This has to be amongst the most criminally underrated games of all time. Not much games can really make me feel alive at all. If this was a well marketed play store game today it would have over 100 million+ downloads by 2024. Marketing is EVERYTHING!

they REALLY need to re-release this on PS4. They wouldn't even really need to change anything. The graphics and sound were top notch as-is. Just make it HD resolution and add a trophy list

I watched all the gradius and it's awesome to see how the graphic/sound improved with each. This one is beyond epic. Epic visuals, epic tracks, epic story, epic gameplay. Nothing short of 'exhibition style'. Mad programming skillz/team. Great job.

@@versatyledc Gradius VI was indeed a project for the Playstation 3, but they unfortunately scrapped it for unknown reasons... I hope they revive the series at some point, though.

​@@MoKVidelLuckily for you, R-Type did make a comeback a few years back. There's R-Type Final 2 and 3 made by Granzella, which is composed of former Irem employees. Now they're planning to work on a compilation (or remake) of the R-Type Tactics spinoffs.

My favorite thing to do in this game is the "laser wash," where you get the laser beam and can direct its aim with the right thumbstick. Hosing down enemies with the laser not only looks cool, but it's incredibly helpful!

The maneuvering from 33:00 - 34:50 is insane

This and R-Type Final on the PS2 were the golden age of scrolling shmups for me.

I loved Gradius and Life Force for the nes as a kid, but after Gradius 3, I never knew they made more games. Never knew about parodius or the salamander series in japan. It all started in 2012 with me buying bullet hell games on my ipad. Raiden and a few others. I started looking up bullet hell shooters on youtube and some documentary popped up that had footage of Gradius V. Then, it hit me, they made Gradius 4? A week later, I had a playstation 2 and gradius V arrived in the mail. This game blew me away so much, I thought, if I missed out on this game, what other games have I missed out on. This game is solely responsible for me collecting and playing more games than ever. I cannot imagine never getting to experience Gradius V. This game changed my life for the better. Thanks for the video man. You did really great!

really awsome! =) when i played this back in the days, I only got as far as 45min in to this video (after the insane asteroids part). it was nice to finally se the ending of this game. nice played!

To everyone wondering about the Time Loop: Technically, the pilot did not create any clones when causing the anomaly, meaning that they are technically the same. You did not enter any rift when fighting the Brain for the first time, so you aren’t canonically stuck in a loop.

I'll recomend check 1-5 games on arcade and consoles (And Salamander/Life Forse). There is great feel of nostaligia that transfer from one game to another, like every new bosses appears in nexn game with some sort of redisign and new much harder attack patterns. This bosses also appear with music from it own games.

As an 80's kid I have grown up playing & thoroughly enjoying the Gradius games both in the arcade & on home computers & consoles, Gradius V both graphically & sonically took things on a WHOLE OTHER LEVEL, the game is beyond epic ! I don't think the game got the attention it truly deserved when it was originally released on the PS2 all those years ago. To me it hasn't aged one bit.

Good God, that is one gruelling shooter. I'm exhausted just watching. Nice! 👍

The bosses with the 4 barriers before the core is SO NEStolgic!

I always remember playing the original arcade game o'this in the very early 90s. I had "Nemesis" on the commodore 64, and Salamander, which is still one of my fave shooters. I dont play new games these days, and never even knew that Gradius itself made its way into the nxt gen machines! It looks bloody amazing!! Stunning neon fuzed kaleidoscopic landscapes, gorgeous cosmic creations , and never ending beautiful blastorama.

one of the greatest soundtrack ever made for a shmup , "you need some more practice " make me smile each time

Amazing work. I miss games of skill like this. Gradius V is really the end of an era for shmups. That, plus Treasure (Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga) being behind it is just wonderful. (Some of the effects are identical to those games even)

Just a small glimpse of his future, really. Once at end, pilot knew there was nothing he could do, so created a time warp. He knew it would work b/c he already helped his past self (stage 2).

Just an FYI, the composer of the soundtrack also was responsible for soundtrack of Final Fantasy Tactics (PS1) , Ogre Battle (SNES), and Final Fantasy 12 (PS2), to name a few.

