Don't judge a book by it's cover... an idiom we have heard and used. However our grade 2 learners had to show their skills in doing just the opposite when a pile of books from the school library landed on their table. They worked in groups to sort the books into fiction and non-fiction by looking at the cover page.
Following this, the learners were given a bunch of strips which had the features of both the genres. They sorted them and then used the same to reason out why a particular book was fiction or non-fiction.
They went a step ahead in identifying the types(sub-genres) of fiction and non-fiction which brought out their understanding about the world of books. Learners of Grade 2, Stage 3 had a fun time exploring, sorting and identifying the different genres.
