You are so enthusiastic and so generous with your tips and lessons. I remember seeing Bryn's faces then and loved them.... still do. Thanks for the lesson Bryn. I started to use the grid method and did it on the tracing paper. Then just used carbon paper to transfer onto my watercolour paper. Do you only do another grid on the plain paper if you are doing a smaller scale or have I totally misunderstood the process? X

  • @brynnguyenswhymsicaljourne231

I trace the image onto tracing paper so that I get rid of the shapes and shadows that can be distracting and am looking at pure lines. I draw a grid on my tracing paper. Then I draw another grid on copy paper and use the image with grid on the tracing paper to guide me where to place the image on my copy paper. The purpose of the grid is to help me draw it out as accurate as possible. Once I draw out my image, then I scale it down on my printer to the size I need. Let me know if that helps and if you have any further questions. ☺️

Instead of taking on picture and reducing the picture on the computer and printing it out, you can just draw another grid using the ratio between the original size and the desired size. Simple math. If you want a picture twice as big, double the gird size; twice as small, half the grid size … the same applies to any number it is a simple ratio. No computer needed. Old school but highly effective. Pretty sure the old master used this method;no computers available then. This method is particularly useful to enlarge images since most printers only print out 8.5 x 11.

Hi Patty, Yes-you could do it that way as well. Some people have a difficult time doing the math conversion so I like to keep it 1:1 ratio for them. Also, the cool thing about doing the tracing paper and 1:1 ratio is that if you get stuck on something not looking right, you can just lay the tracing paper reference over the top and see where the correction needs to be. So in this way the tracing paper becomes a tool to help guide where the lines should go. I have a lesson on the grid at Awesome Art School in the Realistic Faces classroom in the Fun Fab Drawing Club that explains my rationale for why I do it this way for beginners. Thank you for your suggestions! 😊

@@brynnguyenswhymsicaljourne231 I get it that math is intimidating to some people. But it you shy away from it you never learn that is just like every other skill, you need to practice it. I am a little sensitive when it comes to math phobias. It perpetuates the myth that math is hard. I studied engineering in the 1980’s and I am tired or hearing that women are not good at math or people need to avoid math because it is hard. So untrue and a disservice to our intelligence. This is not meant as a criticism of you. While you find your method easy; others like myself find the ratios easier. Just a quick mention of another approach is all I am suggesting.
