You do a good job with this explanation. I am a math teacher, so I explain for the living, and I do it mostly by heart and I am good at it (like you). But then I am also a web developer and have to work with APIs on a daily basis. It's funny to see your explanation make my expertise bloated bold in my CV seem like an actual child's play (which indeed is, once you grasp the concept).
