Grand Canyon's North Rim: Point Sublime

Фильм және анимация

Not many make it to the North Rim's Point Sublime, which is only available in fair weather by four-wheel-drive vehicles. Here, the beauty of the canyon is unsurpassed, with near 360 degree view of the canyon. Take a ride with us through the gorgeous forests and meadows to the isolated and stunning Point Sublime. Incidentally ALL segments were shot at normal speed. It's just too beautiful to miss.

    I lived on the N Rim from 1982 to 1986. I remember walking out to Pt Sublime in '83. I didn't have a vehicle that could do it. So I walked. 22 miles, as I recall. However, when I got about 11 miles in a NPS ranger came upon me in his firefighter vehicle and asked me where I was going. "Pt Sublime" "can I see your permit?". Obviously I was on an overnight plus. I confessed that I didn't have a permit. After some tense moments he invited me to have a partial ride there. Wow, sure! We came to a place called milk creek where I intended to refill my canteen. As I was fixin' to refill, the ranger stops me and says, "look I have some water you can have, that doesn't look so good". And it didn't. Milk Creek had a name for a reason. He filled my canteen from his well supplied truck. So cool. Long story short, he took me to Pt Sublime and said, "look, I didn't bring you here", "yup I get it". That night I slept on the very point. The next morning I climbed down to the ruins near there, and then walked the 22 miles out. LONG walk. But so totally worth it! Many years later, oh I would guess 1992, I drove out there in my two wheel drive 1972 International Travelall. I had in-laws and several small children ages 7-12. Shoot, not advised. We broke down at the very spot in the video that was called a very nice view. And sure enough it is!! But the Travelall wouldn't start again. After a half hour of findlin' with it we thankfully got it going. (carburetor flap was stuck). With stress involved we got her going and out to the point. I plan to have my ashes spread there. (don't tell the NPS) My favorite place on Earth.

    Kevin, thanks for your input. Yes, I'm sorry my wife & I didn't spend the night out there. It is perhaps the best view of the canyon there is. As I mentioned in the video, some of the trip out there was familiar--after all those years. The major difference was that the road in in 1966 came off the main park road within sight of the entry kiosk. THAT was a major change, & I'm sorry I couldn't see that part of the road. As an aside, when I worked @ the north rim, it was like a paid vacation. I just didn't know it because I was only 17.

    My dad, mom, and I lived in Page, AZ from 1972-1978 and I remember dad taking me hunting for mule deer on the North Rim when I was in my teens. I'm 60 y.o. now (born in 1959) but I don't remember where on the North Rim he'd take us. It required a 4X4 Dodge truck, that we camped in and sometimes there was snow on the ground. I'm pretty sure it was some busted up survey road well before the Grand Canyon lodge at the end of highway 67, but I don't remember where. I do remember that it required some pretty good off roading in the four wheel drive. Dad passed away about 10 years ago now so I didn't get a chance to ask him where he took me during these hunts but I remember the adventures in my mind. Your video helped me relive some of this because that country looks just like I remember.

    Wow, that's quite a feat. Not sure I would have attempted. However, good driving does play a major part in making it through. On our return trip, we came across an abandoned Volvo 4WD wagon that didn't make it up a hill. When we got back the gas station operator said the guy's wife was hot enough to melt steel! Then they had to call a tow truck out of Jacob Lake. Glad I didn't get that bill.

    My first time there was in the mid '80's. Back then, they actually kept the road fairly well graded, though it did have some very steep hills, and it was doable with a standard car (though I actually drove it in an old Scout II). I was last there in October 2019, in a stock 4WD Nissan Frontier (their smaller pickup), and had no trouble driving it in that, but did use 4 lo much of the way. You don't really need a lifted or modified rig to to it, but I would recommend a 4wd pickup or SUV with decent clearance. Low range is probably not absolutely necessary, but desirable. Point sublime, IMO, is by far the best place to view the Grand Canyon from either rim. You can see a large part of the canyon from there, as well as the surrounding area, including the San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff. Also an outstanding place for stargazing, with an unobstructed view of the whole sky, and very dark sky at high altitude.

    “Your way is lined with heavy growth of the Kaibab Forest,” longtime editor Raymond Carlson wrote in the September 1941 issue of Arizona Highways. “Pine trees cluster about your path, shouldering each other to get a better look at you. You come across small meadows, where a deer will look up, almost annoyed by the intrusion. Flowers carpet the forest, having a high old time in the sunlight."

    Take a deep breath and make the short but harrowing ride out to the point. “Out there,” Mr. Carlson wrote in 1941, “is a view of the Grand Canyon you’ll see from no other place but Point Sublime.” Sublime is certainly one of the words that’ll come to mind. Stunning, spectacular, sensational ... those will occur to you, too. It’s a payoff that’s worthy of the drive that takes you to it."

    I have an AWD Honda CRV. Is it possible to "stradle" the ruts by riding on the high middle section (between the ruts) and the ground outside of the ruts in the few places where it seems necessary? I don't want to be the next Volvo, but I'm pretty decent about picking a path to keep from bottoming-out.

  • @W7DSY

    I don't think that would be advisable. However, road conditions change year-to-year, week-to-week, so I would inquire locally when you are ready to make the trip. I am not very familiar w/the CRV, but my first thought is that is it would take an expert driver to make it through with your vehicle.

  • @W7DSY

    @W7DSY

    4 жыл бұрын

    I don't think it's open yet, and later, it will depend upon snowfall, etc. Best bet is to go mid-to-late summer, when everything has dried out. No problem w/4x4, the rest wd depend on the camper--smaller the better. You will have good travel most of the way exc for a few rough up/downhill segments. I would not be too afraid w/a smaller tent trailer. Travel trailer wd be a different story, account clearances in some areas. might want to leave the trailer and take your sleeping bags and a tent. Great camping @ the end of the trail, and @ least one place abt 2/3 of the way in.
