GRACE POTTER ON FINDING THE RIGHT GUITAR FOR YOU

Музыка

Here are some outtakes from my interview with Grace Potter - you can watch the full episode on the AXS TV app - she shows me a selection of her guitars to try and find the right one form me. As a beginner its such a treat to be able to try out different guitars and play around with them... Im still at the beginning of this wonderful exploration of the guitar so am so lucky to have a helping hand from the finest out there to try and understand the instrument a little more.

    I discovered Grace years ago thanks to No Depression magazine and been a fan for so long - got to see her back with the Nocturnals at Antone's back in 2010 and they absolutely tore the roof off the place. Love seeing how far she's come and that there's still so much joy in making music.

    V's are super comfortable to play in the classical seated position as shown in the beginning of this video. I've played V's like this for so long that I now play everything in that position. For me, it gives much better upper fret access, improved pick control and a great view of the entire fretboard. Again, this works for me. It may not work for you at first but if you do it long enough you will surely experience the benefits.

    After seeing her AMAZING Nashville show at the Ryman Auditorium I am now a HUGE fan of Grace Potter. WOW! What a high-kicking, fire cracker, live wire,wild child she is on stage, and especially when she's shredding on her signature flying V. Brilliant rock songs, singing, guitar and keyboard playing and awesome performer. I LOVE LOVE LOVE HER!

    Shame on you Grace Potter! Your ex-husband loved that guitar I'm sure. And with the money that you've made you could buy your own Mosrite guitar. And that Dan Electro (Silvertone) I had when I was a kid. These were made from scraps from the counter tops that the man that originally made them from. He was a cabinet maker and made the cheapest garbage that he could find! The only good thing about those guitars other than being USA made were the pickups. The rest is firewood! That Gretsch is the only one featured in this video that I would want. And if I was going to have a guitar made it sure as Hell wouldn't be something that someone else designed and modified to my liking. I'd design it myself as Eddie Van Halen did. He was once quoted when he designed the Musicman guitar that bears his name " I endorsed the guitar I used to play. I designed this one. Big difference." and I feel the same way. How can something that was someone else's idea ever be yours?

    I don’t think grace can really play the guitar. I’ve seen some photographs of her performing live and she’s engaged in cool poses barring chords with one finger and every photograph seems to be just like that as if “ I’m looking cool, but not really playing “

    Back in the 70's, even the 80's it was cool to own a guitar, and cool people selectively were in bands with guitars. But, for too many years (sorry girls) any chick can just pick up a legendary guitar like its a new lipstick and "play" Ritchie blackmore etc. For me, guitars have lost their unique ,cool factor. Too many 5-6 + year olds with them doesn't help the unique /cool factor either!

  • @sisuriffs

    @sisuriffs

    I love that era too. The cool factor is a thing for sure, but with respect, I disagree with you a little re: chicks and guitars. I remember during the eighties how keys were taking over from the guitar gods era. What a relief (for this guitar guy at least) when Slash and Van Halen (obviously there were others too, like Prince) came along. The guitar industry was still in trouble for a bit, as aging boomers seemed to be the only ones collecting and adoring cool classic guitars. Serious people were predicting the inevitable end of the guitar as a cool featured instrument. I am grateful to the likes of Bonnie Rait, these women, Orianthi, and it’s impossible to overstate the impact of Taylor Swift to save the coolness of guitars, especially for girls. Guitars truly are cool. Period. I don’t think anything is lost after all.
