Usually when a game is riddled with problems, its not from a lack of effort in QA, but a lack of anyone listening to QA blaring alarms and yelling "Fix this shit!" That's the thing about QA, they don't get to fix the problems, they just get to report them. When problems go unsolved people are so eager to shoot the messenger.

Yeah reading the credits for the games, they had at least 3 different QA departments hack away at these things. Grove Street Game's in-house team, Rockstar's team, and a 3rd party group called "Pole to Win". And what we're seeing is what was left after all of that!

  • @LordArikado

The AAA industry doesn't just have a problem with scapegoating and ignoring their QA department, it's also this mentality of "Eh, we'll just patch it later" that the gaming community keeps allowing them to get away with when their games launch in an objectively broken state. It's gotten to the point where the paying customers are now bugtesting games for free so these giant corporations can save a few dollars on fixing problems before launch.

One time when San Andreas was still fairly recent I was at a schoolmate's house taking turns playing it. Mostly we'd all just go on random rampages or try some stupid stunt, stuff that ensured that each persons turn with the controller was very short and action packed. That is until one of our friends decided that was boring so he instead went to every fast food restaurant he could find on the map, ate until just before he would puke, and binged his way through every place until he had maxed out the fat "skill". Then he started (very slowly) running until he lost that weight. Today that friend holds a masters degree in philosophy and is an expert on the works of Jung. Most memorable

San Andreas took ungodly amounts of my life away, and I consider it a great game, but Yahtzee is right about some of those awkward mechanics. -Taking over territory is important, until it isn't, and then it is again at the end of the game. -The RPG stats mechanic didn't affect much so you could ignore it, but then they locked off missions because your stat wasn't high enough so you couldn't ignore it. -The controls for the RC missions made you want to stab yourself, and screw that one stunt flying mission. -They did my man Ryder so dirty in the story. Okay that last one isn't a mechanic, but he deserved better.

Regarding Ryder and the story. SA has some of the weirdest and inconsistent stories to date in a GTA game. You go to being a man trying to fight for your gang and street loyalty to being a garage owner trying to make a living whilst also trying to take down a crime syndicate to being a casino owner being supported by the Triads trying to take out the Italian mafia in the area to being a government agent doing various missions you'd usually let the military or the elite take care of to inflitrating Area 51 of all things and finally to then become a talent manager supporting a talented rapper whilst also going back to becoming a gangster because you got guilt tripped by your brother. Honestly, you can't tell me that's a good story on paper and in practice when you think about it.

With the middle part of San Andres being an example of this. It severely affected GTAV where the game focuses on Franklin trying to be legitimate and not fall back into crime, and then it focuses on Michael for most of the story, Trevor shows up to weird Michael out for a bit while just hanging around the city, You then flee to the desert for a while until that is no longer a issue, and then at the end Franklin the story switches back to Franklin having to decide the ending, despite the fact that he has not been a driving force in the story since the third mission.

One of the things I was excited for was perhaps a better "ai" that matched what is available in GTA 5. It would have been cool to see a step up in how the world actually "reacts" to the player. I have memories of locking down a 4 lane intersection in Vice City back on my PS2, lining up the cars and blowing them up so no other npc's would pass. I loved watching the traffic build up until the destroyed cars despawned. Now in GTA 5? The npc will get frustrated and ride up on the sidewalk. Ooooh

People act like that’s such a tall order but the RAGE engine is only like 4 years newer and is 14 years old at this point. Not exactly ridiculously cutting edge today, but certainly better than the popsicle sticks SA’s engine is held together with. Either do it this way or don’t do it at all

The Saints Row series, or at least 1-2(and sorta 3), carried on San Andreas' legacy of still keeping around cheat codes as a fun way to screw around when you got bored. I think achievements helped kill this, but SR specifically included a note that you could do whatever but you shouldn't expect to get clout for it. There was a code for making drivers prioritize crashing into you. There was a code for starting riots. There was a code for giving you punches that could send targets into low orbit. And naturally, there were 'unlock all guns' codes. It was a relic of a simpler time. It was a weird mix of 'Git gud, scrub' (SA driving school, holy hell) and 'Yeah, man, go nuts!' while not letting the latter trivialize the former. Hell, there was even a threshold for cheats back in SA. Anything above a certain point, and it soft-locked your ability to progress in the story.

The shootouts in the 3D era games weren't about cover, they were very much run and gun. Back then, taking cover really just meant running away from the enemies and around a corner, then shotgunning them in the face as they came around the building one by one! Have to admit late game gang wars are pretty tricky though, found the best strat for those was to just fire at long range with the AK/M4 (or mini gun, if you have it), then run away when ever the enemies got close enough to start shooting at you. Doing all the paramedic missions for 150% max health and vigilante missions for 150% max armor is helpful too.
