Grand Canyon Railroad - Private Cars and Diesels

This week we check out the EMD F40-PH locomotives as well as one of the private cars that belong to Philip Anschutz, owner of the Grand Canyon Railway.
In 1984, Anschutz purchased the Rio Grande Railroad. Anschutz put together a three-car private train of ex-Rio Grande cars that he restored and dressed out into three AMAZING private cars.
In 1988, the Rio Grande Railroad purchased the Southern Pacific Railroad under Anschutz. With the merger of the Southern Pacific and Union Pacific Corporation in September 1996, Anschutz became Vice-Chairman of Union Pacific, later leaving that position. In 2008 Anschutz bought Xanterra Parks and Resorts, which included the Grand Canyon Railway. He brought his private cars to the shops in Williams. We had the chance to tour one of the three cars. The other two were in use.

Here's what F40PH stands for the "F" for the full-width cowl carbody, "40" as the locomotive is part of EMD's 40-series (based on the GP40-2 freight locomotive), "P" for passenger service, and "H" for head-end power

Being that when I was a kid in the 1960’s we took both the California Zephyr and the Santa Fe Super Chief back to Chicago (from San Francisco) a couple of times I have always been more found of diesel engines. My favorites have always been the streamlined EMD F-Units and E-Units (F’s were shorted, 4 wheels per truck, E’s longer with 6 wheels). The sleek look of these engines, usually in A/B/A configuration pulling a long passenger train was the best!

When we went to the Grand Canyon, we drove from the Park back out to the town of Williams so that we could ride the train back down into the National Park. We bought tickets to get to ride in the parlor car on the back of the train, both directions. It was more fun riding down into the park than it was returning to Williams to retrieve our rental car, but it was neat to get to ride in the special car, even on the return. trip. We really enjoyed that trip!!!

Always interesting! Like you Dale I'm not too quick one the Diesels. As far as sittings on the veranda at the end of the train and sipping some brandy. 😊 Thanks again guys.

Great video of the Grand Canyon Railway. I had went to the California Central Model Railroad Club located in Santa Clara. Next I am probably going to do videoing on board VTA Light Rail again. Then go to the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad. And finally the Disneyland Monorail and Disneyland Railroad.

I'm not into diesel-electric, but the F40PH engine is one of the few diesel locomotives that I like. The other is the EMD SD40-2 diesel locomotive. I'm a traction guy who also LOVES steam locomotives. That luxurious, private observation railroad car is a really beautiful, so is it's interior.

OMG THE PRIVATE CARS! Utah and the 2 Patrick Henry cars are the reason I love private cars so much! I remember seeing all 3 on the back of the Southwest Chief many years ago and I just fell in love! That's why I bought my own car and hope to restore it to Amtrak specs!
