I think it comes from having other guests. Kimmel and Fallon feel a need for 'dialogue'. On Graham Norton, people can tell stories to the group.

Yes! And Jay Leno was the worst at interrupting. If the guest was getting a laugh, Leno would almost seem jealous and try to say something funny, too.

But in addition, quite the masterful way of stretching the story while keeping the suspense to the end, and the the audience on the edge of their seats. And then that nugget at the end to seal it-when everyone thought the story was over. 👏👏

Those devices that Greg is referring to were often called "radio links". The teacher would wear a microphone and transmitter, and the pupil would wear a receiver. This meant the hearing impaired kid could hear the teacher much more clearly. I often experienced things like the teachers going to the toilet, talking to staff members, etc. If you could recognise the squeak of the doors that the teacher was going through, you could warn the other kids in the classroom (who were messing around while the teacher was away) that the teacher was coming, and everyone would be sitting quietly like little angels when the teacher came back into the classroom. :)
