man he's so adorable, I'm so sad he died. He clearly wanted nothing to do with the politics of westeros. He just loved his family and counted his allies as friends (aka Tywin), loved his food, wine and watching the Reach prosper. So what if he wasn't crazy sharp, his lords loved him as did his people and basically kept half of Westeros from starving. what a loveable guy

Mace Tyrell is actually one of the luckiest lords on the show. Unlike Ned, he got away with barely having to play the game. He was so oafish and harmless that people just let him be, leaving him to sing and enjoy the beauty of life in the Reach. Even his death was quick and painless. Ignorance (or flawlessly feigned ignorance) truly is bliss.

@plaguelock not necessarily, you don't have to like a character just because they grow or do not. Varys has remained a favourite despite not changing, same with Tywin. She's one of my favourites in the show because of how intelligent she is, certainly how she could control joffrey to some extent despite Cersei not being able to. She's intelligent, beautiful (yes, I admire her for her beauty) and she was one of the best players of the game. I would have loved to see how she would shape kings landing when with Tommen and not without the Sparrows.

Sigh, such a stupid nonsense and it is upvoted that much lol. If Stannis would do nothing. There would be no Tyrells allied with Lannisters. Nothing from this would happened. Whole story would be different from season 2 onwards and either Joffrey would be till king or he would be overthrown by Renly. If he did not killed Renly, Tyrrels would remained his allies and most likely they would crush the Lannisters alongside Starks If he did not fought at Blackwater Bay, there would be no need for Tywin to ally with them and so on and so on. Even if after Blackwater Bay he would not do anything, it is pretty clear that proper line of succession did not mattered anymore.

    A. New Paradigm I disagree. Some people give Tywin a pass and look how he treats his children. It never implies any of the Tyrells dislike Olenna and her barbs. She's also accepting of her grandson's sexuality despite the fact she should hate him for it. After all if he's gay who's going to carry on the Tyrell name. She busts their balls but that's because she's smart and powerful. It's not cruel or malicious just refreshingly honest. She killed Joffrey to spare Margery. She loves them dearly it's obvious.

viktor varga sadly Game of Thrones isn't Game of Thrones since season 5. Season 4 was the last good season, now they make one horrible written season after another. Thats why I wasn't really excited for season 7 as I know that it will be worse. You can see this phenomenon in nearly every show. They start good but later fuck up. GoT is a prime example. If Mace Tyrell really wasn't a dumb highborn but a smart tactician who just tricked the whole pack of Westeros, THAT would be amazing and exciting. But the writers killed Magaery, who had a plan (she just played the role to the High Sparrow) just because they didn't know what to do with her later. D&D really fucked up the Tyrells, Dorne, Stannis, and the "the north remembers"-thing.

*0:00* I've always loved the realism of that opening scene. He's Mace Tyrell. He isn't known as being very intelligent. Or a great battlefield commander. Or a warrior. (And in fact the only discussion within the show of his military "prowess" is how the vanguard of his army [led by Lord Tarly, not by Mace] once defeated King Robert, and how Mace mostly spent his time feasting during the siege of Storm's End.) But even so, he's not a complete buffoon. It makes sense why people follow him. He has a loud "battlefield voice" and his point is actually really motivating for the soldiers.

One thing that would have given Mace a true sense of “Oh, this dude *is* the Warden of the Reach” is if during the scene he leads the Tyrell troops into King’s Landing instead of some random guy calling out orders to his troops it was Mace himself finally showing up and letting loose with big booming commands and drawing his sword, ready to throw down himself to protect his daughter. Instead, he was a fool in armor and feathers
