Gothic themes, byronism, and queerness in Alexandre Dumas's The Count of Monte Cristo

Let's talk about Edmond Dantès!
I tried to keep this video free of spoilers, but I'm terrible at it. You've been warned.
Note: In the 19th century, the term 'orientalism' referred to ancient asian cultures. Since there are different asian cultures, I should have specified that in The Count of Monte Cristo, Edmond adopts Greek and Arabian customs.

I'm subscribed to several other literature channels and most of them give very high praise to The Count of Monte Cristo, too. It is indeed one of the most compelling stories that I've ever read. Oh, and almost forgot, your discussion here is wonderful, thank you!

How does your channel not have 10 times the number of views and subscribers you currently have? Your enthusiasm for the material is wonderful and infectious. We need to find a Great Hall in a castle or a lavish Victorian drawing room for your setting! Speaking of Monte Cristo... I travelled to France many years ago, and to Marseilles in particular, to visit the Chateau d'If - solely because of Dumas' novel. Its stark white stones rose up out of spectacularly beautiful, blue-green waters. I asked the tour guide about Edmond, but they said he had not been a resident for some time. Too bad. I was hoping to get his autograph.

Thank you!!! I guess I’m not very consistent posting my videos, but it’s fine. I don’t do this for the views but because I love exchanging ideas.☺️ How wonderful your were able to go! My new dream destination is Marseille. I was not interested in visiting France until I read this novel 🤣. It’s very cool to find people who like this work as much as I do.

@@evasliteraryparlour I'm about to have some time off from work, during which I'd like to do a deep dive into Dumas' history & biography, as well as revisit some of his works. He was as fascinating as his novels! If you'd like, I'd be happy to share some photos from Chateau d'If. But watch out for that crazy bedbug invasion if you plan on visiting France in the next few months! Cheers -

THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT, I just started following the channel and I was surprised to find it didn't have at least 10k subscribers..

Thanks for dedicating another video about gothic literature. i am just recently reading 19th century English Literature in uni, and also aiming to get the most out of the gothic fiction in broad aspects. this was a great inspiration for me to insert this work to my reading list.
