GRACE VANDERWAAL FENDER SIGNATURE UKULELE! Worth the hype?

It's finally here! Thanks to Heid Music, I was able to get my hands on the highly anticipated Grace VanderWaal concert ukulele from Fender. In this review, I’ll be going over the specs of the signature Grace Vanderwaal ukulele from Fender, playing the instrument, delivering pros and cons, comparing it to the Zuma Concert Fender ukulele, and answering questions taken from my Instagram followers. Do you think it's worth they hype? Leave your comment down below and share your thoughts about this ukulele. I'd love to know what you think.

I own this uke and the more I play it the more I like it. I like the brighter sound. Now if Grace would just design a tenor uke, I would be very happy.

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment :). I really am appreciative that you left your feedback about the uke and your experience. The more and more people share their unbiased opinions, the better. Thank you so much :). That would be really cool to see if the concert and the soprano ukes are successful that might lead to a tenor.

I agree. I think you have to play as many as you can in order to find the right one for you. Before KZread, I had two ukuleles, and I was about to sell one of them so that I would just have one. It was all I needed, and the thought of taking the time to go out and buy another one stressed me out because of the time it would take to choose one.

Hi Katie! I just wanted to mention that I went ahead and bought the Fender Zuma and I love it! It’s very comfortable to play, and I like the mellow sound. I had bought 3 other concert size ukuleles (!), and the action on those must’ve been too high because my fingers and hand would get really tired from playing. The Zuma is my favorite (so far 😃). Just letting anyone know who is interested... 😊 Thanks again for a great review!

I have this ukulele, paid more for it because it was imported to Ecuador where I live and teach voice and ukukele. Not many ukulele teachers here in my city. (I'm a US citizen, but got married here to a local) The action on this ukulele is quite good, no problems there, it has a good, clear, slightly higher timbre than other Fender ukes I tried at the same store. No problems at all with the Fishman pickup or tuner. I got bored one day and painted a lotus design in the upper corner, and it spiced up the look a bit. I usually prefer more of a matt finish, but overall, it is a beautiful instrument. I just wish it had some reverb or chorus effects to make it more fun when amplified, but that's just me. No strap buttons either. But I think anyone buying this will get their money's worth. And the gig bag is really good, outside pocket for strings and such, and it seems almost waterproof, and has a good amount of padding. The ukulele as a "serious" instrument is gaining momentum here, but for the most part music stores here import the poorest quality instruments because they don't know any better. In any case, I am glad I stumbled upon this uke before someone else got it!! Enjoy!!

Very good review. I feel you are very fair and unbiased. My GV concert uke will be here late this afternoon. One thing I think you should maybe mention as a plus is that it should be considered more of an investment as a collectable. After all, this is a signature model for the youngest artist ever and the first signature ukulele. I believe that should account for something. It's a very high honor for Grace. Oh, and it comes with 3 free months of Fender lessons.

Hi Katie, I love this review. Thanks. I have owned a Fender Hi-Gloss Tenor Ukulele for about five years now and absolutely recommend it. I put a low G string on it and use it regularly; you can see it on my family oriented KZread channel playing the theme from "Game Of Thrones." I have a suggestion for you to combat that sticky neck problem that comes with Hi-Gloss finishes; it is called "Finger Ease," I have used it on all my instruments for 50 years. Just spray it on the strings and neck, buff it lightly and you are done. Re-apply as needed. I get mine from Amazon! BTW, it also greatly reduces "fret and string talk." Thanks for producing your videos, they are so informative, I never skip one!

Good suggestion Bill! I was going to suggest using Finger Ease too. It works especially well on the strings for ukulele basses. The strings being rubberized tend to "drag" a bit so Finger Ease really helps with that.

Thank you Katie for all the videos you present on your channel. I bought it not because I am a fan of Grace, but 1) a reliable pickup (according to your experience) 2) solid construction (children around) 3) laminated body (low humidity) 4) beautiful high gloss (attract me to practice) 5) Fender headstock (feel like a rock star without playing guitar) 6) Partnership between a celebrity and Fender (quality needs to be there) 7) Nice padded gig bag 8) Most importantly, as you always say, trying it at music store and 'feel' it. I went to the music store, saw it in person, wow it did look great compare to other ukulele with pick up. It stands out from the ukulele crowd. It was not set up yet, the fret edges were sharp, there was a buzz on a string. The salesperson passed it to the luthier at the repairshop at the back of the music store, and fixed the problems right a away. Two gloden strap buttons were put on with no extra cost. It feels comfortable and good on my hands, the frets are easy to press. I got to test it on the amplifier on site too. I followed your tutorial and changed strings. I switched the strings to Worth Brown Light (my fingers thank you for mentioning/singing 'a whole new world' about fluorocarbon strings on the Cythia Lin Ohana ukulele review video). The sound is still bright, I am fine with it, as it is the uniqueness of this uku. Not only thanking you for useful ukulele videos, but also thanking you for bringing a great positive personality (plus your sunny smile) to the community. Good luck to your baby❣

Right now I'm challenging myself and ability to break down a song by listening and watching someone strum. Very good review Katie. Ive tried several Fender ukes out. I really like the action on them and they are easy to play and sound really nice. Although I'm not a big fan a celebrity backed instrument, other than the Iz edition Martin which I would love to have❤, I couldnt see myself ever buying this Fender. I wonder why she left Luna for Fender for? I always say stay with who you braught to the dance.