Absolutely love this game. Compared to previous Nemesis/Vulcan Venture this Quality believe me. I'm stuck on 2nd half of Asteroid level and get Hammered on the Green gas level 2! Normal difficulty as well lol! ❤🔥🔥

The best part is when the OG Vic Viper makes and cameo and you have to help him out

I stumbled across this gem whilst buying up all the out-dating PS2 games, as PS3 came in... $5 a pop in Wellington, New Zealand... and had no idea what Gradius was when i got this one, but boy was I to find out! Dammmn, is it addictive... the on-your-toes halo-type puzzle action (in which you have to develop appropriate tactical fighting skills to survive the frenetic and unique enemy attacks) was actually just epic. So many absorptive sessions.... the world just melted away and was replaced by this holographic, insane alternative reality. The shit, Konami! I do declare this was the shit...

reading this reply is amazing because I played gradius 3 on SNES (pretty much same experience) and your explanation is exactly what it is. Gradius is some real shit. anyone who plays it at top level is gonna get a call from alpha centuri.

We may not have gotten Ikaruga on the PS2 which is surprising but we did get Gradius V on the system.

Great no death run, another challenge is to kill all enemies on screen, wished they showed percentage of enemies killed like some shooters, perhaps a TAS run

Fun fact: game's name is supposed to be gladius, Latin word for sword, but somebody was really bad at transliterating Japanese loan words

This is a legendary fucking performance bro. I am so astounded. This was on a legit console or emulated? I have beaten some pretty tough games recently. Tysons punchout, no deathed gradius one and two for the nes and famicom, NDR contra and super C, beat the ninja gaiden series, but this game man. I am working on it, and I'm not even gonna hide the fact that I'm about to try this strat out. I had been using directional, but I recently started using freeze, but I used the regular laser. I see I should have been using ripple. I knew freeze would work better for me. That is whats so great about gradius games, the unbelievable amount of replayability. Its so customizable, not just Gradius V. I am constantly learning new strats. But this game is so damned hard, it is the only one that I started learning on very easy rather than normal or hard. I'm going to share a story for my next comment about this game. I hope to no death run it on very easy and slowly work my way up to hard. This playthrough made me think I could do it, so thanks.

This run was done on a slim PS2, no emulators. I have a bunch of other Gradius V videos on this channel using the other types, clearing the higher loops, beating it on very hard, etc if you want to see some other strategies.

I appreciate it! I think the strongest setup is using type 1 options combined with E-Laser, vertical double and spread bombs. Makes the bosses go down almost instantly and the vertical double is really good for the stages. Using E-laser does take some getting used to though as you have to time your shots unlike using the other lasers.

Thank God my wife and I bought ps3 and were able to buy old classics like this and others among them try play them again and again! Konami should make another one with 4 player co op, and with branching stages, and more levels, and different variations of ships with different power ups

The key is to always have a shield recharge handy! Well, that and play the game over and over and over again lol.

I'm confused at the end, is Nemesis actually canon to the main serie? What happens after the events of this game? Will we see another time travel?

Gradius V is hands down the best horizontally scrolling shooter of all time, nothing comes even remotely close. While Ikaruga is the best vertically scrolling one.

Nope, Gradius V wins against R-Type Dimensions, they are different games though, R-Type is pure memorization. About CAVE shmups, they are bullet hell, they are excellent, but Ikaruga is the best vertical one regardless of that.

Okay, you used a bonus weapon. But, man, you're anabsolute MANIAC! I can't even beat this game in "very easy" difficulty, let alone without losing any lives. Do you have anything to teach me about it? Cheers!

No, and you don't have to get it on eBay if you have a PS3, it's on the PSN store and on sale for only $3. However, the more you play, the more continues you earn, giving you more of a fighting chance to get further in the game.

we need a new gradius VI multiplatform for steam, PS4, XBOX ONE, PS VITA, SWITCH and 3DS maybe... I'm sure it would sell good.. they just have to stay 2D with 3D effects, simple sidescrolling shoot em up... this would make my day

Kazunari Yoshikuni Konami just announced castlevania symphony of the night and rondo of blood for ps4 this month. So hopefully they'll make Gradius 6 as well as porting Gradius V to ps4.
