Gourd Fiddle and Twig Bow
Newly completed gourd fiddle with goatskin from Jeff Menzies. Twig bow made from a small hickory branch.
The tune is Bob Tailed Mule which is usually played in A but I'm tuned down somewhere around E or F. Gourds, like people, will sometimes crack with too much tension.

Wonderful old times sound something that's lost in modern day version of this type of music where it's all not perfect on instruments that cost small fortune, just like out traditional Irish music today very same thing .I like it a wee bit rough around the edges with the bark still on it as they say here in Ireland, thanks for the tune that was a real treat indeed

Thanks so much for your kind words! The "bark still on" part of music made by plain folks for pure enjoyment is what I love!
I really love these gourd fiddles better than anything I've heard so far. Best old time sound out there.
🎉
As Always, you never cease to amaze me Mr Morris, a Gourd Fiddle and a Twig Bow, which sounds fantastic, only yesterday I modified one of my large Kettle Gourd Builds, and cut the bottom of it, leaving me with a Gourd piece about the same size as your Fiddle, but It's destined to be a Geetar of some sort.

Aw shucks, thanks Lou!
This shows that the instrument doesn't matter. It's always the player
Magic love that sound.
sounds great! wondering how the skin head and gourd are holding up under fiddle tuning tension a year later

Thank you. The gourd is still in good shape, but the goatskin sags sometimes when we have humid weather. It tightens back up again pretty quickly if I set it in the sun for 30 minutes.
very nice indeed
Sounds awesome!!!

Nice one!
Are you hitting three strings at times. The bend in the bow hair looks like it might?

If I hit 3 strings, it wasn't on purpose, lol. I think it's possible, though, with this bow and the flat bridge.
Do you have any hours fiddles for sale?

Gourd fiddles? Yes, I do. You can contact me at morbanjo@gmail.com
Oh ya…
Could anyone help me find a supply of suitable gords they are not available here in Ireland.??
That bow is cool. I guess you would have to find a stick with enough spring in it to give it the tension.
Ooh, that’s a nice looking head! On a nice looking/sounding fiddle (giddle? gourdle?). I’ve not tried any of Jeff’s heads yet, but have thought about it. That and one of John Balch’s have been considered. I think I left a comment on another video of yours, but I saw this in my feed the other day and thought it was pretty cool and wanted to share: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gIyF2aaYlautico.html
