The worst of all rn is GT1, then GT3, then GT sport, then GT2, then GT6, then GT5 then GT7 and the best GT4. Why? GT1: not too much content, no multiplayer. GT3: same thing and bad rubberbanding system, can be played on emulator on PC or smartphone. GT sport: slowly dying, not much content compared to others, but an okay amount, has multiplayer. GT2: tons of content but no multiplayer. GT6: huge amount od cars and tracks, sadly way too easy licence tests, short career mode and no revieved multiplayer yet. GT5: The longest game of all GT games(needs more than 550h to beat the whole game, and around 400h to do it without B spec, lots of cars(sadly most of them are in the used car dealership, some of them appear only after day 1500, for example Formula GT) and many tracks, multiplayer works with a relatively simple mod, you can make hybrid(modded) cars. GT7: the most alive game of them as it is the newest one (multiplayer), not huge amount of content but for sure doesnt lack content, most detailed car customization(body kits and engine swaps), sadly pretty short career mode from what I heard. GT4: multiplayer, tons of cars, tons of tracks, tons of events, not the longest game of all but for sure amount of content is great, the easiest one to be set up on emulator on PC or a smartphone, long career mode.

I suspect the real reason why they tremendously scaled down the endurance races is that Gran Turismo 5 cooked a ton of PS3s and Sony was so concerned about replacing thousands of motherboards that they forced PD to do it.

And I think 24h endurance races are kinda too far to be honest, it only makes them more boring and grindier, on a real life where there are physical concerns alongside racing strategies is understandable, on a game you can pause anytime if you are feeling tired or hungry for example. I think 3h is the perfect lenght to feel like an endurance test but not being too far just for the sake of it.

@@hydro5168 but even on the PS2 it caused issues. The console itself was not designed to run on higher temps as the PS3 but even then, the red clock of death on long endurances was very common. I discovered that the issue is not caused by data corruption or high temps though, but because of a issue in the disc reader design. If you pause for a bit too long on an endurance race, the music will eventually stop and if this happens, it is certain that a red clock awaits you at the end of the race. What I think is that, if you pause for a bit then resume the endurance, the game will load entirely from RAM and if you finish it, the disc drive enters on a dormant stage and it doesnt wake up when the rest of the game needs to be loaded, so the red clock appears. If you keep the game running without stopping the music, the drive never enters into sleep and you can finish the race fine. To do this, never pause and if you need a break, use B-Spec.

  • @lordeilluminati

I remember that at launch, GT5 had this long endurances and only after some updates they added the option to save inside the race because of these complaints, since unlike GT4, you cant use B-Spec to alleviate the console and the boredom from the player.

I think the ending statement is a big part of why I found myself uninterested in GT Sport. The giant variety of cars and events in previous GT games keep things so fresh for dozens, if not hundreds of hours of playtime. Just driving high end sports cars and race cars gets tiring. Unfortunately, the PC driving sim space hasn't ever really had a game like GT either. As much as I enjoy Assetto Corsa, it just doesn't have the same career progression and variety to keep me interested for very long. Here's hoping GT7 at least has some of this magic.

I read something recently in an interview with Kazunori-san about the fan base and making the new game to reflect said fan base. He mentioned that most of the younger fans don’t understand mechanical technicalities, and car culture has changed a lot in 15-20 years. Most young people don’t know what port and polishing is, what a stroker kit is, or what a billeted crankshaft is. However why should those of us who have enjoyed this series from day dot, and helped make it grow into the franchise it is today, have to suffer for the shortcomings of others? Why not insure these younger millennials and Gen Z’ers what these things are? To maybe expand their knowledge about cars, racing and modifying, and encourage them to expand their horizons? Without feeling the need to constrain and over simplify the game? I certainly hope that GT will not be dumbed down in future releases, simplification so to cater for a lowest common denominator will never lead to a worthwhile product, nor a standout fan base which will feel attached to the “experience” of it.

Also the tracklist was unique: Willow Springs, Bathurst, Nordschleife... which weren't common tracks on the PS3 at the time. The "career mode" was boring though... + no endurance races (then why having dozens of LMP cars and GTs if their purpose isn't fulfilled?)

I disagree because 6 is a bit less online involved as 5 and Kaz since GT4 Prologue was kinda obsessed by the idea of online connectivity and turning gamers into real world drivers. GT Sport is the true realisation of this idea. Playing GT5 today is kinda bad because of the online integration. It is still possible, sure but not only the game is more grindier for the lack of Seasonal Events, some events are locked behind a "lootbox" of sorts (at the time, you could purchase and borrow cars from friends and other players to do certain events, since this functionality died, the only way to do them officially without save modding is to wait for them to appear on the Used Car Dealership and you need the experience level and money to do so, which can take CENTURIES to do). On GT6 you simply purchase the car you need to complete the event and done. I think the last time UCD was done well was in GT4 which it was not required to find cars there to do events like on 5, but you could find cheaper and exclusive cars there.

