that telling what the engine tells them?

    3:44 I don't understand, this underpromotion just postponed the mate but didn't stop it right? As long as white avoid check he'll put black in zugzwang then checkmate with Nc2#. Levon still had time why did he just freeze?

    look at the time buddy - he froze because he didnt expect the underpromotion and expected a queen promotion in which case he would just checkmate, but since he promoted to knight he was in check and couldnt make a move in 1 second

    At 3:45 the computer said it's a draw by insufficient material, but it's not insufficient material, black mate is possible, should have been black win.

    If by “black mate” you meant that it's possible to checkmate then you are correct. But it seems that you didn't read the line completely. It is written "Draw by timeout and insufficient material". What happened is white ran out of time. Normally white should lose because they ran out of time but there is this special rule. According to this rule, if one side has the sufficient material to checkmate while the other side does not have sufficient material to checkmate, and the side with the sufficient material runs out of time, then the games ends in a draw. It happens because one side had sufficient material to checkmate but ran out of time, while the other side did not have sufficient material to checkmate. Hope that helps

    @@dalydas7037 My point is that in this position both sides had sufficient material to checkmate. White ran out of time, it is still possible for black to checkmate the white king with the knight, so black should have been declared the winner.

  • @AdamGaffney96

    @@tomekczajka The only way black can checkmate with just K and N is if white actively tries to get checkmated, as whites king needs to be forced into the corner plus block his kings only escape square with one of his own pieces. It's only considered sufficient checkmating material if black has enough material to checkmate against a lone king. However that's not possible as with best play you can't checkmate with only a knight and king.

  • @tomekczajka

    @tomekczajka

    3 күн бұрын

    @@AdamGaffney96 The rules don't say "it's a win if you can force checkmate against the best play". What they say is that if the opponent runs out of time, it's a win if there is any legal sequence of moves that leads to a checkmate. With your version of the rules white running out of time on move 1 of the game would probably be a draw because there is probably no forced checkmate for black in the starting position.

  • @AdamGaffney96

    @AdamGaffney96

    @@tomekczajka Sorry you might have seen my original comment, I misspoke and edited it. It's specifically if any sequence could win against a lone king. I think there has to be a certain cut-off where they assume you're not going to just checkmate yourself. Then there's the extra question of even in this hypothetical scenario where you do want to checkmate yourself against your opponents knight, you'd still have to do it within the 50 move rule. I don't think anyone would argue that black could seriously checkmate white here even assuming poor play. It'd have to be the worst play of all time.
