I miss living on this base. I grew up in the Air Force. My father was a boom operator. He spent 22 years in. We live everywhere from Loring, Fairchild, Castle, to Grand Forks AFB in my life. Grand Forks is where I have my best childhood memories.

I was stationed there from 78 to 81, and loved it, I didn't want to leave, the people are nice and friendly. Yes the winters are harsh, but I still had a great time. Being from Florida, if I can survive the winters in Grand Forks, anyone can

Randall I was station there from May of 1974 to October 1975 & to be honest with I wouldn't have change it for the world. Also being from Florida like you said & it's well put if I can survive a winter there in Grand Forks anyone can. I will say this there's a lot of things there that wouldn't there when I was there so it really did change in 45 years.

My ex and I were stationed there from ‘71 to ‘75. It was hell. The best day was finally driving away and never looking back.

Really? It's my 5th month here. I love it. Quiet base, slow pace, lots of time to work on myself.

Was there 84-92. There were some challenges but how good of a tour you had was highly dependent upon your own outlook. After a year or so I got used to the weather - both good and bad - and if the local economy had been a bit more robust when I got out I would have stayed in the area. The Dakotas are not everyone's cup of tea but I loved it there. It's weird to see that the buildings I worked in, and the house I lived across from the main gate are all gone. My shop and my coworkers were fantastic lads - from an NCOs perspective many of the officers in both the Missile and Bomb wings left a great deal to be desired. (Note - its called Leadership, not management). There were also some outstanding officers so it wasn't a total loss. I personally had a great time there and sometimes I miss it a great deal. To any of my AFCC homies - BISS Mafia 4 Life!

I was stationed there from 93 - 2004. It was not that bad. I was there when it was a large base with missiles, boomers, and refuelers. There were two Wings when I first arrived. It changed alot when I was there, but all in all it was not too bad. Cold winters and lots of mosquitoes in the summer lol lol.

Agree. I was TDY a few time from Malmstrom AFB for Wing 6 missile maintenance augmentation and snow control in the 1970's. We joke about it but the people were nice and going to Winnepeg is an absolute trip if. Now the jokes What is the North Dakota state bird? The Mosquito What is the North Dakota state tree? The telephone pole. Bumper sticker: Ski North Dakota ____________________________________________

We lived on Cedar Ave in the mid sixties. Coldest place I've ever lived. The snow would drift up against the garage high enough that we kids could climb on top of the garage roof. Me and another kid built an igloo in the front yard and the air police came by and made us chop it up.

I attended Valley jr high 9th grade 1974-75. It was an enjoyable experience in my young childhood & early teen life.

I lived on base in housing. I got there just before the Reapers then the Global Hawks showed up. - It’s a great assignment if your married or an outdoors person. Yes you’ll need a vehicle while you’re there.

When I got my orders to report to GFAFB, (1973) I thought what bet did I lose to go to a place like that? What a horrible experience. One rec center had 3 pool tables that had ripped cloths and broken cushions. The other rec center had 4 bowling lanes and was always full. And now you state single airmen will live in dorms with private living space with shared kitchen and washroom. WHY???? Why can't a single airman get his own private living quarters???? Do married people have shared kitchens and washrooms? Why is a single airmen required to share any part of his living space with anyone??? Seems like you always have that "room mate" that thinks plenty of cologne is a substitute for personal hygiene. There were so many townspeople who hated "basers" and showed it everyday. And those potato processing plants made the town smell like the city sewer system had issues.