Great insights! I understand what you're saying, and I'm not a hype person either. I can understand why she left Luna for Fender. Perhaps it's because they offered her a better deal. Artists make peanuts and have to sign massive 360 deals where almost all of the revenue (online music sales, tour merch, brand deals) goes to the record companies. Perhaps Fender offered her a better deal that would take care of her in the long run. Taylor Swift and Metallica did an amazing job protecting their money and rights, so maybe she's following their example. These are some great things to think about.

Hi Katie! I’d just like to show some appreciation for the effort you put into your videos. I started learning ukulele around August last year, I’ve progressed so much and it’s all thanks to you! I started on a cheap soprano from Makala, and it’s served me well, but it was time for an upgrade. This would have been perfect for me, except I wanted a tenor. Anyway, I’ve decided to go with the Fender Rincon. I’d love it if you could tell me the name of the little riff that you play at 1:42, or point me in the direction of somewhere where I could learn it. Thank you so much for helping me embark on this amazing journey, I now can’t go a day without picking up an instrument, haha! ♥️🙏 🎶

Hi Katie, Have this "on trial" at home right now and really like the sound. It's not "boxy" like other ukes I've tried....and have owned and tried LOADS of makes and models. The ONLY thing I'll say is it is QUIET. Definitely needs to be plugged in if playing with other instruments. Please, Katie, can you recommend a concert uke with this kind of brightness and balance of sound, but that is louder (need a pickup installed as well - or not as I can do that myself). I've watched all your review videos but can't find what I'm looking for

I adore this little ukulele but several well known ukulele teachers I have checked in with have all said it's not worth the hype. They all felt that Fender put more into the cuteness and design of the instrument rather than actual quality. Most have told me to get a traditional style (most still highly advising Kahla) until Fender gets on point with this little thing. It's soooooo cute. I want one so badly, but I don't have a lot of money to throw away, so I am going to still stick with the traditionals for now, but I'm definitely hoping in a few years, we can hear an overall resounding YES on this little Fender ukulele. You're literally the first one I've heard say this was a good buy on all sides... Do you really think it's worth the money if you're not really necessarily considering it to be a professional level? Again, I feel like I could buy a tenor professional traditional model for that kind of money or just a little more. Seems like an awful lot of money to spend on a beginner / intermediate ukulele when you could get a traditional style with the same quality or better for less money.

Hi! Thanks for watching. I’ve since been able to try a large variety of ukes from many different brands, and it’s definitely a buyers market. You can find pretty much anything to suit your personality and playing needs. If you can, I’d play it in person and see if it’s right for you. I have a “How to Upgrade Your Uke” Video that features lots of ukes to choose from and play them all back to back so that you can choose what “speaks” to you. I’ll link it below. If you’re looking for a beginner uke, I have a uke buyer’s guide for beginners that I think you’ll enjoy. I’ll also link it below. Overall, you’ll see and hear over 40 different ukes in these two videos. I talk about design details, features, and price. There are sound samples from Lanikai, Ohana, Kala, Flight, Córdoba 😀 . Let me know if you have any questions.

It does sound brighter. If it gets more people, playing the ukulele, it's a win-win. You mentioned in your quick Instagram livestream, you may have an easier version of your Beatles song for the colab. I'm finding it a challenge. Both parts, can't get the speed or the finger picking, to sound good at all. Like to participate, yet at this stage it's not happening. Any ideas would be appreciated Katie. Hi and thanks for watching. I do answer all of those questions in the review very specifically, so let me know if you have any other questions if you didn't find my answers in the video satisfying. I don't know if they ship to Lebanon, but I'm sure a big company like Fender could. It will probably have a bigger shipping cost.

Thank you for watching :). I bet you are a great at the ukulele. If you can play the guitar, I'm sure you're doing great on the ukulele. You don't need an expensive one at all to make beautiful music or to enjoy the instrument. If you have one that works for you, that is the best one for you.

I bought this ukulele, the only thing i don't like about it is that it is fairly heavy. Since I am just getting started to learn, maybe I will get used to it, but as of now I am having trouble holding it while I am standing. Is it really the weight of the ukulele that is causing the problem? Or does it just take time to getting used to, even though it is on the heavier side?

Get a strap to relieve some of the weight. Also, you will be able to focus on playing instead of worrying about holding the ukulele.

I wish they had went for genuine Klusons tuners instead of copies.

I think those would have been too heavy for the instrument making the instrument unbalanced and too top heavy. I think that's why they chose the copies.

I don't know. I have been playing ukulele for last two years and I don't seem to be impressed with this uke. It's sound not so bright as others. I have Ortega Rosewood series limited edition (reverse headstock), so I can say it's similar to this one and it's much brighter. But if you are Grace's fan.. nothing else matters!

i am so happy this was in my feed today! So do you like a bright sounding uke? is that a good thing to go with your singing voice? i am a soprano, and want to pick a good uke to sing with. and I'm confused if mellow or bright is better. and are the strings fluorocarbon or nylon? maybe that is affecting tone. you can go here for an example of my singing if you have time. kzread.info/dash/bejne/hHxrs5ttcsbLfKw.html i would love a uke with a pickup because i think its better for recording i heard. not sure. trying to figure it all out.

Great questions :). I tried to be as unbiased as I possibly could with the sound test and my personal preference because I know that some people want a more mellow tone and some want a punchy, bright tone to cut through. Brighter or darker doesn't necessarily mean that one is better than the other, so I tried to let the listener decide if brighter or mid range was better for them. I hope that makes sense. For recording purposes, an instrument with a pickup can help isolate the uke track without any other noises interfering. Some people prefer to mic the uke because they feel that it really captures the true tone of the live instrument, and others can't stand it :). It's all trial and error to see what you like the best. Sorry. I wish I could tell you for sure one way or the other.
