Grand Canyon Rim to Rim First Experience

I was invited to hike the Grand Canyon by a friend who has done this hike 14 times. Always nice to go with a knowledgeable expert. It was one of the highlights of my backpacking life.

I’ve hiked the Canyon 4 times. It’s the most powerful, spiritual experience I’ve ever had. I’m heading back again in September. Your video is awesome. Thanks

As I mentioned the leader of our group has done it 14 times and I always wondered why anyone would do the same hike that often. Now I know, it is an amazing experience. I was most surprised by THE BOX. The music I chose was very appropriate because it was almost a meditative experience. Hard to explain to someone who hasn't been there, but it really impacts you in a very positive way. Thanks for the encouragement.

Beautiful, felt like watching one of the clips from “Mackenna's Gold” when I was watching your video and pics from the plateau point. This is a perfect point to get great pics without any distraction. Added a lot of info, the plateau point, the falls above the ribbon falls, quite awesome. I did my trip in a day, guess it’s impossible to cover in a day. Wish I had good company like yours to take a multi day trip !! 😊 Pretty sharp photos, great planning and very well executed trip👍👏😀 Thanks for all the hidden info. 🙏

It helps to go with someone who has been there 14 times. I would have never found any of those side trips by myself. Glad you enjoyed it.

Thank you for such a great video. I've done two North to South Rim to Rim hikes taking 4 days and 3 nights. In September this year I'm doing it exactly as you did with a "zero" day at Bright Angel Campground. I appreciate seeing your side trips, I did not know about the falls above Ribbon Falls! My only deviation from your plan is to have meals pre-bought for our dinners and breakfasts while at Phantom Ranch. Yes! Hikers can reserve those meals too. It adds some community to the trip and deletes some weight from your pack, so it's a Win-Win. Great job, guys.

I never understood repeat R2R hikers until this trip, now I get it, there is a lot to experience. I know about the fantastic food at Phantom Ranch, two of our group did choose that option. Call me strange, but one of my enjoyments is making good food on the trail, I love experimenting to get the best food for the lightest weight. Didn't miss the steak dinner at all. But to each there own. Thanks for watching it was fun to make.

Wow, guys! Looks like you had a great trip. This is something I’ve wanted to do for a while. I’ve explored the Arizona strip and souther Utah quite a bit. I’ve never hiked across the canyon. Almost did it last year. I ain’t getting any younger and just need to get it done. By the way, LOVED your choice of music for your video. It was awesome. Great story telling and photography as well. Thanks for putting it up!

Thanks for the encouragement. You definitely should do this, it is well worth the effort. You may be the first to mention the music. That background in the beginning is a 60 year old piece that my mom used to play when I was a kid that is called the Grand Canyon Suite. It was specifically written for the Grand Canyon. I thought that was just too perfect.

Very nice video! You guys are obviously in good shape. Interested to know if you live at elevation, and what time of year you took this trip. I'm 72 in April and have backpacked the canyon 5 of the last 6 years. It is life changing, and can be habit-forming, lol.

Congratulations to you, keep going, that is inspiring. Most of us live at about 1000ft, so no not from elevation. But we are used to the mountains so being at lower elevation did seem to make things easier. We hiked this in September. One of our group was 70 but you have the rest of us beat. I hope to be still able to do that when I get there.

Very nice views/shots and very informative! Thank you. I am planning to run rim to rim in May. I was wondering what's the camera drone you used? I'm looking to get one for the hike.

I actually have three cameras I typically take. A Gopro, a sony ZV-1, and an Insta360 X2. It is the last one you are noticing. It removes the stick digitally so it looks like a drone shot. My hiking pole has a camera mount, so if I use it as a pole extension I can get the Insta360 X2 a long way out and get drone like footage. I have a drone but don't use it much because its pretty much banned everywhere you want to use it. A sad state of affairs in my opinion, but this is a nice work around.

Outstanding gentlemen! I enjoyed the long format, and the trip to the waterfall above Ribbon, as well as the Clear Creek Trail. You fellas are in outstanding shape. That was a lot of miles, and the majority of it in very heavy packs! I started backpacking there in 2007 and returned just about every year until my daughter and I started running R2R in 2015, mid-Aug. on our birthdays, which are 1 day apart. She was turning 16, and I'd just turned 52. We ran it 5 years in a row, and I've now run it 12 times, plus 4 Rim2Rivers (S.Kaibab to Phantom. Phantom up Bright Angel) since 2020. Heading back for another Rim2River in late May '24.

I will let you do the running, I will stick to walking. The packs aren't as heavy as they look, I think I started the hike with 20lb and took off 1lb a day in food. Thanks for your support and kind words. I look forward to doing S Kiabob next time, I hear it is fantastic.

I think the likes outweigh the dislikes on that, but I respect your taste, everyone is different. At the end of the day I make these for myself, and hope that others will like it as well, but not everyone will. Thanks for watching anyway.
