Had the privilege as a teenager (pop never appealed) of hearing Segovia perform live in a large concert hall. Having just heard a track of this piece played by the composer Granados on a piano (recorded on a piano roll), and being amazed by its quality and freshness, Segovia brings the piece alive in a strikingly similar way.

You bring back memories of my youth. I treated my best friend to a Segovia performance for her 16th birthday. It was a Pittsburgh Symphony concert on a VERY cold winter night. It must have been 1957, around the time of this recording. I don’t remember the program but do remember he played 5 encores, and my friend and I were enthralled.

@@cruscante I have. Much prefer Granados' own interpretation. Haven't heard anyone coming close to that on piano other than Alicia de Larrocha on piano or Segovia on guitar.

Lo que une o debería unir a todas las gentes de esta península no son las banderas o un país por el simple hecho de serlo (falso patriotismo), si no la cultura, diferente en cada zona, pero con un espíritu común, como esta trascendental pieza que a mí por ejemplo siendo y viviendo al norte del todo, en Euskadi, me siento tan identificado como un andaluz con ella, me pone los pelos de punta... Hay un alma que recorre toda esta tierra, de norte a sur, y este tema de Granados me parece que es el que mejor recoge esa sensación. Gracias.

Thats the '37 Hauser in this video. It only had 3 years to live at this time before it was destroyed in a accident. That was probably the darkest day in the history of the guitar.

Soul stirring.Maestro makes light work of this classic.You could take the great man out of Spain but not Spain out of his music even when he plays Bach.Os there a 'boom' chuck kind of strum technique also involved. This is the oldest video I have seen of Segovia playing. He was probably at his best before 1960.

Wonderful sound as always, from Segovia, he was really charismatic. However, the rhythym here is an absolute shambles. It always seemed to me he was making up as he went along. There are so many really fine players nowadays. Many inspired by Segovia, despite his liberal useage of rubato!

When I first heard Segovia play this some 40 years ago I was horrified at his broken phrasing of the opening melody. Listening again my opinion is unchanged.

I've always felt the same. Segovia never played Spanish composers as the composers wrote the phrasing. Not even the adagio movement from the "Fantasia para un gentilhombre" survived to his "interpretation" and it's more moderato than adagio and suffocating, it does not breath, like the partiture stipulates. EDIT: This comment before has, wrongly, the concierto named as "Concierto de Aranjuez", which he never played.

@@franzrogar I understood that Segovia refused to ever perform the Aranjuez, because it was dedicated to and premiered by Sainz de La Maza. Such was Segovia's ego. You may be confusing the Concierto with the Fantasia para gentilhombre dedicated to Segovia.

Soul stirring.Maestro makes light work of this classic.You could take the great man out of Spain but not Spain out of his music even when he plays Bach.Os there a 'boom' chuck kind of strum technique also involved. Fantastic player that Segovia was I prefer Alirio Diaz' interpretation of this piece every time. Diaz often referred to Segovia as "The Maestro".

Imaginate si Don Atahualpa Yupanqui fuera conocido en el mundo como le fue Segovia! Segovia siempre he tocado lo mismo. Lo de otros. Tarrega, albeniz…. Atahualpa Yupanqui ademas de excelente guitarrista, toco simpre cosas suyas. Es la grande diferencia

No tienes ni idea,Andrés Segovia además de un maestro de la guitarra fué un prolífico compositor,así que de tocar lo de otros nada de nada,infórmate antes de hacer el ridículo.

This is the oldest video I have seen of Segovia playing. He was probably at his best before 1960.

I think this video may be older. kzread.info/dash/bejne/pJ6GrtJ-j7fglA.html You can clearly see that his hair was still dark and on the whole looks younger than in the video of him playing the Granados piece here.

I maestri di vari strumenti ,compresa chitarra , hanno ritenuto che Segovia fosse il migliore esecutore ed interprete dell'epoca ed hanno mandato da lui i loro migliori allievi. Questo basta. Chiediamoci piuttosto come suonavano gli altri.
Wonderful sound as always, from Segovia, he was really charismatic. However, the rhythym here is an absolute shambles. It always seemed to me he was making up as he went along. There are so many really fine players nowadays. Many inspired by Segovia, despite his liberal useage of rubato!

When I first heard Segovia play this some 40 years ago I was horrified at his broken phrasing of the opening melody. Listening again my opinion is unchanged.

I've always felt the same. Segovia never played Spanish composers as the composers wrote the phrasing. Not even the adagio movement from the "Fantasia para un gentilhombre" survived to his "interpretation" and it's more moderato than adagio and suffocating, it does not breath, like the partiture stipulates. EDIT: This comment before has, wrongly, the concierto named as "Concierto de Aranjuez", which he never played.

@@franzrogar I understood that Segovia refused to ever perform the Aranjuez, because it was dedicated to and premiered by Sainz de La Maza. Such was Segovia's ego. You may be confusing the Concierto with the Fantasia para gentilhombre dedicated to Segovia.
