Her voice is magical. Everytime I hear sing I get goosebumps. Very unique voice. Probably one of the best voices out there.

I first heard this on LGBTQ+ TIKTOK and I started crying at how their voice break at “I now know my name”. I’m in the closet to my family and I’m scared to come out to a conservative family. This song gives me power and it makes me think everything will be better.

I wish I was versed in musical theory, because I'm telling you, this song is not as simple as it might seem. There is a powerfully gifted artist at work. Grace has crafted I Don't Know My Name to be both mournful and aspirational, bouncy and sing-along with hushed reverence intermingled. It has all the contradictions of youth built into the melody. Add to that the incredibly personal lyrics that young and old can relate to, and it elicits a very deep personal reaction, in almost everyone. But Grace IS this song. Her voice and the image of her audition are playing back in my mind whenever I hear this. As it's playing now (while I type) I'm thinking that, as the song ends, she has taken her audience on a journey with her. The story caries her, and us, through a shared experience of uncertainty, discovery and self realization. It's amazing - she's amazing.

I have a story to tell. I’m a teenage girl who loves to sing and write songs. I think I was around seven when I actually wrote down the lyrics to my first song. The more I would write and sing, the more confident I would become in my singing. My parents have always supported my songwriting and the people that knew that I wrote my own songs always found it very impressive that I would write songs at such a young age. That led me to believe that I had the potential to become an amazing artist. Then, I was watching TV one night, and at 8 I discovered Grace VanderWaal. I was so intrigued and inspired at the same time. When I realized that she was the girl that won America’s Got Talent, I decided to check out her channel. It was all original songs. Everybody was shocked that a young girl was already writing such beautiful original material at 12. It gave me so much confidence because my brain initially thought “ but I can write songs at eight, i’m so cool!” Then, I looked back at my song. It turned out to look absolutely horrible in comparison. Soon enough, I became obsessed with Grace and started to analyze her songwriting process to try and write an original piece with her exact songwriting process. I even did impressions of her. That way I felt like people could finally see the other side of me. I felt like the fact that I could impersonate another singer would make people more impressed with my knowledge of music. That day, my dad came in the room, sat down with me, and asked me, “ why are you choosing to do this?” I explained why, and he said, “you really don’t need to. You’re perfect the way you are.” That made me realize that I didn’t need to be like anybody else. I felt like I *finally knew my name.* Since that moment, I have still written loads of songs and continued my singing hobby. I do sometimes look back at my old songs and reminisce about how childish and silly they seem, but that’s okay. I’m now going into high school and I can proudly say Grace has been a huge inspiration for me.

@@YuLingZeng313 Me too, I had a friend and I trusted on her all my secrets but our 7 years of friendship, from 3 to 9/10 years old got lost because she got together with the popular people who criticize everyone for anything and told all my secrets and now she talks bad about me behind my back but I don´t care because I´ve got new friends that support me and help me get over it. Now I´m 11 and I still miss her a bit but she changed a lot, she has a fake piercing and insults the teachers but before she was a very nice girl. My strategy is to remember all the things that she did before we ended this friendship and some were things that I won´t forgive to her so with that I can keep straight to my way to happiness :)

It is truly amazing and remarkable even unimaginable that a 10-12 year old was able to write such unique and powerful song. I don’t know all the technical terms for all the things in this song that blow me away but their are so many. Not just for the obvious reasons like Grace’s voice and the amazing lyrics. Those two things are great, but it’s all the other things that really amaze me. From the delivery of the lyrics to the pace changes in the music. It’s truly brilliant on every level and there are many many levels.

Hi Grace, This is the first time I have heard the studio version. Of course I fell in love with your audition version. I had got out of the habit of watching AGT and wasn't even going to watch this season. I recorded the 2nd episode of the season and was fast forwarding through most of the acts until this young lady came out with a ukulele in hand. I have watched so many young ladies before trying to get their break singing covers and trying to sound like so many singers before them. I couldn't bare the thought of seeing another broken heart get their hopes and dreams dashed so I almost fast forwarded again. But when Howie said "you're a beautiful young lady do you know that" your response with that witty "why thank you" was gold. My attention was held up to when Simon said "do you think you can win" of course your response "miracles can happen, so possibly" will go down in history. At this point of time not in my wildest imagination did I think it could possibly happen. No one this young had won in ten years and no one certainly had won singing an original. It just wasn't going to happen. But I had to watch thinking how sad I was going to feel seeing another broken heart going home with her hopes dashed. Then the first words came out "I don't know my name". I sat there nervous and anxious waiting and then the final. When I heard "I now know my name" with the power and feeling I haven't ever seen on AGT or anywhere else I can remember I knew I was witnessing a star in the making right before my very eyes. Sorry to be so windy but I was leading up to how much I loved your audition version and it will always hold a place in my heart. That being said your studio version is a little different but is just as great and I couldn't be happier. I know you worked hard on it and you should be very proud. I know I am.

To Mr. Greg Wells, I am sorry I ever had doubts about what you would do with "I Don't Know My Name" - it's perfect; perfectly perfect! Grace's soft airy vocals are not lost in production tricks. You have honored her singular vocal style and allowed the pacing and melody to flow as Grace intended it, ending beautifully with the orchestral accompaniment. Grace, please don't ever stop making music. You are a beautiful light shining on a world with many shadows. For some people music is background noise. For others, it's as vital as the air we breathe; the soundtrack to our lives; what conjures the most intense emotions. I believe you already know that, and have for quite some time. Songs "from my heart", you have said on several occasions. "From your heart" means something special, when it's coming from you! I shall now wait impatiently, till the full album is playing on perpetual repeat, on my funky old CD player, and blasting out of my speakers - filling the house with beautiful music. I believe, you see, that classic music (such as yours) is best appreciated as it would be experienced when preformed live. Enjoy this time, Grace - remember it - and recall it in the future when you may have doubts. And never doubt how much you meant to all of us.

Well, auto-tune is not what I had considered, not with Greg Wells as the producer. Grace's voice is so rich and textured, I was concerned that anything more than the cello and minimal drums would dilute her best quality - emotion - it radiates from her. I have to believe that Grace knew what she wanted and that everyone (family included) was happy with the results. It's all Grace, till nearly the end - so incredible. The last chorus, and then that soaring orchestra, I was truly moved - beautiful.
