GR IV: The ONE thing it's missing.

My last minute wish list for Ricoh Japan to consider for the Ricoh GR 4. What do you think? Is it wishful thinking? Do you agree? Share your thoughts below. "It's time for film!" Oh, wait that was the other camera. It is time for GR! :-)

Personally, I'd have hoped to see a Ricoh GRIV that looked like the Ricoh GR1v from the film era, with a viewfinder and built-in flash, without it being any bigger. It's not the same technology, of course, but I'd hope one day to see a digital version of this camera.

I want to say a couple of things dear Samuel. First, I love the Gr III and really look forward to get the new Ricoh Gr IV. Secondly, finally i understand why people complain about dust and lens issues because i have been struggling with repair services in the us with my ricoh gr iii. It´s been like two months and they have not been able to fix the camera. In the meantime i just hope the new ricoh gr iv to be more reliable when thinking about construction and of course after sales repair services.

    - stabilize the sensor around the focus point like what nikon recently did (it seems to really work well) - simplify the menu structure (like a Q for example) - no video features required, just remove the option completely - more adjustment options for creating in camera film recipes (would be great to be able to do it on your phone, see a preview and push it to the gr) - probably not possible but a better battery would be really great. - a monochrome hdf companion version next to a regular color one (i would buy both) - a custom crop option, would like to set my own in-camera crop (together with more film recipe configuration options (yes profiles bit film recipe sounds nicer😂) it would make it fun and easy to share everywhere without additional edits on the phone.

Videos like this are how cameras can be developed according to the requirements of the users. It’s how Fuji gained huge market share, because they listened to us requesting cameras that operated like analog cameras, instead of computers ... Great video! My concept of an ultimate GR: - add an electronic interface to the hot shoe for an external EVF with small contact pins, so the body without the EVF can look identical as the previous GR's - instead of a tilt screen, introduce an external miniature waist level(!) viefinder with high nit OLED for the hot shoe, wich sits nearly flush to the top plate - "solid state" construction with no collapsable lens barrel and internal focusing for state of the art fast AF and absolute dust and weather proof construction - full electronic shutter with high flash sync, so that no mechanical shutter is needed at all - Quad-Bayer Sensor with 50 to 100 million pixels or even more, with downsampled 20mp DNG files as standard, but possibility to "zoom" via crop - add a multi purpose ring with "focus tab" for zooming (cropping) or focusing stepless with absolute (!) values, not with relative positioning - add Pentaxes pixel shift technology with anti moire simulation, bayer pattern compensation etc. - perhaps make it a 1" sensor for even more compactness like the GR Digital - internal flash, even if it's only LED

I really like the Ricoh/Pentax duo. I even bought a DSLR Pentax body and I’m using it with old Takumar manual lenses. I had the GR II and III and love them, but I had to sell both last year. What really worries me is their capacity to meet the demand for a long awaited product like the GR IV. I ordered another GR III in February this year and in May I cancelled the order because they had no clue of when it would be delivered. I believe the waiting list for a possible GR IV would be outrageous, unfortunately. But I have the best wishes for the continuity of the GR series 🙌🏼

If they did, they would have timed it with the Fujifilm X100VI drop to meet that demand when the X100VI would be inevitably backordered for months. No rumours, nothing about it- so Pentax/Ricoh was caught with their pants down when demand for the GRIII shot up.

YEEEEESSS to the accessory viewfinder!! I personally would LOVE an optical VF with: _ accurate framelines _ AF confirmation _ exposure information (aperture, shutter speed, iso) That's all that's needed and I would 1000% buy it if they are able to do that. Because the GR as it is is basically perfect, they don't need to change the form factor but they can still offer a very nice VF that ppl can buy if they want/need it and just leave it if they want the 'pure' GR.

More speed/less blackout would definitely be appreciated. It’s really easy to miss a moment if there is too much happening or you miscalculated the shot. An EVF would be cool for the times I want a bit more „precise“ shooting because it does happen that I find stuff in images I didn’t notice while shooting. However I think your two wishes could clash. For example on the Leica M240 if you use the EVF the camera becomes slower.

I'd like to see a *decent* hotshoe mounted OVF that has a few electronic functions on it, so it's a sweet spot between performance, battery life, price, weight and features, but more useful than those basic OVFs. And a flash unit that can mount on the side, like an Olympus XA. For me, these are no-brainers. I think the best solution for an external EVF would be *compatibility* with an existing EVF, or if they just rebadged/licensed an existing EVF from Nikon/Canon etc.