I dont feel it is that different, the issue with GT5 is that the accessibility balance is thrown out of the window. Every GT game was successful in making the game realistic enough for wheel users without at the expense of controller users (like on Project Cars). It is possible to play GT5 on a controller but many time trial events are near impossible to finish without a wheel (the most infamous at the time was the Sebastian Vettel Challenge), whereas even though GT6 feels easier, I think it teaches controller users better about driving techniques than 5 does. If you do everything right and as told on the tips of the event on 6 it gives Gold, then for an added challenge you compare your times with your friends (at the time the game shared everything on leaderboards), on 5 you will suffer getting Silver, most of the time you will only gain Bronze Medals. The only difference I feel in physics is that by default, the traction stability is stronger on 5 than on 6 but it is possible to set up. Even GT5 Prologue is better balanced than GT5.

People always fawn all over GT2 and 4 which is very understandable since they're basically the previous games but with even more content, BUT I've always loved 1 and 3 the most. There's something about them that just made me play and love em way more than the others. Probably the soundtracks and the overall aesthethic. As for GT5, I didn't completely love it but I must admit I played the shit out of it anyways. Online, endurance races, collecting the hundreds of cars, manipulating the birthday ticket system lol. GT5 was a lot of fun but it was also sluggish (loading and menus) and the B spec was so annoying. As for 6 I never cared for it so I didn't even buy it until like 3 years after release. It felt weird when I first tried it, seems like a much more basic game than the rest imo but honestly I didn't mind. I did like 60% of the whole game in 1 week after I got it and then dropped it. But I had fun. And just yesterday I played splitscreen with my dad, remembering the old times and playing just how we used to play the previous games.

Yeah, it might have been successful as a ps4 game. They could have given it a higher resolution, more stable framerate and maybe upgraded track geometry and textures and it might have passed for an early generation game. Just look at Forza 5. It was barely more than an Xbox 360 title (way less cars than previous games, super low res and jaggy visuals etc) but it sold well because it was the first Forza on Xbone. People sort of expect early "next gen" games to be clunky and lacking in certain areas. I know Polyphony wants to upgrade their models between every generation, but if you look at the games a lot of the time tons of cars end up being "last gen" anyway, with a select group of "premium" cars being fully upgraded.

You can have better framerates by sticking the console in 720p instead of 1080p. I always recommend doing this since the whole majority of the PS3 and 360 catalog are from 720p games anyway, at least on 360 all games were upscaled to 1080p, on PS3 is a different story, it only upscales on certain games (it needs to be set up by the publisher or the console will change the resolution to the next the user checked on the Video options) and the games that do run on 1080p native are few and far between. GT5 had issues with framerate too on particle effects, especially with grid races, on GT6 it mostly dont happen because of rolling starts. Screen tearing still happens though.

Great retrospective. Really sums up my feelings about the series. I used to love those early stages, scraping the money together for a used 200SX or Prelude to start doing the Sunday cups. GT Sport is great but I loved collecting weird, shitty, slow cars and then thrashing them around the track. Like you said, the constant demand for graphical perfection has made it unfeasible to model so many cars in a modern game so, understandably, those bizarre kei cars and 90s FWD shitboxes have fallen by the wayside. Forza Horizon has been my replacement for that collecting aspect, but its physics is simcade at best. Like you, I doubt we'll see a proper simulator with such a vast array of cars ever again.

Well, the PS3 uses an entirely different architecture than the PS4. The PS4 went back to the standard x86 architecture just like any normal computer. x86 is vastly more common and much easier to code than the cell architecture of the PS3, but it would still be unreasonable to rewrite the same game from the ground up again. The delays were already bad enough, and the game was over 5 years in the making I believe. Despite it being really bad, I still by far have the most memories coming from that game than any other racing game I've ever played. The drag races at indy road course, those 300 mph races on special stage route x, and the amazing times messing around on the Nurburgring. Couldn't have been a better time.

I think you forgot to touch on one main issue that GT6 had. Which was its economy. GT6 was the first game in the series to feature microtransactions. The thing that Polyphony failed to fix which remained an issue in Gran Turismo 5 was the economy its such a grindfest to earn and collect cars. When the online services were active race earnings were multiplied by a login bonus and the login bonus multiplied how much credits a player could make from a race ie picking a slower car to match a faster car was one main multiplayer for the login bonus. The PS3 era GT games had this issue and PS3 Gran Turismo are relics of how game economics and progressive shouldn't work.

I think one of the reasons why Redbull didn't included F1 cars in GT6 is because the license deal with Gameloft for GT Academy from 2012 up until 2016 when it was removed from store.

When I first bought this game the disc was faulty couldn't play it had to get a replacement disc. My biggest problem too was that the track editor was not apart of the game but a app you had to get on a mobile device such as a iPad Sony stopped supporting anyway but at least the vehicle are already available no buying dlc because gt5 had those and when I finally got around to playing it the dlc cars were no longer available.

