Got A Loose Canvas? No Problem! How To Tighten A Saggy Art Canvas
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Have you ever wondered what to do with an art canvas that has gone all loose and saggy? It can be frustrating, especially if it’s an expensive, gallery-wrapped canvas. You definitely DON’T want to pour on a canvas that has lots of slack in it, or you’ll ruin your design.
Today I’ll show you a super simple trick to tighten up your canvases before you paint on them - it even works on finished, varnished paintings too!
All you need is one ingredient: water! A spray bottle and paintbrush are additional helpful tools but not absolutely necessary.

It works😘😘😘
This works. I hope it stays. The corner was actually pressed into a dimple, shipping damage I assume. I was afraid I'd have to return it. But I tried your method and set it out in the hot sun for 2 hours and voila. I'm so grateful. 7-14-2023

Yay! I’m so glad that it helped you save your canvas!
Such an awesome tip..especially for the finished painting! I didn't know you could tighten it up after it was painted on. Quick question..do you know what are you supposed to do with the little wooden pieces that come with some canvases? For the cutouts in the wood on the back?
@AnnaBlountArt

Haha I have no idea! Maybe they can be tucked inside the corners to help with wrinkled corners? Though with the water and paintbrush, it shouldn’t be necessary.

They're called canvas keys. Starting with the lower slot in one corner slide in one key with the flat side towards the wooden frame, slide the next one into the slot above the previous one. Continue around your frame until you've used all 8 keys. Now tap on them GENTLY to tighten the canvas.

The varnish on this piece is amazing. What did you use?
@AnnaBlountArt
Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I used liquitex basics gloss varnish. It looks so thick and smooth because it was a bloom swipe with a really thick layer of paint anyway 😊
But what if that saggy issue happens not on a streched canvas but on a canvas panel BOARD?
@AnnaBlountArt
Жыл бұрын
Well a canvas board would warp more than sag. I’m afraid I don’t have a lot of experience with canvas panels but your paint surface should be flexible enough to un-warp it manually.
I've used this method often to tighten a loose canvas, and it really works!!! So I bought a cheap canvas, used water to tighten. It worked so well, now my canvas is warped!! Is there any way to fix an over tightened canvas that warped the frame?

Oh interesting. Hm. Possibly re-wet it and flatten it between two heavy things while it dries?
@dleigh4534

@@AnnaBlountArt I actually did try that, it only helped just a little. But if you had seen how incredibly warped the canvas got, I mean I never seen such warping!! I guess I will soak it then weight it down good and let it dry in the sun 🌞 if that don't work I will figure something else out, cut the canvas off and go in a different direction. Thanks for help though 😊

Hello from Canada How did you get your varnish to look like resin. So smooth
@AnnaBlountArt
2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Well it started with a bloom swipe, so it was a really thick coat of paint that covered the canvas texture. Then I added 2 pretty heavy coats of liquitex basics gloss varnish, possibly 3? 2 is my standard. Yeah I love how smooth it is 😁

My friend dropped something on my painting and it now has a dent. My problem is I put a back on my canvas. Is there a way to remove the dent without taking the back off?
@AnnaBlountArt

Oh dear! I think you’ll have to at least partially remove the backing so that you can spray some water on the canvas back…
Hi Anna, your finished canvas looks very glossy. What kind of varnish did you use on your painted canvas?
@AnnaBlountArt
6 ай бұрын
Thanks! I used Liquitex Basics gloss varnish, 2-3 heavy coats. But it looks especially smooth because it’s a bloom pour, which hides the canvas texture.

Thank you so much! I’m a newbie, and I’ve used W&N spray gloss. However, I haven’t gotten quite the gloss results I wanted even after multiple applications. Since I did a swipe on a 48x60 (my biggest - by far), I didn’t think Liquid Glass or resin was an affordable/acceptable option. So, I’m looking forward to trying Liquitex Basics Gloss Varnish. Thank you again!!!

If you use a hair dryer you can achieve a greater ‘shrinkage’ rate.

Good video but almost 9 min to just show and saw to wet the back. You’re videos would be more engaging if you were shorter and more precise

Well I did show that it worked on a raw canvas as well as a painted/varnished canvas, and I demonstrated two methods of wetting the back… a lot of my viewers like having full instruction versus rushing through the process, but if you don’t prefer that, no problem!
