Matthew's three books on the gospel - Salvation By Allegiance Alone, Gospel Allegiance and The Gospel Precisely are all really good and very readable. They have really helped me to form a coherent whole from Christus Victor and Penal Substitution teaching while convincing me further of the error of reformed Augustinian teaching (not decrying Calvinists who are the most loyal of Christ followers but mistaken in their understanding of election and perseverance - my marriage happened and has survived because of our love and faithfulness not because we had no choice!)

See David DeSilva's book on Patronage, Honor, Purity, ..on New Testament cultural values. And yes, John Barclay's book on Paul and the gift. Matthew Bates is making a deeply significant contribution.