The one thing I really like about Ricoh and their philosophy is that they only come up with a new camera if it really improves how we take images. I like the experience of taking pictures, that should evolve. The good thing here is that you actually made them think of that, since you're the most heavy user by far as far as I know. So thanks for the insights and let's hope for another update. But as I said I also really like how they stick to their philosophy of slower updating than anyone else who's just running for selling new devices :)

A possibility is to have a built-in range finder-style viewfinder and leave the hot shoe for flash and/or EVF. The megapixel upgrade, if it is part of GR IV, would be simply a marketing move to meet the current consumer trend, but if Ricoh does do that, the cost might be considerably higher because logically, a more powerful processor/sensor will be needed. Let's wait and see!

Given the limited power of the GR III battery, and EVF could be a real problem for the already limited battery life. An EVF in principle would, of course, be nice in some situations.

Yes, the viewfinder! at least someone has already said that. I would like to add about digital, although if we express a desire, let it be a hybrid viewfinder something like Fuji's x-pro viewfinder. So that there is both an exposure indicator and parallax and cropping frames in crop mode, but at the same time it has good optical quality. For example, I do not know if you have used the Nikon Coolpix A viewfinder, but in terms of brightness and clarity, I have not seen better. Yes, I still shoot on Nikon, although at one time there was a GR2)))

EVF is the one thing that I’ve always wanted. It’s not something that I’d use every single shot but it would definitely be something that I would use often. I also don’t want the GR4 to be bigger but if they could make it a little thicker and it adds weather resistance since the lens wouldn’t have to move as much I would love that if nothing else was updated. Also, If losing Macro capabilities would help make that a reality then I’d be okay losing that too. I like having it but it’s not all that frequently used at least for me.

I sold my GRIIIX since I got a Sony RX1R because it has a flash, and small external EVF which makes it near perfect (for me). Might not be pocketable but small enough to fit in coat pocket and has a f2 Zeiss lens and a FF sensor. Oh and the EVF can tilt which is super handy for certain shots. Also came out a decade ago and still my favourite street camera after trying the latest offerings from the major brands.

I think there should be more color options from the start. I love the Diary color, and if there's no silver other light color at the start, I won't be interested

I'am almost 2m the only thing i need is a flip-up screen for hip shooting. If it has this, i will definately buy one! The Lumix LX15 has one and it felt really solid. A EVF hybrid like X100 would be really cool.

Since the GR for me is more of an alternative camera I don't care at all about a viewfinder. I agree that a sensor and processor update that speeds the camera up would be great. I don't know what would make me upgrade though for my purposes on the street it works pretty great.

My ideal Ricoh GR IV would have to be a proper upgrade with many new features. The new Ricoh GR Samuel is suggesting it would not be a real upgrade in my opinion. These are the main features I would like to see on the next Ricoh GR even if that would increase a bit the size of the camera which would not be a big deal for me: - 40mp sensor - new image processor with improved low light performance - a fixed compact prime lens which is already out that doesn't' suck any dust because there is no lens to retract. - new film simulations - a better compensation of highlights which is currently not so great on the Ricoh GR III - a tiny flash mostly for daytime photography - an improved manual mode which allows to change shutter speed and aperture more quickly and easily than it is now - weather sealed body. I don't care if the camera would end up being a bit bigger. Same sensor and small improvements would be a total disappointment.

I would consider getting a GR if it had a external viewfinder attachment and maybe monochrom

Yes. Add on view finder. Bigger sensor or sharper sensor, optics.

An functional adapter so we can use the leica Visoflex2 viewfinder ( might be an idea for aftermarket manufacturers)

I’d hope the GR IV’s back screen would also get a serious upgrade, a bright contrasty OLED would be amazing.

I would love to see B&W versions of the GR III/x (and future GR4/x) using the excellent Pentax K3MIII monochrome sensor, with a built-in high contrast red filter that can be switched in/out as needed. And full camera weather sealing (using the external filter/lens adapter) would be great! Also another strong vote for an external tiltable hot-shoe-based full OLED EVF with minimum 3M+ resolution, and a tiltable (up/down) rear LCD panel for the GR4/x cameras. Plus keep the GR III/x cameras in production for a self-contained slimmer version, if the tiltable LCD will increase the size. Cheers!

In your past video I suggested a popup EVF (something like in the Sony RX100 series) but I think a hotshoe EVF could also be a good idea. C’mon Ricoh, we’re waiting for the the GR IV since too much!!

For me, i will say a GR4 should solve the button issue, the form factor is perfect and get rid of the flash is great as you wont use a flash when you want to sneak in the street. What i want more from GR is better focus and performance at night The noise on high ISO is quite bad....

The Ricoh GX100 (2007) and GX200 have EVFs, they are much more close in size to the GR, so it shows they have done EVFs before.. They were however smaller sensors with no in body IS so there was more room in the body.
