    I cannot tell you how much I resonate with this video. Life threw everything it could at me during my last semester of undergrad. The pandemic made everything harder, especially applying to PhD programs. I never give up so I wasn’t going to start then. I put my heart and soul into my PhD apps, and covered all my bases (so I thought). I ended up being rejected from every program I applied to. Safe to say I felt like my soul had been crushed. Yes, there are worse things in life, but because I’ve already been through so much, this blow took its toll. I was devastated. Fast forward a year later and I was blessed with admission offers from every program I applied to (including my dream program). I learned a lot along the way and wouldn’t trade the pain and experiences that helped me get here. I hope this offers some sunshine to those facing tough times/rejections. Thank you for this video!

    @@joehere999 I’m sorry to hear that. Probably one of the most difficult things to experience. 1st I would say that PhD admissions are not so cut and dry as undergraduate programs, so try not to look at rejections in the same way. PhDs are often funding based (at least in the US), so the premise of your admission is usually based on the money the department and labs you’re interested in have. Your work has to be something that will fit into a particular lab, since they will be the one funding you, but generally, the department is the one funding your first year until you get admitted into a lab. Long story short, improve your academic training in work that pertains to the lab or field you want to be in. The main way to do that is get research experience. Research experience makes you more marketable. I completed a Masters during the year I had to wait after rejection and that helped things tremendously, but you should know that getting another degree is not necessary at all. There are plenty of ways to get more research experience: post bacc, lab techs, lab manager, lab intern, etc. advice here is limited due to comment length. Also keep in mind, my advice is mainly STEM oriented, so I’m not sure how it applies outside of these fields. Most of all, don’t let rejection deter you- let it drive you instead. If a PhD is the route you want, don’t let anything stop you. Best of luck and best wishes!

    Hi Angel, I was a waitlist survivor too. I waited for a month or two before I officially got it. I do understand how it feels. Starting PhD in 2020 is not easy already, and waiting for a waitlist was just make things worse. But the worst thing is, as an international student, I didn't know at all that can I travel to the US to start my career or not. But, luckily I am. So, keep fighting, Angel, and I will do the same.

I just had one small query: I had an initial phd overview with my prospective supervisor where she had encouraged me to apply. I am freaking out.

    It really depends on the program! For my program, if we decide to interviews - not for fellowships, necessarily, but we do interviews with potential faculty advisors, those will be folks who will either be accepted OR waitlisted, in both cases only if the interview goes well (if the interview doesn’t go well, my program does not extend an acceptance). best of luck !! I hope your interview goes well :)

    Definitely keep hoping, especially if the PhD is something you want to pursue for your career goals! It’s an uncomfortable spot to be in with the uncertainty of being on the waitlist, but getting off the list definitely happens. It’s also no harm to ask the program where you are in the waitlist rankings/the possibility of getting into the program. Wishing you luck.

  • @AngelTrazo

    @AngelTrazo

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hello! One tip that doesn’t get discussed enough - but is so necessary for admission into my program specifically, and for similar programs as well - is FIT (and Faculty). You could have the most stellar writing sample, but for the admissions committee I worked on, what mattered most was having a faculty mentor whose work aligned with yours/who would want to be your mentor throughout the duration of the program. You also need to write your statements and research paper sample to prove that you are a good fit for the program. I’d also recommend reaching out to potential mentors during the application cycle!
