I was a stuntman on several films with Doc Z. He’s a real mensch. We use to go to Karen Valentine’s house and play Jarts in the backyard. But, I digress. Anyway, he’s aces in my book. Give you the tunic off his back.

I ran the crafty on a movie he was in. Nicest Orangutan ever. He never threw his feces even once, and had great stories about the time Ethyl Merman got stuck in a toilet and he got her out using a combination of Miracle Whip and I Can't Believe It's Not Butter.

I heard the breakup was due to Dr. Z embarrassing Karen on the set of Room 222. The story is that Dr. Z was on the 20th Century Fox lot having just auditioned for the lead role in Love Story and dropped in to visit Karen on the set of Room 222. When he arrived on set he saw David “Bernie” Jolliffe chatting up Karen on an isolated part of the set and Dr. Z just lost it! Dr. Z is a sweet guy but his jealous nature is known throughout Hollywood.

I once read that Dr. Z was up for the part of Principle Buchanan but was replaced because TV wasn't ready for a human/simian flirtatious relationship. Really sad, but I'm glad we've come so far since then.

It's such an intelligent level of satire. The Hollywood retrospective interview. Esoteric yet familiar. Tales from the set. Trashing other actors. Referencing places they live. Profundity contrasted with the absurdity of it all being told by an ape.

The makeup was so time consuming she said she would sleep in it sometimes instead of removal and reapplication. We had dinner. I ate a nice dinner while she sipped her drink through a straw. She was very nice to chat with.

This interview inspires awe in me, a fan of the original Planet Of The Apes since Dad took me to see it at the theater at age 8 in 1968. My first theater movie. I didn't understand much of what I was seeing, but I was blown away, and still am. So seeing Dr. Zaius himself, telling his history of this film and Hollywood back in the day, brings me great joy. This interview makes about as much sense as the film did to me at age 8, but no matter. Many things are made clear to me here as well.

And I thought I was the only one who remembered that sweet, devoted little old lady who always seemed to be in the studio audiences of all the tv show tapings of the 1970's (Merv Griffin, Carol Burnett, Match Game, Dinah Shore, etc.) God bless you, Mrs. Miller, wherever you are!

The Merv Griffin show, Dinah Shore, Mike Douglas, and the best of all, the king of late night Johnny Carson!
