    I used to have Gretsch soprano with friction pegs. They were really good! So was the actul uke. It was a soprano with extra frets after 12. Cool instrument, the same color as this one in the review, vintage style. Love Gretsch. Great review! Love your channel!

    What a great little concert uke from one of the old time brands! Not perfect, but you cannot beat the price and getting a good setup on it would make it even better! Thanks for buying this so that you could review it for us! You went above and beyond!

    Thanks for the awesome review. I’m a brand newbie and wouldn’t know a decent uke from a pineapple, but this review sent me to my local music store and after trying a bunch I purchased the tenor version of this uke. Hopefully, the fine qualities extolled concerning this concert uke translate to my new tenor as well. And BOY is it loud. Now the neighbors can hear how much I suck as easy as my family can👍🏻

    I’ve got a Gretsch g9120 tenor, and although brighter sounding that my concert Kala KA-CEM, it’s also 8 years newer and less played. The resonance is really nice, and the sound is getting richer with more playing time. I hope that these Gretschs will one day sound like the old Gretsch ukeleles of the past that, in their time, sold for only around $6, the same price as their Martins counterparts 😀 Wishful thinking? Nah, I’m happy with mine and love playing it, and that’s what counts. Thanks for reviewing this!

    I got Gretsch 9120 which is the tenor version and I think it's a bit better than 9110. The bridge has a different shape and looks better, the tuner are Grover 9NB brand good quality, I played both 9110 and 9120 at the shop and preferred the sound of 9120. However, in my opinion, they are very good quality and attractive Uke. Great value for money.

    Yes, there is a tenor version, just as nice as this one. I tried it out at a local store and I was told (incorrectly, as it turns out) that it was solid mahogany. So it left me a bit underwhelmed, because it did not sound better than my $200 solid mahogany Ortega concert, as I expected it to. But the one you've reviewed seems to be a better concert than the one I tried was a tenor. (And Barry, if you get to feature a solid wood Ortega, please do. I know they are usually stocked among the low-priced ukes, but ever since I got my RU11 (solid mahogany concert) in July, I've had a hard time finding a sweeter sounding uke at twice the price. Maybe I just got extremely lucky with that specific unit, I don't know. They put Aquila white nylons on them, too, which probably helps, I love these strings!)

    Barry, I'd like to thank you for mentioning the importance of buying from a dealer/music store instead of online in your videos. I wanted to buy ukulelea from Amazon originally. But after reading your blog and watching multiple videos of yours. I went to the local music store (which includes a repair shop) to try out ukulele. The sides of the ukuleles under 200USD were all very sharp (I guess due to low humidity here -->wood shrinks, and not yet looked at by technician). Some have buzz when playing. The sales person sent the three ukulele I tried to the technician right away. At the store I got to plug the ukulele into amplifier and heard the buzz noise clearly. The one I like (which I was about to purchase online earlier)has a slight rattle when playing even after the technician looking at it twice. The sales pulled a new one from the stock and no buzz at all. The technician smoothed out the fret edges on the neck, and put a strap botton with no extra cost. I cannot imagine if I had bought one online without set up/tune up/refinement. Thank you so much for doing what you are doing to the online community.

    I have a Gretsch Long Neck soprano, and see many new players in our meet-ups using them too. My cheap and lucky (I say lucky because 3 others I bought sound horrible) Ammoon soprano still sounds the best, mostly because of the resonance of the thin laminate you mentioned. Thanks for the review and I too would recommend a Gretsch to a beginner with small hands.

    Photorooster has your soprano’s bridge start to lift in the long neck? I had one and it’s bridge started coming up. It was then I realized that perhaps the bridge can’t handle the tension from being a long neck. I’ve also checked around if it was common, and it seems like a bridge repair is common with it.

I think they would have a real winner on there hands if they widened the nut and gave the option of friction pegs. I can't check as no longer have this one with me - was just a review model. If there is a curve on yours - it's likely deliberate - many ukes have them - it helps with sound projection

    I bought a tenor of this one. Which strings would you recommend changing to?

  • @GotAUkulele

    @GotAUkulele

    5 ай бұрын

    Sorry - have a policy of never recommending strings - not to be unhelpful, it's just a totally subjective thing. I've seen people argue about the same string set - one saying they are bright, one saying warm - yet they are both right (we all hear and play differently). My advice is just to buy a few sets and trust your own ears as to what you like

    I never give individual recommendations i'm afraid - but I find the Baton Rouge laminates to be about as loud as most concerts and tenors you will find. The trick is in the thin laminate they use.

  • @GotAUkulele

    @GotAUkulele

    5 жыл бұрын

    Leon Morgans I don’t tend to feature ‘signature’ ukes as I tend to prefer to focus on the brand core models as they are more reflective of the rest of their range. Unlikely you’ll see one I’m afraid but you may we’ll see other examples from the same brands. The fact a uke has someone supposedly famous (subjective in itself ) is not a mark of quality.

  • @GotAUkulele

    @GotAUkulele

    5 жыл бұрын

    Leon Morgans plus - I couldn’t work out who the uke teacher brand was. Fair play to Elise as she is playing a Flight brand uke - I’ve reviewed several of those and they are all great ukes. That sums up my view of that brand. The uke teacher one appears to be made by a cosmetics company as far as I can see?

    This example was fine, but action is not a 'feature' of a specific model - it's something that differs from ukulele to ukulele no matter the brand. If an instrument is not checked or setup first, ANYukulele can have poor action (and equally, any poor action can usually be corrected)