I don’t really know anything about Grand Tourismo but I remember this game for having a million cars including some really really old cars from the Edwardian era, to the point where I actually saw it showed off in a museum to let you drive the old cars. Or at least I think it was GT6, it might’ve been GT5, but I remember hearing about it and it made me want the game for years, but I’ve never had a PlayStation 3+.

I think it is pretty cool, yesterday I finished the translation of GT4 Driving Missions for GT6. I like what Master Mod brings, but for me, I would like it more if some features could be disabled. I dont like the repeated PS2 tracks (there are tracks that are on the game that have a PS2 version which I find so unnecessary) and the "Press Select to insta win the event". Love the LAN support and the comeback of daily rewards though, it makes the game a bit more enjoyable reducing the money grind.

Get a 160GB PS3 slim and mod it you'll regret it at first because is kinda annoying all the steps BUT is unlimited videogames and your own fully customizable console at your pleasure even you have online until sony decides about that again I can do a backup copy .iso file for my original GT6 if the reading laser someday fails and have it in the internal HDD Or get a super slim with a external HDD because the internal memory is only 12 GB Or you can buy it digitally right now that sony showed their face about the ps3 psn store

What sadden's is that my copy of GT6 refused to boot from the disk. I took my PS3 once to my grandparents house living it in the PS3, and it just refuses to load. No other game suffers so PS3 is fine, but disk is looking pristine...... i will try getting other disk on the cheap and see if that fixes it....but again disk is scratchless and not damaged so i dunno if even that is the problem :/ Shame because GT6 is the best of the series for splitscreen, GT4 for some dumb reason doesnt allow 2nd player use nitrous, GT5 didnt have it and GT6 brought it back and it did work for everyone. Plus well...it has the most vehicles in the series including almost everything from GT3 and up.

Great Review! However, that "soul" you described at the end - it didn't come across to me when I played that game. - The UI looks particularily bland to me. Most stuff is colored in justr one color, and the championship race selection looks particulairly boring to me. No fancy background, no more trophies to display per race, no effort to make each championship look distinctive. Instead, you are given a list of championship with a list of races and some random image to showcase what cind of cars you may be driving. Not as bad as NfS Shift's way of presenting championship (which was literally just "Championship I", "Championship II", etc.), but nothing that grabs your eyes as much as the championshiop posters found in GT3 to GT5. - The streamlined progression makes the game far less enjoyable in my opinion. I liked having the the ability to choose, and prefered grinding the license tests and having a small selection of cars to start with. And if I got bored, I could always switch to a championship or two for a refresher, and come back to the license tests later. Now, you're stuck with the ever same cylcle of race -> license -> race -> license -> race... - Also, I dislike the fact that you don't get a car after each championship anymore. You have boring championships in the older titles as well as in GT6, but the difference is that sometimes you could get a decent car out of it. Like getting a Honda Civic Race Car out of the Civic-exclusive manufacturer championship for instance - a championship you can partake in with your first car after getting your first license. In GT6, you have to get gold in all IB licences to finally get your hands on a full-blown race car (althouh the RE Amemiya RX-7 you get for achieving all-gold in Nat. A is getting close). - This is probably more personal prefeence, but I never really grew fond of the new Original tracks. Cape Ring and Matterhorn can fuck off in particular (eiger Nordwand is cool though). What ever really happened to wide tracks with smooth curves? What happened to Special Stage Route 11 that can be seen in the initial GT6 trailer? - Lastly, and this is a thing that also bugged me in GT5: I despise that the 3rd person camers are stuck so fierecely to the rear of the car. I feel like I have no response about how much I am steering actually. Just becuase I pull the stick fully to one side doesn't mean that the car has to react exactly like that (under-/oversteer and all that), and I'm having severe trouble "reading" my cars behaviour with that "stiff" camera.

I agree. I also really missed the Top Gear test track in GT6. Great tight track to put your suspension tuning to the test and it didn't take a million years to do a few laps. I wasn't really that mad about the cars ported from GT4 either. GT4 looks better on an emulator these days than those cars looked in GT5 and GT6.

I think the stiffness we feel is because the hard suspension setting also the tendency to understeer-oversteer thing with almost every performance tunning even tires, spoiler, brakes, tire camber angle?, etc. to balance and counter it Limited Slip Differential how to use it you have sensitivity options too, read the manual and descriptions I recommend watching the yt channel Viperconcept for learning more And yes they could have more camera options and angles

I still think it's superior to 5 even without the damage that the previous game had, what's frustrating about it is that since it was so online focused you had to save a lot of money to get cool old cars if you weren't able to play or connect online, and when the servers were shutdown the grind and struggle was hell, I still don't understand how I managed to pass the S-class races with the cars that I had.
