Govee TV BackLight 3 Lite Review - The Difference Is UNREAL!

Ғылым және технология

Watch Govee's new TV Backlight 3 Lite extend my TV for less than £75.
**UPDATE** Matter support is not yet available! (it's coming soon) my mistake! In the mean time on/off functionality and colour changing etc will still be available via voice using the usual Alexa skill and Google Home skills.
This video is sponsored by Govee all opinions are my own
If you're looking for an alternative to the Philips HDMI sync box then this is a review of the TV Backlight 3 Lite, which is the only camera based LED BIAS strip on the market that will actually mimic the colours on your screen with 99.9% accuracy.

I love my T1 and will be sticking with it as the T2/T3 can’t be used with mounting beneath the TV (at least not as easily). It’s all linked to my Home Assistant/Hubitat/Homekit environment and the colour accuracy is plenty good enough for me. Plus the T3 doesn’t seem to have 75 inch support yet. Tip: Use the KZread calibration video which has the 4 orange squares in the corner to save sticking the physical ones on your screen during setup.

  • 8 ай бұрын

@@flink6150 yep. The software fully supports it, part of the setup asks you for the orientation. There are a number of KZread channels showing some nice ways to totally hide it on your TV stand as well (personally I’ve just stuck it to the bottom of the TV as it is floating on an arm off the wall so no other option).

Watched the video yesterday, bought it and installed it today. Works great. Be sure to pick the "Part" option to get the colors to match the action on the screen. This is a great option for us as we feed our TV with an ethernet cable. The camera sits at a 90 degree angle to the screen and I thought it a bit too obvious, but you quickly don't notice it when you're involved with a show. (I'll add that my wife chuckled at the cockroach/3M joke).

Thanks Paul, hope you've had a great Christmas. I got this as a present and came to install it but didn't have enough clearance between the front of the TV (I have a Samsung QLED from 2017 with the slim Samsung wall mount) and the wall to fit the camera. I will try to buy a right angled USB-C adapter to see if this will allow it to fit and post the result here in a couple of days. For reference you need 75mm from the front of your screen to the wall to fit the camera in.

Also you can put the camera at the bottom of the tv if you're using the old generation (if it's not wall mounted that is). And the lights are so good with animation movies!

I have a similar backlight and I recommend adding an additional cheap white backlight strip to the tv. I find that when the backlight turns off during a dark scene it is distracting. The effects are certainly more subtle with the extra light but it makes everyday usage so much better and you can always turn off the extra light strip when you want the full immersion.

After watching loads (and I mean loads) of your videos over the past few months I finally bit the bullet and bought the govee T1 this last weekend so I could dip my toe in the immersive light ocean - plus it was only £41 on Amazon so....bargain! So after only 2 days I only have 1 thing to say - OH MY GOD, Im never going back to the boring way of watching TV ever again. In fact we love it so much in our house we are looking at "upgrading" all the TV's in the house - might need to look at the T2/T3 options after watching this video though. Thanks for making these videos - fun, entertaining and informative - perfection really 🙂

Loved the musical accompaniment to the on/off segment. I usually don't laugh at musical accompaniment, but I did this time. I do like that it works with a whole slew of smart-home platforms, including Home Assistant(!) The only problem is that I'm just not in the demographic for this product, though my daughter might be for those times when she has friends over for video games. It clearly adds some zing to the normal presentation. Once again, Govee shows that you shouldn't have to spend huge amounts of cash to get excellent results. Thanks once again for the "what's wrong with it section." It's really helpful and it's also what sets your reviews ahead of the others. Thanks also for a great and entertaining review. Why compare this T3 lite vs the T1 and not the T2?, could be because the T2 is pricier (67€ vs 99€), have double leds and 2 lens in 1 camera to cover better the tv, althought it does not have the automatic turn off functionality, for me this product, remember it has Lite in it's name, seems as the entry level and the t2 and I suppose next iterations for more advance users as in Govees light strips, they have the BT only 30 leds/m, the wifi and BT 30 leds/m, the wifi 60 leds/m with protection, all this for interior, I think this is the same for the tv lights, they make two categories

Great Video as usual... Just a quick question...is this the "Govee TV 3 Lite"? That appears to be the only thing that pops up if I search on Amazon in Germany for a 3rd Generation and it confused me a bit since "Lite" seems to indicate some kind of entry level budget thingy...

  • 8 ай бұрын

It is indeed the 3 Lite. I’m assuming there will soon be a 3 “full fat” bringing the 3rd gen features of the lite and the extras the T2 has (dual lens, double the LED density etc).

  • 8 ай бұрын

@@rolandrohde I think they will add a larger TV version to the Lite soon. But if you wait a bit longer you will be able to get the 3 Pro or whatever they call it. They are clearly creating 2 tiers of this product line for entry level and high end users.

I've got a Philips TV in the kitchen with built in Ambilight which is fine, then I bought the Philips add-on lights with HDMI Syns Box for my main Samsung TV which works great except when using Samsungs Smart Hub to watch BBC iPlayer or other apps like Netflix or Amazon Prime, the lights still react to whatever is playing through the Sync Box. My next tellybox is going to be the ginormous TCL 98" and I'll try the Govee solution as using camera detection will also control the lights when using the apps. Just hope the Govee 85" kit will be enough as I can't see they make a 95" - 100" rig.

Another pretty big CON of the Camera vs HDMI sync is aspect ratio. If you watch nothing but 16:9 on your 16:9 screen it's all good. But if you watch some movies that have a much wider aspect ratio, you end up with black bars on your screen and the camera doesn't know how to handle that because it sees black on the top and bottom. HDMI sync analyzes the video signal before it's ever output to a screen so you won't have that issue.

needs to be on the bottom pointing up, being on top of the screen is in eye sight and is a black spot in the ambilight. TV manufacturers need to implement a HDMI clone output of what is on the screen, first one that comes up with that will take a share of the TV market.

I made my own about a year ago. It was a nightmare getting hold of a Raspberry Pi 4 at the time, but I genuinely wouldn't live without it now. I have more LEDs per meter. Them ones look like 30ppm, I went for 60ppm myself. I use an esp32 connected to the strip with WLED installed, and that interfaces with the Raspberry Pi with HyperHDR installed on it. I then use an HDMI capture box and a spitter to take the signal going into the TV. Yes, I know it's rather technical compared to the Govee solution, and I understand some people just wouldn't be arsed with it. For me, I just love the rewarding feeling I get from knowing I did it myself.
