    Thank you, thank you, thank you! Just got my new load of Goteks in from my supplier and they wouldn't flash! Windows couldn't recognize them, so I went looking, figuring it was just a driver update. Lo and behold I found you! Got this just in time to flash a Gotek to send to the customer! Thanks for the invaluable information and you have earned a Subscribe from me! Awesome work.

    Thanks for keeping these videos up to date. I bought two of these things off Amazon in the last week or two and got the old style but I'm guessing those are going to run out fast. I've been tinkering with putting these things in a single drive Bay along with the SD card readers. It's been pretty fun. I learned a lot from your videos.

    This was a fantastic video! thank you so much! Really helped me figure out how to install upgrades on a gotek. I recently bought a new gotek that had a "AT32F416" chip which when I opened the flash software shows up as a "AT32F415" I believe its the same chip, just with a much smaller footprint.

    You do really good work. You absolutely do make it look easy and I doubt I would do as good a job myself (turns out many retro fans are also "retro people" with many of the failings as the old stuff we still enjoy! So our eyes aren't as sharp as they once were or our hands as steady!) I have a question: There is a copy and paste operation in the FlashFloppy firmware. I don't yet know how to properly make use of it. My thought is that I would include a "blank" disk image and use the copy and paste (as new) to add new disks. What else would a copy-paste rotary menu option be for? Could you put together a video demonstrating this?

  • @retrofriends

    @retrofriends

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes I think there is less RAM, but it's not like original floppy drives had any RAM. So the RAM is for the firmware to run, and it does. Plus any bug fixes would be just a FF version update away. Some [logical] speculation here, admittedly.

    You just need disk image files for your particular host device. In the Amiga computer world, these are .adf files. I copy some .adfs to a USB drive, and then simply plug that in to the Gotek. No special software is required. Check the FlashFloppy Wiki for host devices and verify you have set the gotek up correctly. Also try googling your device + flashfloppy.

    Re rotary encoder, the one you use does not have a board with pull-up resistors like the standard KY-040 rotary does. Did you desolder the encoder from the board, or else are you using an encoder that came bare, without the board? If bare, what was the model number/type/description keywords to find such a Gotek compatible bare one online? Thanks!

    That is a good question, after all a USB thumb drive is seen by any host device as a generic drive. You would definitely have to make sure to externally power the hard drive. But at that point you have to consider the convenience of a thumb drive. You could store the entire Amiga software collection on one stick.

So I would think that if the manufacturer is confident enough to abandon their firmware in lieu of Flash Floppy, that shouldn't give anyone any problems. Was it working before you flashed it? Certainly, but are you talking about a modern 64-bit PC, 32-bit, 16-bit 286 or 8086, or original 8-bit PC or 8088 "clones"? You certainly can use any of these with a floppy controller (mabye difficult to find in new 64-bit PCs), a question is Windows or DOS (including Windows up to 3.11). I believe OS setup for win95 and Linux (386s and up) is automatic after firmware settings are applied and the Gotek has been flashed. Probably a big issue for older PCs is whether you use a floppy disk controller card and put the floppy cable out the back, or for later PCs, is the cable connection directly off the motherboard, and maybe you need to mod the plastic PC case. Original PC, PC XT and PC AT, and such, you are going to use the controller card, and you want a long cable. The irony here is that Gotek built these originally for PCs (keyboard synths and, certain sewing machines, too but mostly industrial PC clones) Installation should be slightly simpler than for Amiga and Atari users, and more of the original Gotek documentation will be relevant. I'm using mine in an 8088 Compaq Portable. Yes there are important settings to remember, jumper settings and possibly also firmware settings. Nothing else is needed. Straight from relevant Github page: IBM PC compatibles have a non-Shugart interface which must be explicitly configured in FlashFloppy: IBM-PC interface mode must be configured: jumper JC at the rear of the Gotek board; or Specify via FF.CFG: interface = ibmpc. jumper select-line S1 at the rear of the Gotek board. (Special case for IBM PS/2s) A number of interfaces are used in the various models of PS/2. You may require a 40-pin edge to 34-pin IDC adapter... Also note: You may need to ground pin 4 (place a jumper at J5) for the Gotek to be detected

    Sure there is a performance difference/issue : The AT32 used in these "new gotek" have only half of the STM32 RAM space (32KB vs 64KB). There is less memory for the USB cache. This make the format and the Amiga write operations less reliable : A full track can't be fully stored in ram anymore and the firmware need to flush to the stick in "real time"... If the usb stick ask for a pause during the write operation, the track could be corrupted.... Gotek System don't care about this because the original firmware only support fixed formats and doesn't really support format operations...

    @@JeffHxC2001I appreciate the theory of operation. It gives us something to look out for. However, as stated in the video, Gotek is committed to Artery. Soon I expect we will have no choice, if not already. Fortunately, in all my testing with FlashFloppy firmware I have not seen any issues with reading or writing to USB with these new Artery boards (dozens so far). Others have had good success according to the Facebook group (potentially hundreds already). Not sure about HxC firmware issues, as I use FlashFloppy.

    @@retrofriends This is just a matter of chance : If you check the usb sticks specifications, the write time is not guaranteed at all. The write time can occasionally be too long and then data can lost. This not a question of firmware, but of physical memory buffer available in this new mcu. @@retrofriends Also thanks for the tutorial, I was able to flash the gotek under 20 min with an old usb cable I had. It works flawlessly on an old yamaha organ.
