Gottlieb Sys80B - Diagnosing weird pinball behavior - Part 2/2 - PinballHelp.com

This is a short 2-part video of a Gottlieb Raven System 80B pinball machine, where you can follow along with me where I go down a bit of a rabbit hole trying to find out why this game suddenly decided not to start, the sound turned off, and no coils would fire. One minute it was working, the next it wasn't. I started to assume it was a switch issue. Check out the path, which as it turns out, often leads to a predictable end... This video shows how I trance the switch matrix issues in a System 80.

Yes Pinballhelp, more Q&A youtube videos would help. The old mechanical pinball schematics don't tell you which coils are suppose to be energized turned on. The schematics just shows a bunch of coils and relays contact switches. So its hard to know which coils are suppose to be turned ON unless you know how the pinball matrix system works it seems.

I may have mentioned this in various videos on EM games, but when it comes to schematics for EM pinball machines, the "state" of the game as picture in the schematics is traditionally the beginning of ball one, with the ball in the shooter lane.

I have a Harlem globetrotter, I had 1 light out on the GLOBE saucer (O). Tried new bulb, tried new light socket- still didnt work. Then I jumped power from a different working light-- worked. So i decided to trace that light on the schematic- j3 27 on the circuit board-- wire broke. Sometimes we make easy repairs hard!!!! Live and learn I guess!!!

PINBALLHELP, 1.)older pinball games used AC solenoids, AC relays, AC Coils but they switched over to DC solenoids, DC relays, DC coils, any reasons why? Some pinball techs say that DC solenoids DC relays are Faster than AC solenoids AC relays this is why they switched over. 2.) Can you make a youtube video going over various pinball MPU motherboards whichs microprocessors, RAM chips, EEPROM chips and the dipswitch settings for gottlieb, ballys, williams in the 70's and early 80's. 3.) Why does Pinball games driver board use PIA chips when they can connect the mosfets switches directly to the MPU board instead of using a PIA chip? The PIA chips do what in pinball games? 4.) What would you recommend to save money on your electrical bill when having many pinball games turned on all day, what kind of power supply would save money on your electrical bill?

Some good questions... I'll have to look into this and see what I can do. I think it would be a great idea to do some Q&A from people.
