There are a lot of misconceptions about Song of the Year and the Grammys in general: 1. Only Recording Academy voting members (12,000+) are eligible to vote for the Grammy Awards. This means that Grammy winners are determined by artists, musicians, songwriters, producers, engineers, mixers, etc. Basically their peers. To help ensure the quality of the voting, members are directed to vote only in their areas of expertise; they may vote in up to ten categories across up to three genre fields plus the four categories of the General Field (Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year, and Best New Artist.) 2. Grammy awards have nothing to do with popularity. The recording industry professionals that vote have a different viewpoint than do fans. 3. Song of the Year is a songwriters' award and is based solely on the music and lyrics. The artist, producers, etc. aren't taken into consideration. Many in the general public get caught up in what they perceive as the importance of the lyrics when giving their opinion on Song of the Year. Lyrics by themselves are just poetry, but an instrumental song is still a song. A good song is a balance between the lyrics and music. People should take the opportunity to listen to the music without the lyrics and then read the lyrics by themselves. Many songs with strong lyrics have really weak music and vice versa. 4. A not so secret, secret is that some artists that receive songwriting awards had very little to do with the actual songwriting process. They are given a song to record, at the minimum change one word, and are then given a songwriting credit. Another scenario is purchasing lyrics outright from a "ghostwriter" and then putting their name on it.

“Maybe his lyrics aren’t that strong” Lewis’s lyrics has such a big meaning behind his songs. For example before you go was about his aunt who committed suicide, the sentence “was there something I could’ve said to make your heart beat better” means was there something I could be done, could I have been there. Someone you loved’s meaning is about losing someone you cared dearly about and now that they are gone you miss them. I personally think his music is impeccable and has a very strong meaning behind it.

A song being about something meaningful doesn't automatically make it well written. I wrote plenty of terrible poems about deep things when I was in middle school. (I'm not calling his lyrics middle school quality I'm just making a point). Personally, I've never liked Lewis Capaldi. His style of singing just doesn't jive at all with the understated singer-songwriter style he's going for, imo. It'd be like Ed Sheeran straining to reach high notes on Supermarket Flowers.

Personally 7 years is just one of my favorite songs, how simple yet sad, and when it crescendos to the climax of the song, just pure bliss.

I love how Taylor always jumps up even when she doesn’t win and is so happy for whoever did win

I don't always follow along with awards shows or competition shows, but when I do, the one I want to win never wins and the one I can't stand does.

I’m not surprised Taylor hasn’t won song of the year but have won multiple album of the year awards because usually some of the other songs in her album are better than the one she released as a single, especially in 1989.
