wj probably had the 247 transfer case where as the cherokee has the 242. In a short race like this, when the tires started spinning there is a lag until the front tires engage. The cherokee is instant 4 wheel drive. Also, in a short race torque wins, horse power only comes into effect after the cars are off the line. that why the wj started catching up.
